Stared at theEl Dorado from 10/3/14 for a week arrived by the Dreamliner plane which was very good. On arrival at the hotel we were given drinks and towels which we thought was going to be the start of a good holiday we were ushered to our room via a buggy and this is when we feel let down. On opening the Door to room 3815 we were hit by the powerful stench, a smell hard to describe, even the man carry the bags had to leave the room. We rang reception who sent housekeeping to look at the room. They were aware of the problem and place a burner into the room to try and combat the smell. This only made the problem worse. There was no way we could sleep in that room. We had to contact our travel rep via text and go to reception to get another room. We were told that we would have to pay another us$150.00 per night to change after a lot of discussion we were taken to another room which still had a smell but better than the first room. The next day we sort out the thomson rep who tried get us moved. All we wanted was a room that did not smell and was clean, we were unable to get another room until the 13/3/14. We were told that the rooms ion Mexico did have problems with damp and musty smells but have never experienced this before. The bed was comfortable but felt damp and musty it had no mattress protector which should be standard in a 5star hotel. The room are very dark and the lighting very poor . The jacuzzi bath looked old and dirty and there was no way we were going to use it.
The saving grace to this hotel was the staff who were very polite always saying hola and the food.the 7 restaurants give you a lot of choice and variety, the wine as meal times was cheap and bad tasting ask for the GI wine by the glass which comes at no extra price, don't buy a bottle.
The beach was clean in fact we enjoyed watching the men every day raking the beach and even cleaning the sea from seaweed. This hotel is over 20 years old and shows the signs of wear and tear. The pool areas need attention, the beach has broken beds. Which were taped off leaving less room on the already crowded beach. You also have to get up very early to get a beach bed they all seem to hogged by beach towels of which the owners of seldom make an appearance.
Since our return from this hotel I have washed all our clothes but the smell from the rooms still wants to linger, really horrible.
We spent as little time in the room as we could the entertainment at night as good and the entertainment team were very sociable and as they say excellente
This hotel could do with a refurbishment to bring it up to the standard it first started out with
