“Lovely resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

Loved our stay here; big room w jacuzzi & big bathroom w two beds and fridge with drinks refreshed every day. Food v good and lots of choice. Lovely pools &'beach but sometimes a bit of a bunfight for the loungers! Smarter than we thought so take something nice for the evening restaurants. You can just get the buses to the beaches and playa del Carmen. If you are up for a laugh a night out at nightclub Coco Bongo is not to be missed - great show and worth paying the extra for a table. Room service is free too so you can get a burger at 2 am when you get home from Coco Bongo! Great holiday in lovely Mexico.

Just got back from our honeymoon. The place was a piece of paradise. The people were friendly 24/7 everywhere was clean. The food was spectacular and I would highly recommend to everyone for total value for money. Can't wait to go again :)

We arrived back in the UK today (12th July 2012) from our honeymoon at EL Dorado. Needless to say we had such a fantastic time, the hotel exceeded our expections. The staff were very friendly & always willing to help you enjoy your stay even further. We have not one complaint about the place.
We would recommend having the "standard" Junior suite, we stayed in one & it was the best room we have stayed in - ever ! We personally didnt see the benefit of the upgrade rooms as our room (1804) had an ocean view which was much a same to those upgrade Ocean View Rooms.
Some reviews we have noticed have been mentioning the food not being "Michelin star" standard. But it never advertised as that, being a Gourmet Inclusive resort, the food matched that standard. The food was wonderful, you will never go hungry.
The beach was not quite what Thompson Holidays show in brochure, but still you had options of being involved in the daytime activities. We spent more time on the beach beds further along the beach where it was very quiet - bliss. We were very much looked after by our bar waitress Alicia who kept us topped up with liquids! Also a special mention for barman Elmer who makes the best cocktails by far.
All in all, this was the best holiday we have ever done & if you are reading this & thinking of booking - do it now, you wont regret it.

Room Tip: Junior suites in our opinion were at a very high standard. Maybe save the money & treat yourself...

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

Flights - we flew with first choice from London Gatwick and had seen a few negative reviews for the company before our trip so were a little sceptical. However, although the aircraft was a little dated, it got us from A to B with no delays at all! The inflight meals were exactly as expected and included things such as chicken tikka masala, sausage and mash, BBQ chicken etc. with a side salad (cucumber, tomato, red pepper, sweetcorn) and bread with butter.

Airport Transfer - Again, had seen a lot of complaints about this service but EDSS is the first stop and there is someone on board to tell you everything you need to know about your hotel and Mexico in general (very useful). However, take heed because there will be lots of men trying to take your luggage to the bus in exchange for money! It is not a long walk at all to the coaches so unless your bag is heavy I wouldn't advise it.

Weather - I was worried because I had heard June/July was the beginning of the hurricane season but it didn't rain once the whole week we were there! The sun was shining and there were only one or two clouds in the sky each day :)

Welcome - On welcome, we received a glass of champagne and an ice cold towel as well as the lock to our safe and room keys. We were in room 2915 (a first floor ocean front room) and it was great! So much more spacious than the pictures had led me to believe so we were happy! On top of this, there was even a bottle of champagne waiting for us in our room as a welcome gift!

Food - Our favourite restaurant was Mia Casa and in specific, we loved the crème brûlée for dessert! The two times we went there, Alfonso was our waiter and we made sure to tip him each time since he was so kind and advised us on all the best dishes. We probably tipped him a total of 200 pesos/£10 in total. We also enjoyed Klay Talay and La Vida Garden Grill. The latter has a great salad bar for lunch and so we went there almost every day! My partner also loved La Carreta too (the Mexican restaurant). In each, there are nice little touches. For example, in Mia Casa (Italian) there was bread with a choice of tomato and garlic dip or a black olive dip as well as other small little appetisers such as cream cheese rolled in nuts. Make sure you adhere strictly to the dress code or you will get turned away (I saw at least two couples having to go back and change). The dress code for men involves collared/polo shirts and any type of bottoms that weren't board shorts. They were a little more lenient towards women, but even still the majority of us wore nice dresses and heels so bare this in mind! For breakfast, we enjoyed the continental buffet at the sandwicherie which hosted an array of pastries, fruit, cereals, fruit juices, pancakes, waffles, bacon, scrambled egg and even freshly made omelettes to your specification (mushroom, red pepper, courgette, cheese, ham and many many more options).

Room Service - All the staff were so polite and never lingered for a tip (having said this, we did tip them roughly 100 pesos/£5 each time because they truly did deserve it). When they arrive, they lay down the food and talk you through everything you've ordered to make sure it is all correct and that there is nothing missing. Then they ask politely that you leave the dishes outside of your suite for collection in an hour! Extremely hassle free!

Our Last Night - Whilst we were out at dinner, they filled the jacuzzi, placed some towel art on the bed of two swans, turned on some music and sprinkled rose petals all over the room! It was so thoughtful of them and really did make for a great ending to a great holiday.

Drinks - Enjoyed the classics such as mojitos and cosmopolitons as well as El Dorado's own creation, the mud slide, which was a sort of coffee liquor alcoholic drink! Also, an endless supply of soft drinks such as water, coke, sprite etc. The minibar is filled daily with anything you need so you can always come back to your room after a day in the sun to refresh yourself with a nice cold beer.

Beach - the beach is great and if you are up early enough, you see the staff removing the seaweed from the water. You only have to go down the coast a bit to realise what a great job they've actually done! There is a regular waitress service on the beach which we took full advantage of as we didn't want to waste a second of the week's worth of sun! You'll never struggle to find yourself a sun bed or lounger since there are so many! We preferred not to use the beds as a lot of them were too shaded for most of the day, but in the late afternoon/early evening they are just perfect to watch the sunset at around 7.30pm.

Water Sports - You HAVE to go snorkelling! We didn't go out with the tour but I'd definitely advise it as they probably know all the best places to go. Even so, we managed to see sting rays, catfish and loads of other smaller fish in much larger groups! Kayaking was also fun but could only entertain us for just under an hour. It was a nice alternative to lying on the beach to sunbathe though!

Complaints - Just the one! Whenever we went to borrow a snorkel or use the kayaks, the staff would ask if we'd booked a tour yet and ask where we'd booked it (this happened 3 or 4 times). We'd booked before we'd arrived and when our answer was 'online', they didn't seem very happy about it at all. However, on the day of the excursion, those of us who had booked online were in the official vehicle for the park and were issued wristbands whereas those who'd booked on site were in a smaller white van and were not! I am not saying there is a right or a wrong way to book, but I don't see why we should be made to feel awkward by staff for the method in which we reserved our tour.

Conclusion - You would be mad not to book a holiday here! It really was a fantastic holiday and I hope to return in the very near future :)

This review is a little late. We stayed here March 2012 for 2 weeks and came home very relaxed. We upgraded our room to a beach front suite but looking back it really wasn't worth it. We was also close to the main bar but that didn't disturb us if we got an early night.

Room was large, with all the ammienties and we had a balcony with a sea view if you managed to look around the palm trees. Also tried room service which was reasonable but quick.

This was our first time to a Gourmet all inclusive, and overall the experence generally good the only cristism was that the menus were the same both weeks. Our favourite was the mexican but on our 2nd visit we suffered from extremely bad service. We did complain about this and they sent us a bottle of champagne to our room (which niether of us drink) and to be honest we could of got from the bar. The evening entertainment consisted of shows and live music, some of the live bands were actually quite good. The bar staff worked extremely hard and you could have international brand drinks if you asked for them.

We never went round the pools as we prefer the beach but found it extremely rocky under foot and I did cut my foot. We ended up buying water shoes as it was also impossible to get into the water without them if you were at the further end of the beach. While we were there they was removing rocks and stones out of the sea, which seemed like an endless battle to me, also what is that doing to the sea life? We did go snorkelling and I did manage to see a small patch of live coral but most of it was dead. We never strugged to get a sun lounger or bed as we were prepared to walk up the beach a little further. The beach girls also worked hard serving you drinks.

Overall we had an extremely lazy holiday and came home chilled. Just what we wanted.

We have just returned from two weeks at EDSS and I do not know where to start in explaining how amazing this place really is! On arrival we were greeted by lovely staff who gave us a cool flannel, showed us to a spacious air conditioned room where we were given champagne and a small roll each. In this room we completed our forms for check in and then we were driven to our room. We stayed in room 3727 which was on the third floor. Our room was geat very spacious with two double beds and a jacuzzi as well as a tv, DVD player, dining Area, baloney with seating and a large bathroom with two sinks lots of mirrors, a hair dryer and a wet room/shower. From our balcony we overlooked the beautiful gardens and all day the beautiful birds sang. It is such a peaceful and relaxing hotel.
The staff are all so friendly and everyday all day they are tending the gardens and the beach to keep them clean and looking just amazing! The staff even clean all of the seaweed out of the sea which has been washed in overnight!!
The beach is fantastic and we never struggled to get a bed even when we got up late, everyday we had a four poster bed on the beach which offered us shade as well as two sun loungers. The hotel provides you with towels so no need to take your own and you can change these for clean ones daily either at the beach hut or with your personal concierge. Waiters walked the beach all day offering you drinks - you would never go thirsty!!
We enjoyed the beach BBQ which was available everyday for lunch but we also enjoyed the sandwicherie which offered fresh pizzas, salads, burgers and burritos.
The hotel offers 5 restaurants for dinner which were all very nice, the Asian was our favourite! Be aware that the dress code for men is collared shirts/ polo shirts, I saw people being asked to change if they went in an ordinary t-shirt. All of the restaurants offer you 4 courses although the food we ate was lovely the only thing we would of liked was a little more choice as neither of us eat fish there was not much left to choose! I think the hotel would benefit from one of their restaurants becoming a buffet so you can help yourself my partner is a very fussy eater and a buffet would of been much better for him. Although the waiters were happy to change or remove anything from the meal that you did not like.
I would like to mention the boys at the beach hut , Pablo and his collegue. We booked all of our excursions through these guys as they were much cheaper than Thomson and what they offered was better than Thomson too! These guys soon became our friends and greeted us by name daily, they go to visit all of the excursions that they sell so they can share first hand experience and they will do anything they can to help you - two really great guys! You can never get bored here as there are so many things to do and it is worth stepping out of your comfort zone if you are brave enough! I was very frightened to swim with the whale sharks as I do not like the deep sea! The boys at the beach hut constantly reassured me before I went and I did it - it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!
All in all EDSS is just amazing and you would be mad not to book a holiday here, we booked another holiday to EDSS the day we got back as we miss it already! We will be returning in December and are going to return in two years to get married.
How anybody can moan about this place I do not know - book it now and enjoy paradise!!

Room Tip: The normal suites are good enough no need to upgrade to the others unless you wa t a swim up pool bu...
