“Good resort, very busy but you'll still have a good time.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

I am 26 years old and I went with my girlfriend's family and relatives. They have been going there for the past 9 years. My second time there. I know people at other resorts who got VIP bracelets there second time. They finally got upgraded bracelets, their 9th time!!! That's ridiculous. Why did it take so long? The place is really nice, they have just done renovations and they look great! In my opinion, money would have been better spent on the rooms. Our fridge was not working. We had to get someone to come fix it. Our A/C was not working, another guy came to fix that and then it worked a little better but nowhere near my liking. That was not good. Couldn't sleep properly. Rooms are nice though besides that.
They had a lot of activities, I played beach volleyball, pool volleyball basketball, golf, tennis, ping pong, soccer, snorkelling, water polo, kayaking, and more. One thing I did not like was when I played soccer the staff were tools. Firstly, they try their hardest and do not adapt to the people playing. I play soccer at a high level and I just wanted to have fun. I go up tot he staff saying I want to play. Then they say I need a team of 4 because the mexican staff were facing another team of 4. Well why didn't I just take one of the Mexicans place? They play everyday! I finally got a team of 4 so then I wait until the current team playing plays first to 2 goals. Mexicans obviously win very quickly. Second question. Why couldn't our team face the other vacationers?? No, we had to face the mexicans when I have little kids on my team just having fun. So we lost in record time so i just left. Someone needs to fix that. No wonder why not many people play. The mexican staff are more concerned about winning (at any cost) then ensure the vacationers are having fun. Unbelievable!! Sorry about that rant, but they are like that in a few of the sports.
Anyway, At some points we had to wait 20 minutes for drinks, and the line to get drinks were massive. Way understaffed during peak hours.
Food had a great selection and the a la cartes were delicious. One thing I did not like was we had reservations for 8pm. We did not get in until 850. I was starving. They said people came late and they had to take them in. Well, when I was at Sunset in Montego bay they had a 15 minute cut off and honoured it. This is how it should be.
Staff never said hi walking by but there were some staff that were great like sara and pam.
I was dying to snorkel so myself and others go to get equipment, we missed it by 2 minutes and wouldn't let us go. We go the second day and they ran out of equipment. Okay.... finally the third day we got to go. It was really fun. Saw turtles, cool fish, and a stingray. Way too cool.
A lot of women had thong bikinis out there! The only benefit of having Europeans at the resort in my humble opinion.
The disco was great. just like a nightclub, lots of people!! But not too much. Diverse selection of women.
Overall is was really good despite all of my complaining. It is all what you make it!! renovations Lobby and area are really nice, I just wouldnt pay over 1500. When I go back I know what to do and what not to do. Beach is HUGE. Rocky in many areas but the beach is big so you can find places that are clear. If you are hesitant, just go. Its worth it

Room Tip: If you want a beach chair by the pool, you must get out there at 7am and put a towel on it. Do not b...

We upgraded to Club Premium when we arrived at the resort. We used one of the resort credits in the amount of $400. for a room upgrade. We still had to give them an additional $720. However, in return we had a Jacuzzi on our balcony facing the pool and steps from the ocean. It also allowed us to have more choices for dinner reservations and access to the club premium concierge and snacks and drinks. The room had also been redone and was roomy. There were two sofas in the room and a small table and two chairs on the balcony. We were able to peak into the regular rooms and they did appear a bit smaller with a sofa, and small table with two chairs. The bathroom had a door to the toilet, a shower with a door and two double sinks. I also appreciated the magnifying makeup mirror. The pools are very nice. The beach is beautiful with lots of chairs and shade from palm trees. We love a large resort because it gives you ample room to roam. You can venture to each resort in the complex and have a look around. Each resort has a few shops. There is a large shopping center on the property with a lot of shops. The restaurants that needed reservations, were strict on their dress code requiring men to wear slacks. There was not pool service for drinks. You had to walk up to the bar in the pool area or go to the swim up bar for a drink. This is where they are way understaffed. The line was often ten to twelve people deep. It was just as bad at the swim up bar. The bartenders worked as fast as possible. There was a good variety at the buffets restaurants. Again, they were understaffed in the mornings. It was extremely hard to get a cup of coffee and next to impossible to get a second. We did enjoy our trip very much. This was our seventh time to the Cancun-Riviera Maya area and we plan on bringing the whole family to the Barceló next year.

We are now staying at this hotel for our 2nd week in Mexico - the grounds are beautiful and the beach the best we have experience in this part of Mexico BUT turning down our bed for the first night we found dirty/stained sheets on our bed - DISGUSTING!!!!! Also brought my own face cloths which the cleaning staff claimed, not impressed.......

We will have good things to say about the Beach not so much the Hotel/service

We're a couple in our mid-50's, who have done either an all-inclusive resort or cruise every year for the past 15 years. This was our first AI in Mexico. We've been to some great, and some not-so-great resorts, and it might be that we're a little jaded now - but this is definitely a resort we will return to - and we've never said that before.

The drawbacks: it's a huge resort - so regardless of where your room is, you'll have a bit of a walk to either the restaurants, or to the beach/pool area. That might be difficult for some. Like most resorts, the evening entertainment is mediocre, and that's being kind. I don't understand why a resort can't cater to the adult crowd - a piano bar, dancing to our own music, at a reasonable time - not just starting at 11:00 pm. If I ever find a resort that offers that - it will be our new favourite!

The lunches at the beach restaurant were repetitive and boring. But we always had the option of going to a different beach restaurant or walking to the buffet. We just didn't bother.

We were in TULUM - which is the furthest from the lobby - but handy to the beach. We had a "superior" (ie standard) room, with 2 beds, 2 chairs. It was spacious and didn't feel crowded. Flat screen TV mounted on the wall. Balcony with two chairs and a table, and drying rods. The bathroom was gorgeous - big soaking tub, rain shower with good pressure and lots of hot water. The room was cleaned every day, and cleaned well. Stocked fridge. Didn't appreciate the plastic-backed mattress cover - I know they need it but it made for a noisy and sticky sleep - so we removed them for sleeping.

The beach and pool area have LOTS of chairs, and lots of choice as to sun or shade. You don't have to get up in the dark to get a good spot - we made our way to the beach every day around 9 am, and still had lots of choice. There's even an "overflow" area which is a bit further from the bar, but it was always empty.

You can walk out quite far in the water, however, if you plan to do that - bring water shoes as it gets a bit rocky further out. That makes it awesome for snorkeling though, so look on the bright side!

There's a cute little water park for the kiddies - we didn't have kids with us, but it looked like everyone was enjoying it.

The food at the buffet was delicious every night - in fact we never used our options to attend the a la carte restaurants, because we liked the buffet so much. The grounds have been redone and are growing in nicely - the iguanas are awesome!

Service was very good - their English was far better than my Spanish, that's for sure.

As I said, we'll definitely return to this resort. A great time, and sad to leave.

We stayed at Barcello Beach Resort for 2 weeks over Christmas and the New Year period (2013/4). There are four hotels on the same site. These are The Palace, The Colonial, The Caribe and The Beach, with the level of luxury descending in that order. We chose The Beach because when we read the on-line reviews, The Beach had the least number of complaints!! However because of renovations of The Beach facilities, our room was in The Caribe. We had requested a room on the second floor (this was mainly because we heard from several previous guests that the toilets on the first floor were prone to blocking and overflow), we were initially given a room on the first floor and it was a smoking room. So within minutes of entering the room, the strong smell of bleach from the bathroom (where the paint was peeling from the walls) and the smell of stale smoke in the bedroom made us cough. We called the reception and we were moved to a room in a no-smoking block on the second floor. This room was fine, apart from the drain blocking on the first morning so that water from the bath was emptying into the bedroom and eventually flowing under the door to the landing outside. This was reported and quickly dealt with, and the problem did not reoccur. The Transat rep told us that Barcello usually does not take notice of special requirements which guests make with their booking, so guests are frequently allocated rooms which do not meet their requirements. This leads to headaches for the travel reps and the guests alike. One guest (a severe asthmatic) we spoke to said that he had telephoned Barcello a few days before he traveled to make sure that he got a no-smoking room. So if you plan to go to this resort and have specific room requirements, then don’t rely on information sent by your travel agent!!

Generally the people on the reception desk were not too helpful. They gave the impression that they were ‘shell-shocked’ by complaints. But the other staff (e.g. in restaurants) were pleasant and dignified. The specialty restaurants were excellent and enjoyable. The buffets got boring and several times there was little food left to eat at the times we went (usually but not always, towards the closing time).

The grounds have a ‘Mayan’ theme and were really excellent. The pools were attractive and although this was a peak holiday period, sun beds were usually available. And on the beach there were always dozens of spare sun beds. The beach itself was pleasant. No beach umbrellas. The only shade was from palm trees, but this was adequate. The cordoned-off swimming area of the sea was a gently sloping rock shelf. Some areas had sand, but other areas had sharp rocks. So swimming shoes would be well advised!! In the sea there were lots of fish, turtles and rays. Some days the sea was a bit rough and some days almost flat calm depending on the weather. There was a red-flag some days but still safe to swim. There was a beach guard on duty all the time, although not always in the observation tower. There were notices at the entry points to the beach stating that the beach was a municipal area and thefts, etc. which took place on the beach were not the responsibility of Barcello.

There was a feeling of good security. Several times we took a taxi to Playa del Carmen. On leaving the complex the security staff noted our room number and checked this when we returned. None of our items were stolen.

Some of the walkways between the hotel buildings were tiled and when wet, extremely slippery.

There was a show every night in the Theatre. This ranged from very good (Mexican regional show and circus) to poor (karaoke).

Money-off vouchers with a value of $3000 were given that the check-in. For example, $20 off an $80 bottle of wine (the wine list in all restaurants was the same). Or $100 off a couples 80 minute massage (normal price $350). So the vouchers just gave a reduction on things which were already massively overpriced. To ‘save’ the $3000, it would have been necessary to spend over $10,000. Also it turned-out that ‘all-inclusive’ turned out to be not so all-inclusive. For example some alcoholic drinks were only available to members of the Premium Club (which cost about $80 to join).

Of course the Barcello organization is there to make money. And in a resort with many thousands of people, there have to be rules and regulations. Bearing this in mind, was it a memorable vacation that would make us want to return? No. Being told that we were not entitled e.g. to some alcoholic drinks, or not allowed to take lunch in a particular beach restaurant was irritating (although when I checked this was wrong information and the responsible member of staff was not aware what our wrist bands entitled us to). Would it have been better if we stayed at one of the more luxurious hotels? Maybe, but on excursions, we also heard similar complaints to ours (drains) from people staying in the Palace and Colonial.

Room Tip: If you want no smoking, request a room in a no smoking block. Better to phone several days before tr...

We recently spent a week at the Barcelo Maya Beach. We stayed Feb 2-9. We travelled as a couple with 4 kids ( three 16 year olds and a 14 year old). We have never been to a Barcelo resort before but we will definitely be back. All the kids had a great time with plenty of things for them to do. They all enjoyed the daily activities provided by the entertainment staff as well as the mini golf, water sports and tennis. The food was great with plenty of choices for everyone. The resort was immaculately clean and very well maintained. My husband and I upgraded to the club premium so we could enjoy a few more ala cartes, as well as have a newly renovated room (which was beautiful and had a great location). The size of the resort was perfect with great paths to run or walk on.....not ridiculously huge like we had read in some other reviews. We stayed in the Coba building in the ground floor and as I said before the rooms were great even the kids room which was not upgraded. Housekeeping was wonderful and the minibars were always restocked. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. We took in all the evening shows and we enjoyed them all. They are an hour in length which is perfect in our opinion. Pools were beautiful and the beach is amazing!!! This was a memorable family vacation for all of us.

We were there the last week in January and really enjoyed our stay. The rooms are kept very clean and everything was well stocked, the grounds are very nice. Food was ok, we would of liked more Mexican food choices at the buffet. If you go to the La carte try the Mayan coffee the best! There are lots of chairs on the beach and around the pools no problems getting a good spot, loved the hammocks everywhere. The staff are friendly, it was a good first experience to Mexico.
