Hello. We spent our honeymoon at the Catalonia from Oct 4 - Oct 9.
The resort is beautiful; the grounds are very well maintained, and the rooms are nice (we had a fantastic view of both the pool and the ocean). The staff is very friendly, but we felt a little bit lost upon our arrival. After check-in, there was nobody to give us any information about any of the resorts facilities. Luckily I had read many reviews here and had a good idea of how to make reservations and get around and such.
We are not particularly picky about food in general, but we found the selection at the buffets and the restaurants to be mediocre at best. I did have some nice shrimp with bacon & cheese at the Mexican restaurant, but nothing else really stood out. The Italian restaurant was awful. I ordered a pasta with spinach sauce & cheese, but what I got was basically undercooked Kraft macaroni and cheese with some spinach in it. Yuk! There were a few good items on the buffet (the made-to-order omelets and the desserts were good), but overall the food was the worst part of an otherwise perfect trip.
We weren't able to participate in many of the resorts activities... The sailboats were either booked, or not going out every time we asked. Oddly, we only ever saw one boat out on the water the whole time and there was only one person (I assume a hotel employee) on board. We went to two shows in the theater. It was very hot in there and we only stayed for half of one show (the second we stayed for the whole show). It was a fun diversion despite the heat.
We spent one day on the Tulum/Xel-Ha trip. That was a very nice trip. Tulum is beautiful and snorkeling at Xel-Ha was amazing. We also swam with the dolphins in Puertas Aventuras and that was well worth the money. We also encountered a friendly sloth there… He was really cool. On our final day we took the shuttle to Playa Del Carmen to shop. The shuttle was on time & clean – no complaints there. The town is great for shopping and it was a nice time.
That's about it... Feel free to email me with questions.
Cheers!
-Bryan
