We stayed May 13th to 27th booking through thomson. The flight was ok, comfy seats considering it was an older plane. But, the crew ran out of cups, milk and sugar, and immigration forms. So,about 30 of us had to wait 20mins on the plane after others had got off, and then while trying to fill out the form correctly after a 10hour flight, we were asked to vacate the plane!!! Also, make sure you have a pen to do the forms, and make sure you fill in the bottom section aswell as the top. So, we ended up rushing off the plane, and filling it out on the airport floor, and in a que behind the two usa flights just arrived!!! It took about an hour to get through immigration and get our cases, were as others who had the form filled out on the plane were away in about 25mins!! We had booked a private transfer so we could arrive at the hotel a bit earlier, but arrived 10mins before coach due to the delay in immigration. Also, we told our thomson travel agent in the uk about our private transfer, and she said she couldnt inform thomson agents in mexico about this, so we had to tell them when we got through arrivals at cancun!! So people were waiting on the coach transfer for us for no reason!! How silly!!! The private transfer was nice though, very chilled out after the airport stress, and going home we had just over an extra hour at the hotel, and arrived 10mins after the transfer coach, and had plenty of time to check in and clear security, plus it was very realxing just being us, thanks usa transfers! The flight home was ok, no broken toilets like a lot of flights seem to have. Again, things ran out, milk, and no tea left for some people at the back of the plane! Funniest thing was when they ran out of customer feedback surveys, the irony! Would not book through thomson again!
HOTEL- Lovely reception, calm, clean, cool, nice fragrance. We had a quick check in with wine and beer, and were taken to our room after a quick tour on the golf buggy. Our room was in block 3600 right at the back, and was a swim up. It was the quieter pool swim up block which we had requested. The room was clean, brilliant air con, loads of towels, smellies, massive shower with pretty good water pressure, lovely big comfy bed, flat screen tv, hairdryer, iron and board, umbrella, lots of drinks in fridge, coffee maker, and jacuzzi. only used jacuzzi once, but it was lovley. The swim up was fab, would definately do that again, we got the sun from about 10.30 to 12, so if you didnt want the beach that day, you could still get the sun. The rooms are in need of decorating and updating, and i wish the hotel had focused on this rather than building the new five storey block at the back of the grounds. They could do with a few more coat hangers too. Our room was always spotless, thankyou Pedro!
BEACH- Lovely and clean, and we got a beach bed after 11am, but if you want a specific area go down by 9.30ish. We stayed in the area between the water sports hut and the white gazebo as it was Grace the beach waitresses area, and she is the best!!! So cute and happy, and such fun!! I think some of the beach four posters could do with a renovation, and i wish they would clean them with something more than a dry towel at the end of the day, i wiped ours down daily with antiseptic wipes, for reasons that will transpire later!!! Plus, people are getting quite sweaty on these beds, and not all of this goes on the beach towel, so a wipe down daily with soapy water would be a good idea i think! The sand is a bit coarse here and there, but walkable bear foot. The sea area is where you need water shoes for sure. There are areas were you can have a float around near the white gazebo, but the snorkelling was sooooo much fun! we took our own cheap and cheerful snorkels and shoes, but you can get hotel snorkels till about 4pm. There is snorkel tour daily, but only if the red flag isnt up, which it was for our second week. The water is no higher than waste level, so even if it's a bit choppy you can stand up if you get panicked. I saw so many fish, but remember to sunblock your back as my husband got severe sunburn after snorkelling for hours, and the sunblock washing off!! I also recommend factor 50 for the first week if you are pale like me, even in the shade. I had factor 35 on, was in the shade, and still got very badly burnt legs , the wind on the beach can be deceptive and you dont realise you are burning. We saw a lot of bad sunburn throughout the hotel and on trips elsewhere, so be extra carfeul!!! We had a couple of insect bites, but that was from the night time on the beach or patio. Take plenty of sunblock as the hotel shops charge a lot, but wallmart in playa del carmen do sell it at normal price, plus there is a lot left in the thomson offices. TIP- if you need biodegradable sunscreen for a trip, dont get hawaian tropic eco, as it is not accepted at most eco parks. We got some from amazon, but check it is biodegradable, not just eco freindly.Wallmart have it at a good price too
ACTIVITIES/ENTERTAINMENT- Rubens is a legend!!! Towel folding, horse shoes, beach volley ball, any activity is fun with him. Jon and the whole activity team are wonderful though, not annoying or loud, they leave you alone if you dont want to join in, and work out who wants to do certain sports. My husband loved the volley ball. There is a kayak tour daily, again weather permitting, with an escort for safety. The evening stuff we experienced was good, but we were in bed by 10pm most nights, but people said the night time was as good as they day. There are also things like spanish lessons, yoga, teqilla tasting, and decorationg your own pottery, which we wished we had done. We did go to the mayan night mexican night and caribean night, all of which were fab.Our favourites were the mayan show and the mexican night with mexican games, so much fun!!! Even if you dont have the buffet on the beach, the mayan show is not to be missed.
FOOD- We went to every restaurant except the italian. Our favourite was the Vida Grill, but it will all be down to your personal taste which you prefer. We heard that Mia Casa the italian are the strictest with dress code, and it gets the busiest. We went early to dinner, before 6.30, as it gets busy after that time. A lot of people didnt like that you had to wait after that time, upto about 40mins sometimes, with a buzzer telling you when the table was ready. It was a bit frustrating having to think what time to finish at the beach so we could get ready for dinner by 6pm, as we didnt want to be going to eat at 8-9pm really. But, a lot of people said there were tables free at busy times, but not enough staff to attend them? This may have been due to short staff issues due to illness though. The food is quite rich, which loads of flavour, and if you have entre, soup, main, and pudding, you'll be full. For lunch we had beach bbq most days, and sandwichiere. The beach bbq was good, but watch your burgers from here, as some are quite pink in the middle i think to cater to american tastes. we took our food back to our beach bed, but you can sit in the open air, its fab. We had brekie there most days too, with wonderful smoothies, and sitting on the beach eating your cornflakes is lovely. Watch the birds too, stealing sugar, very entertaining! The sandwichiere was good for a sit down lunch, but still near the beach. We had brekkie at Arrecifes too, which is indoors, and has more choice than the outdoor breakfasts, and was also very good. The room service was very very good. We had two breakfasts very early due to trips out, and all came on time, and were hot. The evening food is good , lovely club sandwich and good puddings!! You do feel a bit guilty not going out for dinner, but it was good to do this after a long day trip, or just if you wanted a quiet night. All waiting staff worked very hard and were very polite and efficient, room service staff included!
Our consierges were great, always checking things were ok, thankyou Sylvia for sorting out our locked cases!!! The thomson and first choice reps worked very hard and were helpfull above and beyond. As i said before, there are lots of left items in the office from books to flips flops to sunblock and first aid things. We left loads of stuff to reduce our luggage weight, and anything they cant used goes to local charity.
TRIPS- We did Chitchen itza through thomson, which was fab. Ealry start but worth it. Luigi the guide is hilarious, and Eric was in charge of our refreshents of coffe, tea, pastries, and later beer! Chitchen itza is HOT HOT HOT!!! We got there at about 10.30 and by 12pm when we left i was fit to drop! Take the water and umbrella offered , and if you are feeling at all unwell before the tour, re book for another day. One poor man on our tour collapsed 10minutes in, and was attended to straight away by medical staff and taken away by ambulance, and Eric stayed with him. He rejoined us at the end, and had had the tummy bug so hadnt eaten much the previous day, and was dehydrated, so if you are not 100% reschedule the tour. It is amazing though.
We went to Playa Del carmen by collectivo, 70 pesos for two people one way. We caught it from the hotel side of the road, and it stops right in the front area of playa on 2nd Norte street. Going back, watch out for the road sign saying El Dorado Seaside above the road, and shout ALTO! as the driver cannot always remember everyones stop. The buses are safe and air conditioned. If you are coming back from Playa or anywhere else in the north at night i would recommend a taxi simply because you have to cross the highway to get to the hotel, and this is very dangerous!!!!
TIPS- If you smoke roll up tobacco take your own, as it is not commonly used in mexico, so is hard to find and very expensive. Take your own ciggies as the hotel ones are expensive. Also take antiseptic cream, and dressing and plasters of all sizes as we got a few grazes and blisters(our own falut).
TUMMY BUG- Our first week, we had no problems. By the wednsday of week two my husband had terrible diarreah, and stomach pains. Immodium helped, and lots of water, but it did return for a few days. We stayed in our room, but when i ventured out the next day i heard a lot of people were also suffering. No vomiting just terrible diarreah and tummy pains. Our neighbours had it for 5 days, some people just 1 or 2 days. The Thomson rep said it was an airborne bug common this time of year? Some staff also had it. I aquired it 3 days before we left and still have it now. It was not the food as far as i can tell as no vomiting. A few people had the doctor and a couple had IV fluids from what i heard. I was obsessed with hand hygiene, alco gel, and antiseptic wipes throughout my stay, especially when my husband got it, but i still got it. I would have liked the thomson rep to have re-iterated not to use the pools until you were 48 clear of any illness at the welcome meeting, as its in the welcome booklet only, and a lot of people who told me about their illness were still using the pools. I also think it is important for people who are going in the next few days to know there is a bug going around, as it could make people very unwell if they are pregnant or already have certain medical issues. So, take immodium, and be aware of good hand hygiene if you are going soon, and talk to your thomson agent here if you are worried..
I think it says a lot that despite the tummy bug, we had an amazing time, all due to the staff really.I hope they keep the resort small. No more building please!!! The hotel is very relaxing and picturesque and the mexican people are the friendliest i,ve met, so we'll be back !!! Any queries please feel free to contact me.
