“One of the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2009

My husband and I and another couples (ages 33-38) just returned from a 7 night stay at the Cat. I do not have a way to put into words how wonderful our trip and stay at the Cat was.

First, let me begin with a little bit of background. My husband and I have visited 10 all inclusives - the Dominican, Riviera Maya, Jamaica, Bahamas, Puerto Vallarta. We usually aim for a well rated hotel that is a good deal. We've done everything from a Sandals resort to a 3 star. We are flexible and pretty easy going, but are looking for a good time, good service, nice rooms and decent food.

After researching for months, we landed at the Cat and we could not have been happier. This is the cleanest ( we watched them clean every chair by the pool every night), friendliest resort we have stayed at. We did upgrade our rooms (a standard deluxe and a suite) and they were wonderful. The food was delicious and had a lot of variety. The beach was gorgeous and the drinks were plentiful.

The only resort that tops our list is the Ocean Blue in the Dominican Republic.

The one negative I have to offer is that the beach is a cove and not good for long beach walks. However, walking and riding bikes around the community of Puerto Aventuras more than makes up for it.

The beach snorkeling is great - invest in a mask and snorkel if you want to go out more than one time a day. There is a lot of fish - we saw a few barracuda.

There is plenty to do in the evenings - the game room is fun, the music is good and the bars offer a great place to relax, play cards and visit. We did not see any shows but we heard that they were fun. The disco is also fun.

The staff is hardworking with a lot of smiles which is very nice. We didn't see one employee grumble about anything during our stay. We also enjoyed not being pressured by any time share staff or excursion staff.

This is a diamond in the rough resort - I recommend it with no hesitations.

Just got back from the Cat Maya, stayed in Suite.. to my new friends from Ilinois--Wicked Awesome!.
BEST PART OF THE TRIP = STAFF!- can not say enough about how wonderful they are, helpful friendly, and happy. Did not meet one person who was not friendly. Did meet some vacationers downright rude to the staff at front desk, and other areas.. shame on you!!!
Suites= superior, special thanks to Alma our housekeeper. Fold out couch was wooden slats with a thin foam cover, called housekeeping.. another foam topper on the bed within 15 minutes, helped. My sensitive 13yo girl was very comfy.. you can also use the foam cushions from the couch under the sheets to sleep on.
Pools- great, animation team superior but not pushy.. they work so hard, and also perform in the shows at night which are kinda cheesy, but you can appreciate their hard work and long days.
Beach- no surprises.. just as stated here.. great snorkeling.. need water shoes or fins.. yes you can swim a bit in a clear section, or do laps in the lagoon.. We loved the beach because of this feature.. never boring.
Bars- loved the chill out bar on the beach, sat every morning, they have coffee and doughnuts available.
Puerto Adventuras 5 mins. away added bonus..live music, pretty at night, no pushy vendors, but you can bargain, went to SiSiSi restaurant, only open for 3 weeks. EXCELLENT! will review that under restaurant section..
Food= Japenese and Mexican Excellent, buffets, good, different seletions all the time. some repetition, although food was fresh.

My husband and I stayed at the CAT 4/18-4/24 and had a wonderful time. We'd been reading tripadvisor reviews daily for months before our trip and have to say thanks to everyone who wrote a review -- this place was great!

We ended up upgrading to a $35 extra oceanfront room on the Yucatan side. We never did see what a standard room was like, but our room was great. It had everything we needed -- a bed, bathroom, and water and beer in the fridge! We had that added bonus of an ocean view, which was nice to see the sun rise in the mornings. We were pleased with the Yucatan side, as the two resorts are so close together. The Yucatan side has all the activities with the A team and it was fun to watch all the activities as we relaxed.

The food was great. I would consider myself somewhat picky, not adventurous when it comes to food, and I always found something good to eat. My husband is very adventurous with food and was pleased with everything. Neither of us ever got any type of sickness while we were there. We ate at the Steakhouse, Japanese, and Mexican and enjoyed them all. The Creperie was delicious, don't miss that!

The staff works so hard and was so delightful to be around. They were always saying hola and always busy making the resort look beautiful. It really gave us a good impression of Mexico and the people who live there. We did tip the bartenders, maid, and waiters daily.

We were glad we brought water shoes as the water is a bit rocky. We also brought our own snorkel gear from home and enjoyed seeing tons of beautiful fish every day. The bubba keg mugs also came in handy! The beach isn't that large but it was adequate. We truly enjoyed our stay and would go back in a heartbeat. You can't go wrong for the price. It was a great vacation. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

We stayed here for 10 days in August. The rooms were comfortable and the food plentiful. The kids loved lounging by the pool, getting snacks whenever they wanted and in the evening they disappeared to the Sports Bar. They food they didn't really have time to join in the activities, but there was plenty going on if you want that sort of thing.
The location was great for visiting the area. We hired a car and went to Tulum, Coba and some of the cenotes. The kids favorite day (we loved it too) was at Hidden Worlds - zip wires into the cenote - great fun.

We stayed at the Catalonia Riviera Maya for 6 days in November. Absolutely loved this resort. Can't wait to go back. On our next trip we will take the kids. This resort is kid friendly, but not overpowered with kids. Food was good - Japanese was amazing. Room very comfortable - the upgrades are definately worth it. Loved the sports bar. The staff was amazing. Absolutely no complaints. Snorkeling in front of the resort was just as good as an excursion we went on. We brought our own gear so that we could snorkel whenever we wanted. We did take advantage of the bus trip to Playa Del Carmen and enjoyed it very much. Definately recommend this hotel.

We just returned from the Cat and stayed April 11-18. We had a fantastic time and didn't want to leave!

The food is great even at the buffets. We ate at the Mikado (Japanese) and found it fabulous. We also tried the mexican and it was fair. We preferred the variety of the buffet and the Creperie at the end of the meal.

The staff are the hardest working people I have ever seen. Do take lots of singles for tipping. The standard rooms are basic but spotless. The grounds are immeccable as well.

We really didn't do the shows as we were so tired at night. We walked to the marina and swam with the dolphins and saw babies with their mothers which was adorable. We took advantage of the free shuttle into Playa Del Carmen and took a taxi back (only $160 pesos for 4).

I would reccommend this resort to anyone and really cannot understand why someone would not like it. Bring water shoes so you can go out and feed the fish and snorkel on site.

Wish I was still there!!!!!!

I was very happy with the Catalonia Riveria Maya. First, I need to thank all my fellow reviewers of this hotel and other hotels in the area. We wanted to plan a trip to celebrate a series of family birthdays. Our group included 7 grown adult family members. The reviews on Trip Advisor are why we booked this trip. They were overall dead on- I agree with them and will post my own below. So thank you...

We were at the Cat from April11-16. We arrived around noon on the 11th. Our rooms were not ready yet but the desk staff was very helpful and friendly. They gave us a quick overview of the resort and a packet with more details. We immediately booked our speciality restaurants- thank you Trip Advisor. ADVICE--- Book these ASAP. They fill very quick. We were given 2 dinners. At first we were diappointed with only 2, but that is plenty.

Several hours later our rooms were ready. The rooms were beautiful. We had a suite and 3 deluxe rooms. The upgrade is worth it. All 4 rooms were very close to each other. They all had a fridge stocked with beer, water and pop. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom beautiful. The view was lacking- we looked out at a condo complex next door. They all had these soaking tubs (more or less a large bathtub) that we never used.

Meals were great. The buffets had many options- meat, fish, chicken and vegetarian. There is a grill where several items are made to order. The food was fresh, tasted good and there were tons of choices. We went to two speciality restaurants- the Japenese and the Mexican (the other choices are Italian and a steak house). Both were great. The Japanese was an habachi. Not the best hibachi I've been to but it was fun. We had sake and tons of food. We had one vegetarin in the group and the made her meal special away from any meat. We were served sushi, soup, fried rice and options for any combination of steak, chicken and shrimp. Desert was an interesting fried ice cream. The Mexican restaurant was very good too. Tons of very good food and friendly staff.

There are 5 small pools- 2 with swim up bars. One of the pools was filled with activities the other 4 more or less laid back. The beach was fine. There is a small beach filled with 3 rows of lounge chairs. This area was elevated above a retaining wall. Below was the real beach and the ocean. A little rocky and water shoes are a must. But the ocean was beautiful. Once you get out a bit, you hit a sand bar and the water is only up to your knees. There is also a lagoon with a larger beach and less wavy ocean. Included in the stay is an hour of snorkeling a day and an hour of kayaking. The ocean was a little rough while were there. However, one day it was a little calmer. We were able to see tons of amazing fish while snorkeling. Kayaking was a ton of fun too.

At night there are several bars. There is the Pure Chill out bar. This is outside where you get a nice breeze off the ocean. There is Abuelo- where they have a band nightly. There is a show every night. I only went to one. It was ok. Kinda funny- kept you entertained- but this is not why you make the trip to Mexico. The night club seemed like the 16-20 crowd only. I only went once and was about 15 years older than the next youngest person- and I don't think I'm very old. The sports bar has airhockey and pool and darts. Tons of alcohol everywhere, and non alcoholic drinks too. No Jack Daniels though- but other whiskey options.

Overall a great trip. if you are looking to go clubbing then go elesewhere. If you are looking for a chill vacation with good food, relaxed atmosphere, a variety of people (from all over the world- many from UK, Canada, France, Germany Russia and of course the USA) this is the place to go.
