“OK, but not great.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

This review is only for Barcelo Maya Beach, not other 4 Barcelo resorts next door ( although Caribe is supposedly exactly the same as Beach).
First, before arrival, I contacted the hotel through e-mail and requested the building #3, upper floor. They responded promptly, and assured me that all my requests will be fulfilled. I was impressed. But, when arrived, I discovered that they gave me the room in the building 2, 1st floor. Not very nice, considering their assurance that my room will be just as requested. Also, we arrived in the hotel at 12pm, and they said that the room is not ready until 3pm.
No problem. We walked up to the room and saw that the maid just completed the cleaning, so we returned to the front desk for our room keys, but the manager refused to give them to us until 3:00pm, not a minute earlier (!) even though the room was ready very early. Very poor customer service and rude reception manager at the front desk completely ruin the first impression.
Beach is OK, not great, 3 days there were huge waves and very windy. Some areas are more rocky. The ocean and the beach are the main reason why I travel to the Caribbean, so I was not very happy. I also happend to know a resort 10 min. from Barcelo with the beach that is infinitely better than this one.
Food is ridiculously bad at the buffet, not even the simple grilled chicken or other basics.
Food in the a-la-carte restaurants is better, but it is impossible to get reservations. Tip: $5 bill will get you a table without reservation.
Pools are OK, big but nothing special.
Rooms are basic, no lock at all in the bathroom (kids can walk in at the wrong time any moment), very noisy -- you can literally hear people breath in the room above, mattresses make very loud squeaking noise if you move even slightly. But, overall, no huge problems.
There is a lot of entertainment for little kids, like rock climbing, euro bungie, kiddie water park, etc. But it is scattered through all different resorts, so you have to take very long walks.
Overall, the resort is OK, but, as I travel extensively and have been to numerous all-inclusive resorts, I know that there are so much better alternatives out there for the same price or less . If I didn't know any better, I probably would be more happy with Barcelo.
Feel free to contact me for more specific information.

Room Tip: Building 3 is the best, buiding 2 (where we stayed) is OK. A lot of mosquitos on the first floor fac...

Our family just returned from my son's senior spring break. Paid for club premium to have a better room, upgraded drinks, able to get unlimited reservations ect. Lets start with room three people in party ONE bed....my son had to sleep all week on a thin couch mattress. Room smelled musty, electric would go out, traveling home got half my hair dried and all electricity went out in bathroom. We checked in to go back to get our Internet password ect, nothing explained about room package when we checked in, only room keys and how to get o room. Frig door would not stay shut, door on tv stand opened and it fell off. Beds hard, not enough pillows or towels for three people. When ask or complain they do not care. Our frig is suppose to be restocked with package to find out no not really you need to call if you want restocked (never told ). Rooms cleaned late in day. Slider door would not lock unless you pulled the door forward hold with hand to lock. Bar tenders at main pool bar at Tropical were very unfriendly. Our gold bands were suppose to be given top shelf drinks never given to us until we said each time gold band top shelf, then half he time they said they didn't have in stock. No restock of soap in bathroom. We were there at NCAA time bar tenders told us no on turning on game watched soccer or tennis. Food so so....rude staff at Steakhouse....very rude when trying to add one person to table. Club Premium in lobby never stocked. Delay, delay, delay is what we got .......club premium upgrade is a joke. Walking beach to look up to six armed men with guns strapped to backs, very unsettling. Police helicopter flying low over beach again unsettling.

Room Tip: Do not pay for upgrade they do not guarantee anything

The resort was amazing, the staff, the room, the grounds, the food, the drink, the beach is fantastic and great for boogie boarding...and especially RENEE in the Main Buffet. We celebrated 3 birthdays when we were there and RENEE made our experience "top notch", she showered us with Champagne and gave each of the birthday boyz a very special cake, which was presented to them (see photos)

Room Tip: Our room was in the UXMAL Building on floor number 2 at the end, amazing location...close to everyth...

We had a terrific time at this resort, which shares its grounds with four other Barcelo resorts: Caribe, Colonial, Tropical and Palace. The Palace is not open to guests of the other properties. The facilities are shared: beach, tennis, mini-golf, archery, kids club, teen club, climbing wall, waterpark, trampoline, pingpong, basketball, spa and gym. The trampoline and climbing wall are mainly for kids 12 and under. The teen club has a fuzball table and video games, including halo. There are many shows and restaurants. We had a premium room at the Beach, which gave us unlimited internet access, a la carte dinners every night, free room service, access to the VIP lounge and discounts on various activities, including spa treatments. The food was very good and our kids, 10 and 13, enjoyed the freedom of wandering around the resort on their own. They also enjoyed the Segway tour. We enjoyed being at a large resort as there was always something to do!

Room Tip: The premium rooms face the beach but you are not right on the beach. There is a pool and activities...

Beach is beautiful, resort and food is very nice. The security and police continually hassled teenagers and fined people left and right even if they were 18. Our passport information was copied onto a form that was left in someone elses room, they recycle their paper. When we complained they couldn't care less. 2 kids that were in our group were beat up when walking home to their room. They were trying to steal from them. Police helicpoters flew over the beach very low a few times. Very unsettling place as you always felt like you were being watched by the locals and police. Tons of teeangers on spring break so if you are looking for a quiet romantic spot this is not it. Beds were horribly uncomfortable and the room had a musty smell. If you do go the Japaneese steak house restuaraunt was the best.

Flew sunwing outta Vancouver...17 people age ranges 1-40. Beautiful beach, buffet was good & property was stunning. Not much to the teen club seen better. Not much to do as a family at night such as dancing....just shows in the big theatre. The club is 18+ so my children were kinda bored after a while.
I have stayed at other resorts eg: Sandos Caracol and they have nightly entertainment to suit all ages and dancing for all at the theatre
The beds were new so not broken in yet. The maids took towels and face cloths but didn't replace them all. It is very clean. The extra restaurants you can go in such as the steak house well over cooked everyone's filet minion (12) but my prime rib was perfect.
I prefer the smaller resorts over larger ones they are more personable and friendly for the amount you pay they treat you better.
The sunwing rep ripped us off on a tour. Well over charged the exchange rate. I went on a tour which had wave runners included but the sea was too rough. The owner call to let them know to refund 25% of the tour total, we went to see him and he took off on us.
Sent email to sunwing haven't herd a thing yet :(
All in all I think I'll stick to Thailand or the smaller resorts such as the allegro playa car it's good there.
Wifi was supposed to be included in the lobby area but had to pay:(

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

My husband and I just got back from our spring vacation at Barceló Maya Beach Premium resort where we stayed from March 18 to 28 (10 days). Trip Advisor information was giving this resort 4 points. This matched the official stars rating, which gave me more confidence. So we booked the deal and did not regret it.
However, for those who go there for the first time, be aware that the resort is in fact partitioned in 5 areas: Beaches, Caribe, Colonial, Tropical and Palace in the ascending order of quality stars. The guests can use the facilities of any lower and/or equal section. Beaches and Caribe are rated together at the lower end;Tropical and Colonial are in the middle while Palace is the top one, giving access to all 5. Beaches and Caribe are in fact in a much more nicer environment, the garden is exceptional, and are more closer to all the facilities (Spa Center, Market, Discotheque, beach, access to highway, etc.) than the 3 other much more expensive places. We had a room in the Caribe Labna hotel, 2 min from the beach, 2 min from the buffet, 2 min from the Spa, an easy stroll to Tropical and Colonial for our evening promenade. Marvelous! Where things get different is with the food. As we had no access to the higher buffets and restaurants, I cannot judge their quality. In Caribe the food is exactly the same as in Beaches, meaning Mexican and Spanish dishes with some variety not exactly for gourmet types. But I cannot say that we did not find our preferences and like it all! As for Tropical/Colonial, they have more of Italian and French cuisine.
Now that I sorted out the 5 types of places in the resort, I will try to identify what we loved and what not during our holidays.
Loved:
1. the cleanness of the place, exceptional! On March 20, all of the stuff was on the beach manually picking up and cleaning the beach from cigarette stubs and any other dirty object.
2. the friendliness of the stuff, exceptional! It is true that a good tip is appreciated, but much more a kind word and all of the Mayan descendants (they can very easily be identified due to their resemblance to the Mayan sculptures) love their native place and love to speak about it and about their life. And if you reciprocate, you feel you are now taken care of like a family member!
3. the perfect architecture of the resort: beautiful gardens surround each hotel; canopies from the hotel to the buffet in case it rains and you do not have an umbrella!; statues of Mayan gods everywhere.
4. the beach with its dozens of coconut trees and textile covered long chairs.
5. the breeze on the beach.
6. the taxis, 1 $US / km : you can go anywhere to Tulum (70$ two ways), Coba (including Tulum 150 $US 2way) and Playa del Carmen (50 $US 2ways); the cab driver will wait for your return; as an extra we gave him 5USD for a refreshing drink while he was waiting for us (we went to Tulum only (3 hours) but I regret not going Coba-Tulum (full day); By the way: we followed one of the Trip Advisor recommendations to get to the ruins site early, and we urge you to do the same, there is a big difference to be ahead of the people arriving with the tours. And do not be afraid, the taxis (cabs) are safe and sure. You can ask for one at the bell boy desk of Beaches or Tropical.
Where not impressed by:
1. The snorkeling from the beach: if you really want to snorkel you must take the snorkeling tour (1/2 day or full day) and this was not one of my options. Some said on Trip Advisor that you can do snorkeling from the pier. True, you can get down in the water by the ladder (however getting back on the pier is short of a heroic attempt!), you can see some fish, the very ugly tuna kind, and say that you did some snorkeling. Well, those who went to Sta Lucia, Roatan, Playa Pescuero will not find this location to be, not even remotely, the same. This was my biggest disappointment, Trip Advisor advisors' misleading information.
2. SunWing on board services: why is it that all travelers complain about the bad meals on the first flight and of the cold air on the return flight? Is it a policy of the company that we must not eat before reaching the beach and be kept frozen until we hit home? And how is it that the same luggage has good weight on the outgoing flight but (and how convenient for the company) you exceed the weight on the return flight and must pay for the difference!
3. Resort organization: ways and ways to improve. For instance: We stayed 10 days and were entitled to 4 à la carte restaurants. But we could reserve only2 because none was available for the first 5 days. However, when we got to the restaurants, on both occasions, there were plenty of available tables and the restaurants were not crowded at all! The rooms are clean but the cleaning team forgets to replace all towels, sheets are changed but not the pillow covers, water bottles are replaced I the mini-bar but not the soft drinks, and so on!
4. Access to the Internet: I cannot believe that in this time and era, such a big resort like Barceló does not provide Wi-Fi Internet access for free!

Room Tip: Try to have a room in the Uxmal or Labna hotels who are the nearest to the beach.
