“Second time here- can't wait for a third!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012 via mobile

Our first visit was without the kids, this time we brought them. EXCELLENT entertainment staff!! You would think they all belonged on broadway when they performed on stage. The poolside activities were entertaining and engaging. Something for everyone, even introverted teens! The service from staff was attentive, always with a smile and sincere. NO harassment or time share or excursion sharks at this resort. The food was plentiful, tasty and a good variety. No reservations were required for the a la cartes, so sometimes there was a line up, worth the wait! You MUST try the creperie located at the top of the stairs by the main buffet. The rooms were well kept and clean with towel surprises left behind. The free water sports were easy to access right along the beach. The beach is a bit rocky but plenty of sandy access, great for snorkeling. So many varieties of fish to see! They love bananas and bread! Close by is a Marina (walking distance- very, very safe) there are shops, food, dolphins, manatees, seals and boats! I recommend going to Playa Del Carmen for souvenir shopping- a short taxi ride. Cheapest if you can coordinate another couple to share the expense. We loved the excursions Xcaret ( the show was AMAZING) Xplore was an adventure! And Xel Ha ! We definitely plan to return again someday!

This was our 5th time at the CAT and once again a great time! We stayed Oct. 18th thru Oct. 23rd. Short visit, but had a great time none the less. Definite decision made for next time is...stay longer!!! Our travel agent keeps asking us why we keep going back to the CAT and the reason being we like the size of this resort, it's so easy to get around. Plus the fact we always find a great price.

We booked our trip through United Vacations and upgraded to the Superior Priviledged room when we originally booked, for a good price and were very happy we did. The king size bed was so comfortable, nice having a stocked refrigerator and not that it's a big deal, enjoyed being closer to the pools and beach. I was surprised on our first night when we realized that they turned our bed down for us at night.
We find the food very good. Breakfast is great, love the omlets, fresh fruit and juices! The Japanese restaurant is one of our favorites. However, this time was the first we tried the steak house. Food was very good there also.
Upon arrival because we were repeat guests, we were invited to a special dinner in the Mexican restaurant, were we dined with other repeat guests. It was a nice mixer, met people from England, Georgia, and Michigan.
The entertainment staff works so hard and they are very entertaining. We especially liked the events around the pool in the afternoon. Peta, is so energetic and really gets people involved. On Sunday, I believe was the Comedy show, and that was very funny and entertaining.
The front desk staff, bartenders, housekeeping, entertainment staff, waiters, cooks, grounds keepers, etc. work so hard.

We typically like to do a couple of excursions, but this trip was all about relaxation and rest. So, we didn't do anything except enjoy the resort, which was nice as the snorkeling, swimming (pool and beach), was enough. One morning we did take a taxi to Playa delCarmen to do some shopping, but actually I couldn't wait to get back to the CAT early that afternoon. We enjoyed a short walk to the Marina and stopped at Gringo's Cantina & Mangos for a beer and mingled with people. It's fun to see the dolphins & manatees at Dolphin Discovery.

We are already planning our next trip back.

We booked to stay in the Riviera Maya, but were actually put in the Yucatan side of the hotel, which gave us fabulous view of the sunrise each morning from our top floor room.
Room was fairly basic, but nice and very spacious with comfy beds and a small fridge.

Cleanliness was fantastic. Even after refusing our room cleaned late one afternoon, they returned on the night to do it. Staff scrubbed the pool areas including beds squeaky clean every evening.

Food was good in varying degrees:
Breakfast was good, plenty of choice.
La Creperie - excellent. This opened at 5pm and was great for a pre/post dinner coffee and snack.
Japanese - Good, the veg fried rice was the best bit.
Italian - Very good, we really enjoyed the food and wine here.
Tappas - Ok, but the choice was a bit restrictive as you had to pick a tappas bundle.
Grill - We both had fillet steaks, but mine was tough. Not a good dinner experience - apart from the company of a kitty that joined us at the table :)

Unfortunately we had a bad dining experience at the main buffet on Mexican night, they'd opened the other buffet restaurant and appeared to be very short staffed. We didn't get offered any drinks, not even water, and when we tried to get one at the bar we were told it would be brought over.... we left thirsty and a bit peeved!

Drinks were really good overall, there were a few cocktails that tasted cheap and nasty, but once we figured out the nice ones, good times! The Caipirinha's, Mojitos and G&T's were particularly good!

Wildlife is good. If you are up and about before 7:30am, you can see the extremely cute Agoutis scuttling around the grounds. There are plenty of Iguanas basking in the sun during the day too.
Snorkelling was great too. The reef is just feet away from the shore, so we spent lots of time chilling with the marine life. The sea got choppy at the end of the week, but the lagoon offers a lovely calm alternative for swimming and snorkelling.

Only real gripe with the resort was the music at the Tequila bar and the breakfast buffet, the constant repeat became tiresome after the 3rd day, we now know every word to 5 UB40 songs and every note in Robert Miles' 'Children' :)

Having Tulum and Akumal nearby was a real bonus. It was easy to take the local buses there, although the walk up to the bus stop on the highway was longer than expected.
Akumal was a real delight, swimming with the turtles and rays (for free) was out of this world! Beware the imposed $5 life vest charge if you get a locker at the dive centre though. Apparently it's in the interest of the reef and creatures to stop people diving down to touch them which is fair enough.

Overall, the holiday was a fab experience and I would recommend it.

Room Tip: For partial sea/pool views, ask for the Yucatan side of hotel. The Riviera side rooms didn't app...

Our group of 30 extended family members just returned from Catalonia Riviera Maya and everyone agrees that it was an awesome trip. We booked thru Cheap Caribbean and were shocked at what an awesome value we got for the price we paid. We had privileged rooms or suites which we were all impressed with.... Nicely upgraded, perfectly clean, comfortable, no complaints from anyone! The grounds of the resort were also extremely well maintained, including all the pools. Hotel staff was literally everywhere keeping things tidy and ready to help the guests in any way.
We had several young children in our group and they also had a wonderful experience. The girls from the kids club, Mara and Sharon, clearly enjoyed their jobs and cared about the kids. They made the parents feel quite comfortable about leaving the kids in their care occassionally. Our kids loved going to the club and also greatly enjoyed the interactive shows in the evenings where they got to go onstage and dance, play games, etc. Sophie, the 4 year old, even named her little
souvenir doll Mara so that she would remember her new friend.
There were also plenty of activities for the adults, young and older.
There was an endless supply of food and drinks which were very enjoyable. Many of us decided that the Tapas restaurant ended up being our favorite. When we first looked at the menu we were a little skeptical, but tried it anyway and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Everyone is already talking about going back. Since we are from North Carolina, we had previously rented large houses on the Outer Banks, but this was so much more enjoyable for a group that size and we all agreed not really any more expensive. So nice to have someone else preparing food and cleaning. Also nice that each family had their own space. Really made for a hassle free vacation.
I think all in our group would strongly recommend this resort!

Room Tip: I never saw a standard room, but was definitely impressed with the privileged rooms and suites.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

We just returned from this resort today. Stayed October 27th through November 3rd, We are writing this review from a young family perspective. We are on our early 30s with a 4 year old daughter. We have previously stayed at the Sandos Playacar, Palladium White Beach, and Sandos Caracol in the last three years. Those are our comparison points. I hope this review will be useful for other families travelling with children.

Out of all resorts we travelled to in the Riveira Maya, this one is by far the best for the money we paid. We got a great deal with Funjet for $2100 for all three of us, nonstop airfare included. We chose this resort because of cost, good reviews, and the active animation/staff. We enjoy getting involved in animation activities - especially beach volleyball, snorkeling, water polo, etc. So we are looking for resorts that are family and activity friendly - rather than a more relaxed - spa like atmosphere. We found everything we were looking for here.

Given we got a great deal, this resort exceeded all our expectations. As many poeple have said before, the grounds are super well maintained - they are spotless clean, with beautiful gardens. The beach is small, but what beach there is, is powder white sand and super fine and soft. Yes there is coral rock, but there are pathways into the ocean that don;t have rocks. if our 4 year old can find them and use them, so can you! And what you get in return are beatifully colored fish that swim right up to you. In the morning take a piece of bread and step 2 feet into the lagoon and the fish will greet you and almost eat out of your hand. A huge hit with our little one! The sea is the beautiful turquis waters you would expect from the caribbean. You can walk pretty far out and it stays shallow and you can see the bottom. We took the free rife on the catamoran (20min with free guide) and it was beautiful, and you could see the bottom of the ocean for a long ways out, with lots of nice fish around.

Yes, the resort is smaller. We didn;t mind, they make up for it with the full program of activities, You still have a lively side and a quieter side like most resorts, with each having their own pool areas and different atmospheres.

The staff is what makes this place so great. Everyone has a smile. They cater to you, are always one step ahead, greeting you, asking how they can be help, etc. They all loved our daughter and after a day most remebered us by our name. They are prompt, efficient, and very friendly. They do not expect a tip - though we did tip - but felt no pressure here as with other resorts. We stayed in a standard room. And we didn't feel that we were treated any differently than peaple who upgraded. The resort was at 40% capavity so that may be why - ut I wrote a week ahead of time with our room request and receieved a response that they will try to accomadate us the best they could. When we arrived, they placed us in the room we had requested (we requested 4134 in the Yucatan side due to the pool and ocean view). The view is gorgeous - the room was cleaned spotless, the beds were comfortable for Mexico beds, and we had nice toweal animals everyday. The maid knew our schedule and had the room cleaned while we went for breakfast so it was noce and ready when we returned for our daughter's afternoon nap. We asked for a fridge - knowing standard rooms do not have fridges - due to medication we needed to store - and they brought us a friedge. They didn't restock it, but here is the deal. The resort is small. There is a bar around every corner. You can ask for any drink to go. So fill up on your way to the rooma dn put them in the fridge. We had no issues. Yes, it would have been nice to have a fridge and have beverages in the room. But you can uograde to the privildge rooms if that is what you want for $40 extra a night. The way I look at it, if this is the way they can keep their standard rates so low and allow up to have one extra vacation a year, sure I can carry my own drinks to restock in the rooms :-)

So if you are active and do not spend much time in your room and if you do not place high value at all marble, the Ritz type of accomodations, you will enjoy the standard rooms. They are cleaned spotless - seriously. We have stayed in bigger rooms, we have stayed in rooms with more amenities, but none were ever this clean and smelling fresh, with AC running properly, and great ocean view to top!

They have 2 buffets. The La Brisa is bigger with more selection. But both pretty much offer the same foods. They have 4 a la cartes. The TAPAs restaurant (5th ala carte) is only for the privlidge section. But no worry, the food os good here for an all inclusive. WIll you always like everything they serve - no. But the selection is good, varied, and I have not heard anyone here ever talk about haveing any food poisening - that is huge for us with a little one! We enjoyed the food here very much - always fresh and hot.

The creperie is really good - open from 5pm to 10 pm only. They have milkshakes and ice cream as well. Try to Mocha shake - yummy! By the way they now have netting around the La Brisa - so hardly any birds there anymore.

The pools are really nice - warmer than other resorts -always cleaned spotless as well - yes spotless is a common theme here. What we really liked were the pools within the pool that were more shallow foor smaller kids - great idea whoeer designed these pools!

The animation staff is great. Not to pushy, but very engaging, funny, with tons of varried activities - and because this resort caters to active families - people actually participate and everyone had such a great time. We made friends with Brits, French, Russians - playing sand volleyball, water polo, karaoke, pool games, etc. The staff really knows how to keep the energy up - we loved it! Thanks Freddye, Louiz, and everyone else!

The sand volleyball court is great - nice sand, low net :-), lots of fun!

Now about the kids club. Our daughter has been to many and she usually doesn't mind staying for an hour or 2, but here we couldn't get her out of the kids club. They are open from 10 am to 5pm daily. Great thanks to Sharon and Mara. They actuallyhave some great activities planned for the kids each day and engage with them, play with them, do arts projects, go to the beach to build sand castles, look for shells, go to the pool, make cookies, paint pumpkins, do face painting, etc. We were here for Halloween, and our daughter wanted to be Belle - Sharon found here a Belle costume that fit her and outside of her work hours arranged for all the kids to go trick or treating around the resort. She is wonderful - a true asset to Catalonia! It is so much more relaxing and as a moM made me so very happy to see our little one have fun, make tons of friends from around the world and know shw was so well taken care of! They also have a mini disco for the kids at 8pm each night where Sharon and Mara come back and sing songs and dance and do a game with the kids. It's a good way to end the day for the kiddos.

Puerto Aventuras as previously stated is a private gaited community. very safe, we walked to the marina and watched the dolphins, stingrays, and manitees. It's a nice (inexpensive/free) excursion outside of the resort you can do all by yourself.

All in all we found the staff at Catalonia to be one of the best. We have found the grounds beatiful. The active atmophere is exactly what we were looking for. What suprised us was the care they put into their children's activities and kids club and how family oriented the staff is. It made for a relaxing, vacation for all os us where our daughter had the time of her life and my husband and I were able to play sports, find new friends, enjoy great food, and even some romatic alone time. Thanks Catalonia - we would difinitely recommend to annyone who looks for the same thing out of their vacataions as we are!

Room Tip: We stayed in 4134 - standard room, but with pool and ocean view.

We stayed here with our friends from Oct 27 - Oct 31, 2012. Had no idea what we would encounter based upon all the mixed reviews. Overall very good.

First, we did decide to upgrade when we got there because we wanted a king size bed (versus the two double beds), the safe, and the fridge with the extra water, and so on. It was $160 extra total, per room for the 4 nights.
I did not want to be on the ground floor and also wanted a decent view. Reception desk workers were patient and accommodating. We stayed in the Riviera side (versus Yucatan) and were in 6033 - our friends were in 6024. Both rooms had nice views of the lagoon and the sea beyond it.
Second - I never noticed this on the Boards here, but you cannot/should not drink the water in the rooms. It is listed in the hotel manual in the room, but not easily noticeable. You should not even use it to brush your teeth. Use the bottled water. I confirmed this with the employees there. The water is purified in the restaurants and bars, but not in the hotel rooms.

Third. Contrary to what we read in other reviews, you do NOT have to wear long pants to the a la carte restaurants. My husband and our friend both did put on slacks and nice shirts on the first night, and most other men were in shorts and many sloppily dressed and looked like ragamuffins. One man didn’t have his shoes on at first, and we were in the Japanese restaurant!!

Fourth. Not all restaurants are open on each night, and it was not at all clear which ones were going to be open and on what nights. We had 3 vouchers that we could use amongst the Japanese, Italian, Mexican, and Steakhouse, and a 4th that we could only use at the Tapas. We specifically asked about the Italian restaurant and were told it would be open on Tuesday night. And the Japanese was to be open on Sunday night. So, we planned accordingly and did the Buffet – La Brisa – on Sat night, our first night. Then Japanese on Sunday night. On Monday night we used the Tapas Terrace voucher and then on Tuesday, it turned out that they closed all of the restaurants and had a Mexican Fiesta in the Buffet!
So we did not get to use our vouchers and we did not get to eat in the Italian restaurant.

Food. The food at the Japanese restaurant was very good. We did end up waiting 2 hours before being seated. I think this is due to the restaurant being smallish AND the fact that so many of the other restaurants were closed that the majority of guests were at this one.
I was not a fan of the Tapas Terrace food. I thought the menu was confusing and I did not really care for the choices. When I left there I was still hungry.
The breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets in the La Brisa were fine, but as others have said on here, they get boring after a few days. Same with the lunch buffet in Bamboleo.

Drinks. They mainly have Corona Beer; I thought they would have had Dos Equis. Not a big deal – just an observation. We had a lot of fun visiting the various bars and swim-up bars. The drinks seemed fairly watered down, except for shots of tequila (I’m not really a tequila fan). The bartenders were very jovial and a lot of fun. My favorite spot was Pure Chill Out Bar and the gorgeous views of the sea from there.

Upgraded Room. So, we are glad we upgraded to a privileged room (not suite). They cleaned the room very well each day. As I already said, our view was great. Balcony was a decent size with two nice rattan, cushioned chairs and a table. The room itself seemed a little small - -but you are mostly in it to sleep and change your clothes.
Our friends’ room had a large flat screen HD TV; our room had a 19-inch 1990’s version TV – lol. When we checked in, our room had no bar soap, no slippers, lamp was missing the light bulb, and the clock did not work. I stopped at the reception desk and asked if we could get those items taken care of – they were very nice an followed up immediately. However, the clock never did work.
I only mention these items to show that there are inconsistencies between two privileged rooms in the same building one directly above the other on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Our friend’s had turn down service and a candy; we did not. I am not annoyed – just sort of amused.

Other. The grounds are very well groomed. The pools are kept very clean. The sand is always being raked. The sea was warm and clear. Lots of fish to look at. Ping Pong, Horshoes, Bocce Ball, Volley Ball all available. Kayaks were fun. Hobie Cats available – we did not feel confident enough to take them out. I did the stretching class on the beach, the water aerobics, and the dance lesson. Wanted to take out the bikes, but ran out of time. We walked to the Marina and watched the folks swimming with the dolphins. Always fun to watch.
I did not expect that so many women would be walking around, sunbathing, swimming and conversing while topless. Especially since there are many children at this resort. Again, just an observation that I had never heard mentioned on here.
As others have said, the staff all work very hard, and I found them to be very polite and helpful although I had a language barrier (do not speak Spanish). We came prepared with many U.S. ones and fives and tipped generously and often.
“Dia de los Muertos” is celebrated in Mexico from October 31 – Nov 2. The staff decorated La Brisa in a really great way – they did an amazing job and to think they had to do that after all guests were finished dining the night of Oct 30 and then have it ready to open early in the morning on Oct 31. Wow! Kudos!
Workers at the Airport in Cancun were also all dressed up – a great atmosphere.
I hope this helps the next visitors to Catalonia Riviera Maya.
