Hello. We spent our honeymoon at the Catalonia from Oct 4 - Oct 9.
The resort is beautiful; the grounds are very well maintained, and the rooms are nice (we had a fantastic view of both the pool and the ocean). The staff is very friendly, but we felt a little bit lost upon our arrival. After check-in, there was nobody to give us any information about any of the resorts facilities. Luckily I had read many reviews here and had a good idea of how to make reservations and get around and such.
We are not particularly picky about food in general, but we found the selection at the buffets and the restaurants to be mediocre at best. I did have some nice shrimp with bacon & cheese at the Mexican restaurant, but nothing else really stood out. The Italian restaurant was awful. I ordered a pasta with spinach sauce & cheese, but what I got was basically undercooked Kraft macaroni and cheese with some spinach in it. Yuk! There were a few good items on the buffet (the made-to-order omelets and the desserts were good), but overall the food was the worst part of an otherwise perfect trip.
We weren't able to participate in many of the resorts activities... The sailboats were either booked, or not going out every time we asked. Oddly, we only ever saw one boat out on the water the whole time and there was only one person (I assume a hotel employee) on board. We went to two shows in the theater. It was very hot in there and we only stayed for half of one show (the second we stayed for the whole show). It was a fun diversion despite the heat.
We spent one day on the Tulum/Xel-Ha trip. That was a very nice trip. Tulum is beautiful and snorkeling at Xel-Ha was amazing. We also swam with the dolphins in Puertas Aventuras and that was well worth the money. We also encountered a friendly sloth there… He was really cool. On our final day we took the shuttle to Playa Del Carmen to shop. The shuttle was on time & clean – no complaints there. The town is great for shopping and it was a nice time.
That's about it... Feel free to email me with questions.
Cheers!
-Bryan

My Husband and I returned from the Catalonia Riveria last night Oct 10/04 and if I could turn around and go back I would. This resort has everything you could possibly want in a vacation.
The food is incredible and lots of choice. The ala carte restaurants were outstanding and the attention to detail is very noticeable. There is so much to do, or nothing at all if you want. The resort has five pools and lot of chairs around them so you never have to worry about not getting one.
They have a private lagoon and a reef for snorkling. A short walk to Puerto Adventuras for shops and you can watch people swim with the dolfins. We had a hobbie catamaran ride, no extra fee. There is so much staff you are tripping over them and they are always cleaning or sprucing up the place. The staff are so friendly and happy to help and have lots of fun. The managment is always around, checking to see if you are having a great time. We met great people and had a wonderful time, we will definatley be going back to this resort.

We are seasoned travelers, having stayed for a week or more on each of most of the Caribbean Islands, and having traveled throughout Europe and Asia, but what a lovely, relaxing, and surprisingly inexpensive stay at the Catalonia Riviera. Great food(!), plenty of good drinks, wonderfully friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful grounds. I have read a number of complaints about the food and gotta wonder what these complainers are accustomed to eating? All the food we experienced at the 5 restaurants and snackbar at the Catalonia and the Lookea was very near cruise ship quality!!! And food just doesn't get much better than on cruise ships! We'll be back next year, without a doubt. The Catalonia beats any of the 6 different 4 & 5 star resorts we've stayed at over the years in Cancun! We've really outgrown the Cancun experience, but still wanted to enjoy the Mexican Caribbean, and couldn't have made a better decision. Feel free to write for additional first hand info.

My boyfriend and I have just returned from Mexico and we had a brilliant time staying at the Catalonia Riviera Maya.

The hotel itself was beautiful, the staff, the food and the entertainment were all amazing. The people who work there will do anything for you and they constantly work very hard!

It is definately the best hotel we have ever stayed in and we would definately love to go back.

We spent two weeks there and had no problems at all.

We got blown out of Jamaica and booked this resort the night before. Five of us were travelling three adults and two babies....and we had a wonderful time. The place has 5 pools, 5 bars, a disco, a huge theatre, 3 restaurants and two buffet restaurants and a snack bar....and we use them believe me!!!!!! My only problem experienced through the stay is that we had an extremely hard time getting hot salsa...at the end of theh stay we finally got the waiters {who were wonderfully especially Marcos} to make us hot salsa....we couldn't understand being in Mexico and not being able to get hot salsa easily...otherwise the food was great....especially the deserts...we didn't get a good opportunity to snorkle due to the hurricane that passed Cuba....stirred up the water....however the day if finally got calm...let me tell you snorkle far out by the rocks and be prepared to see thousands of fish...Bring booties for the water and bring lots of sun lotion...it is expensive there and you will need it...we were using 50 and got really dark
