“Muy Bueno!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013 via mobile

We booked this holiday via Hayes & Jarvis (flight thru Virgin Atlantic)
Fantastic holiday! We made the wise decision to upgrade our rooms from the standard doubles to the Catalonia Prestige rooms, we done a deal with the concierge and paid £140.00 (GBP) for the fortnight to upgrade
Our rooms were amazing, with baths on the balcony, room contained a large bedroom, living room with free mini bar, shower room, separate toilet, dressing area etc... You also got free use of the safe.
There was also an evening service, where the maid visited and turned down the bed! Lovely.
Free dressing down and slippers too! Nice touch

There are a variety of different swimming pools, plus of course the lovely sea, which is also great for snorkelling.

The restaurants available onsite are vast, we recommend the steak house, the food is AMAZING!!!

The reception staff were more than helpful, we had previous reviews of people moaning about the staff, but we have genuinely never met a friendlier bunch!

Trips that we would advise of are Xcaret, this is an Eco park just up the road from the Catalonia. If you're into wildlife and fun days out for couples or family, this day is a must!
Playa del Carmen is also a really nice day out, you can chill on the beach or do some shopping on 5th Avenue.

We wanted to visit Chitzen Itsa, but decided not to after we had heard that it gets a little over crowded...
We hired a car for approximately £60 for the days, and drove ourselves to Coba, another Mayan ruins site. About an hours drive (much less that Chitzen) along a very long straight motorway. With plenty of stunning Mexican villages to stop at along the way if you wish.

Within the resort that Catalonia is based in, there is a stunning marina, worth a night out down there one evening, the restaurants and food are really high quality, plus you can sit and watch the dolphins for FREE! What more could you ask for?

Would highly recommend this holiday to anyone, and I wish one day I would have the opportunity to revisit

We booked a last minute trip and headed back to the cat Yucatan side! Upon arrival we were booked into a 1st level room with 2 double's and a patio view of the kids park.....not so much! Went back up to the lobby and asked for a upper level with a king, Pablo at the desk was very accommodating. They didn't have one on the Yucatan side so he put us on the RM side for the night then we moved the next day to the Yucatan 3rd fl just where we wanted to be. Thanks again Pablo!

We really enjoy the cat staff from lifeguard Jorge, day Time chill out bar Jeremias remembered us from 2 years ago and also asked where our girls were! Manuel and Alfonso and the day time boys at the tequila bar are very good at their job, thanks guys! Maid service was always done early and they did a great job.

Food was good to very good, I usually have a day with stomache issues not this time...

We did rent a golf cart for 24 hrs just to cruise around, found a couple beaches to hang out at. We did borrow the bikes as well went the lagoon that gordandar had told us about we didn't go in as it didn't look very easy to get out, maybe next time! Thanks for the info...

Took a cab to akumal 20usd from the lobby, had we rented the golf cart earlier we would have realized its not too far to the gated entrance, ride a bike up and the collectivo is just a short walk under the highway, again next time!

Thanks for a great trip Cat Yucatan!

Returned to the Catalonia Riviera Maya/Yucatan Jan.13th to 20th 2013 where we were joined by our daughter and her boyfriend from Calgary. We felt like the Cat. rolled out the red carpet for us based on the awesome suite we were given and dinner options, maybe because being a return guest? The service and staff again were over the top for politeness and friendliness and it was very nice to be remembered and hugged by many of them, even Alfredo at the reception desk ( I will get back to him later in the review). During our stay there was a power outage due to a transformer change out, not sure if it was on site or something with the incoming supply. Some guests got pretty irate at staff and even other guests. Realize these resorts operate 24/7 365 days a year so stuff wears out and maintenance needs to be done, so sooner or later someone will have to tolerate a little inconvinence. During the outage the staff pooled together, with some even staying past the end of their shift to help out, and managed to get everyone fed. Bravo! I always travel with at least 2 flash lights but for some reason I brought a 3rd (LED work light) which came in handy as I gave it to the bartenders at the Tequila bar to light up their work area and bar. They were pleased, as well as the guests, as the bar was able to stay running. To those who yelled at staff because of the power outage, shame on you as it was not their fault. And to those who tolerated it, bravo for being patient and still enjoying the moment. We had a good time!
Getting back to Alfredo...He is truly a gentlemen and a credit to the Cat but what you have to be aware of, is his dry sense of humour. He is a joker, but he will look after you very well, just like his father Pablo. I highly recommend the Catalonia Riviera Maya and Yucatan for a nice relaxing, and fun visit. The food is terrific, the services are many with lots for everyone to do, and how could you not have a terrific time in such an amazing country like Mexico?

Room Tip: It does help to pay for the up grade. The standard rooms are very plan I have to admit with no extr...

After staying at a Mega Resort down the road twice , we decided to try something different and booked an all inclusive package at the Catalonia Yucatan in Puerto Aventuras at a very reasonable price through Transat / Nolitours. I was concerned that we might be
disapointed , but it turned out to better than we had expected it would be.
Honestly , it took us a couple of days to warm up to a resort experience different from what we are used to. By the end of our stay , we understood why many loyal guests go back time after time.
It has most of the same amenities as the big resorts , but compacted down to a smaller scale. The downside to that is that there seem to be more people per square meter , the upside is that trips back and forth to the room are quick as opposed to a long trek. More people seemed to add to the fun factor. Made the big resorts seem kind of boring in hindsight. Even though I didn't participate with the daytime activities , I did enjoy watching them.

We were 3 couples and booked the Yucatan section , but were given rooms in the Riviera Maya section which I think might be slightly nicer than the Yucatan. We booked a standard room , and that's what we got. Nothing wrong with it , but nothing too fancy. We had 2 double beds in our room , 1 King is the other option in a standard room. The short walk to the bars made the lack of a minibar fridge irrelevant to us. Paying for the safe was no biggie either. It was $3 per day , and we have paid $5 per day at other places. There is no safe key to carry around and loose , you program in a combination to use during your stay. I vote for increasing the room rate by $3 and giving the safe for "free". Paying extra for something , anything , at an "all inclusive" annoys people.
We were never pressured to upgrade , in fact it was never even mentioned. There were absolutely no time share promoters on the property. No annoying vendors out on the beach either. Vendors , artisans etc. set up tables around the courtyard in the evenings.

The resort , and the shops within , accepted Canadian cash or Peso's , but not US dollars. US was OK for tiping. The exchange rate when you paid in Canadian was 13.5 pesos per dollar , which I thought was pretty good. They were only paying 11 pesos per dollar at the on site cambio if you wanted to exchange Canadian or American for pesos. That was not such a great deal. There is an ATM on site that dispenses pesos at a good rate , but I haven't taken the time to figure out exactly what the rate was. There is a $3.50 transaction fee.
I used the Machine a few times. One time I got my money and walked out just as a security guard was walking in. I said good morning and then headed up to the lobby to break a 500 peso bill for smaller. While there , the security guard showed up with my bank card and a ATM receipt. I thanked him profusely for tracking me down. The next time I used the machine I was more careful , and much to my horror I realized that I had walked away the day before just as the machine was asking me if I wanted another transaction. ( I really should learn how to speak and read spanish ) For those of you wondering , a check of my bank account upon returning home showed no surprise transactions .

The resort staff (every single one of them ) were very friendly and accommodating. The front line staff for the most part were quite fluent in english , and also seem quite used to catering to French customers. The support staff , room cleaners that I met were not as good with english , but very friendly and did a great job. Service at the buffets , a la cartes , and bars was quick and very attentive . Waiters walk out to the pools and the beach to take drink orders and serve them to you. The coffee station that was set up near the lobbies each morning was removed around 7:00 am , a little too early in my opinion , after that you would have to go down to the restaurant to get your morning coffee.

2 weeks ago , we would not even have considered leaving our 4 year old daughter at a kids club in a resort , but after hearing good things from other guests we did. The ladies there ( Sharon and Xoana ) were awesome and we felt very comfortable leaving our daughter with them for a few hours. They really got to know each and every child that they cared for , and did scheduled daily activities in the mini club as well as out and about in the resort. Our Daughter actually asked to go to mini club on several days which gave us time to enjoy hanging with others from our party. Another bonus to it being a smaller resort is that we could actually see the mini club from the pool bar and wander over and peek in to see how our hard to entertain little girl was doing. You could see which kids were coming and going so you kind of knew when she was running out of little friends. IF there WAS actually any problem I am confident that one of the ladies would have come out and found us to let us know within just a few minutes.
We also had the pleasure of having dinner with 3 of the Managers at a meet and greet dinner for about 25 guests ( Trip Advisor junkies ).
It was a pleasure to meet Sylvia the General Manager , Joel the Food and Beverage Manager , and Ricky the Entertainment manager. All 3 are clearly passionate about their jobs. Throughout our stay , every time I met up with one of them , they stopped to chat with me.

The Beach itself was very nice , fine sand and a good number of palapas and beach loungers. The water entry was rocky at the southern end , but more sandy at the northern end. Getting in and out was not really a problem , you just have to go in at one of several good spots. A few feet out from shore it was nice sand. The lagoon was great for kids and first time snorkelers. Some pretty good snorkeling right in the bay in front of the hotel and less than 20 meters from shore. Water was shallow enough there to stand up. (please do not stand on top of the reef) If you were a bit more seaworthy , there are a couple of good spots out beyond the rocky breakwater in front of the lagoon.

The entertainment staff worked hard every day ( 12 hour shifts ? ) to keep things lively and provide fun. Same people also did the evening shows. Some shows were better than others. The Nightmare show was our favorite , maybe a bit much for very conservative folks.
The Lion King show was a big hit with our Daughter. Pita from the entertainment team was very good in the shows and seemed to have endless energy and enthusiasm keeping people smiling during the day. I wish I had paid more attention to some of the others' names so I could give them the credit due.

The food at the Buffets was quite good , and seemed to be replaced with fresh in a more timely manner than I was used to at other resorts. There was a line up at the buffet every morning , however only for a short time. It seemed like every one went for breakfast at the same time.
If you went slightly earlier , or slightly later , there was no line up. Hostess did have a counter in her hand , and controlled the number of guests in the restaurant at any given time. It may have been frustrating for some guests standing in line while looking at empty tables inside. I tottaly understand why this is done. If the restaurant was completely full , getting your food would be a gong show and waitstaff would be overwhelmed. Service level and customer satisfaction would definitely suffer.
The Meet and greet dinner at the Bambelo grill was absolutely perfect , both the food and service was top notch. Unfortunately , that was the highlight for me as far as a la cartes went. We did 3 a la cartes , the service was better than the food. I feel bad saying it , because I personally liked the resort , staff , and management , but this is an area with room for improvement. That was my personal experience and opinion , others I spoke to quite enjoyed the a la cartes.

We hit the creperie every evening. Sometime after dinner , sometimes before dinner , sometimes both. There was 1 waiter up there who had a great sense of humor and messed with our heads more than once. Lots of calories up there and lots of laughs.

And finally........ my only real "complaint" , and it is not about the Catalonia Specifically , but more about the Puerto Aventuras Marina tourism area in general. . . It is a 20 min walk out to the entrance. Many of the guests are there because the resort is more affordable than others down the highway. Guests traveling on a budget may want to take advantage of the Colectivo system , and paying for a taxi to take you to the bus stop just doesn't make sense. Ideally , there would be a tram going back and forth to the front gates on a schedule , and the cost of it could be shared by all of the accommodation providers within the gates.

In summation , we enjoyed our stay , and considering the price will likely return to the Catalonia. We would probably rent a car for the days we want to head out of the resort. The staff are the real stars here. The set up of the resort is particularly good for families with young children.

Room Tip: some of the rooms are very quiet and away from the pools and bars. If that is what you want , jus...

Let me start be saying I've been to the Catalonia four times. The first with a girlfriend in 2008. We had a blast, we stayed in a standard room which was very pleasant. The beds were a bit hard but slept well. The other three times (twice in 2012) were amazing. We did upgrade to superior and privileged superior. Very much worth the small upgrade fee. The rooms were always clean and spacious. The staff always helpful. We especially enjoy walking to the marina and shopping and having a margarita and chips at Gringos Cantina, live music also most nights. Enjoy watching dolphins play while relaxing with friends.... The restaurants have always had a variety of fare so we never come home under weight!!! The pools and beach area are great though main beach is rocky. Always plenty of palapas and chairs available. The entertainment staff are great and very friendly. Freddy even came to dinner at the marina with us one evening. I could do without the loud speaker in the afternoon by the pool but it is short lived and pita is hilarious!!! We have never visited the spa but have had wonderful massages overlooking the beach. No pressure for timeshares like at other resorts which takes away time you don't ever get back. We consider Catalonia our home away from home. Can't wait to go back, maybe October!!!!

Room Tip: Upgrade to superior or privileged superior for the best beds and service. Let staff know if your vis...

This was our first visit to the Catalonia and we were very impressed. I have traveled to Cuba, Punta Cana and Cabo and can truly say we had the best service I have ever experienced. Very attentive staff from all areas - front desk, bartenders, waiters and waitresses, hostesses, etc. Also the friendliest staff - everyone from the maids, to the animation team, gardeners, etc offered a friendly hola and great smile every time we saw them. The food was very good as well - can't imagine what people complain about given the variety available (and remember this is a four star). We had excellent meals at the Japanese and Tappas restaurants and good at the Italian and Steak restaurants. Loved the Creperie as well! We were very lucky to participate in a Trip Advisor Dinner set up by Pablo (BC-IT-Guy) at the Steak Restaurant which was attended by 3 managers. It was a great dinner, great company and a wonderful opportunity to meet the staff who were terrific and you could see truly care about their guests and their staff.

We really enjoyed snorkelling at the resort and if you stay on the left side and go just beyond the ropes around the rocks there are amazing fish. We also really enjoyed the proximity to the marina and enjoyed walking around there and seeing the dolphins/manatees/sea lions, etc.

We went to Tulum and Akumel Bay the one day and found it very easy to get a Collectivo just outside the entrance gates. It cost us $40 pesos each (less than Cdn $4) to get there. Was absolutely thrilled to see 3 large sea turtles while snorkeling at Akumel and it cost us nothing as we brought our own snorkel equipment. We also took the collectivo to Playa del Carmen and it was $50 pesos each - very easy and much cheaper than a taxi.

The only reason we are not giving a 5 rating as opposed to a 4 is the rooms. Our first night we were in a standard room (4119) which had an excellent view of pool and ocean but we had wanted to upgrade to Privileged. We moved the next day to Room 6023 and while the room was nicer and had great shower and view - we found the layout of the Privileged Rooms makes for a much noisier stay. The stairwells lead to each landing of 4 rooms and every morning we could hear people coming and going and the maids cleaning and it was quite loud. If you are someone who likes to sleep in past 6:30 or 7:00 you will need ear plugs! Also the Garden Room was fine in case anyone was concerned. The Privileged does offer though more a la cartes including the Tappas restaurant as well as a daily stocked fridge, a room safe that you don't pay for and an awesome shower. I would like to note that our maid was outstanding - cleaned the room beyond expectations, left amazing towel animals, and was very friendly.

We loved the Chill Bar location by the beach and all of the bars offered quick and attentive service and great drinks. Just ask for the name brands if you want them and they are quick to give them to you.

Overall, we were very very pleased with the resort and I would highly recommend.

This resort is connected to another Catalonia resort (Yucatan). You get 2 resorts for price of one. The other poolside bar stayed open later than ours. It was a short walk. You can eat in their buffet, swim in their pools. Both behind a secure community that is gated. Safe to walk to Dolphin Discovery - 0.75 mile. I did swim with a dolphin. It was fantastic. I got $109 package. Short bus trip to Tulum and Xel La which were both wonderful Enjoyed the steak specialty restaurant the most
