“El Dorado Seaside Suites - a special resort for romantics”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2011

This was our first visit to EDSS and I am sorry it took us so long to try this resort. Since we generally only go to the RM for 3-4 nights the distance from the airport was a big reason why we have not booked here previously but it was absolutely worth it.

We have stayed in many AI resorts in the Riviera Maya and EDSS is now our #1 choice for an adult only all inclusive resort in the RM - LeBlanc remains our favorite in the Cancun hotel zone.. It is not perfect but close enough for us and we hope to return next year and stay longer.

We had a beachfront room on the far end of the resort and loved the room and location. Room was romantic and well appointed with a large in room jacuzzi overlooking the terrace, a wonderful bed and large and modern bath. It was always quiet and we would book the exact same room category again.

We did not care for the automatic light in the toliet area that was motion controlled. It made middle of the bathroom visits disruptive to the sleeping partner.

The personal concierge huts are dotted throughout the property and provide information, fresh towels, sunscreen, reading materials, etc. We rarely had to go to the front desk, though when we did, there was never a wait.

Beach was nice enough with lots of beach beds. It is not a beach conducive to long walks but does have a nice swimming area with calm and pretty water. We spent most of our day time hours enjoying the beach and the water. Beach service was pretty slow and could stand to be improved. It was not unusual to wait 20 minutes for a drink and the ice would often be melted by the time it arrived. It was sporadic as well.

There was a good bit of bed saving going on at the beach and pools - seems a common problem these days. Many went unused for hours at a time. Once we had a gentleman at the quiet pool tell us he was "saving" a beach bed for a friend and we should not put our towels down - we ignored him and put our stuff down as this is a real pet peeve of mine, when people decide they own a bed or chair. There was no one there and nothing laid out on the bed. He said something a second time and then saw we were not going to budge so finally shut up. It is immature and inconsiderate guests who make it an issue but not really sure that the resort can do anything about it.

Food was good to excellent. The Sandwicherie was just ok and we found the beach grill to be the best spot for lunch. While there was the standard burger fare for those that enjoy it, we really enjoyed the fresh ceviche and local dishes offered there and it was nice to lunch under the shade of the trees.

We loved VIDA for breakfast and dinner. The food here was as good as any resort we have been to, as well as any non all inclusive restaurant in this area. Menu options were extensive, service was excellent and the restaurant manager, Jose, immediately made us feel like welcome guests. Kudos to Jose and his staff for delivering such a consistently positive experience.

We also enjoyed dinner at the Italian restaurant but VIDA was our absolute favorite.

One of the unique features of EDSS are the bars located in several of the restaurants, something we have rarely found at other properties and a wonderful concept I wish more AI restaurants would adopt. Instead of having to congregate near the hostess stand, we were able to relax at the bar before dinner and enjoy a drink, making the wait a pleasure.

The resort offers some top shelf (Johnny Walker Black, Chivas, Crown Royal) but we did miss a top shelf vodka offering so skipped our evening martini.

House wine was adequate and there is an ala carte wine list, with the standard high mark ups we have seen in resorts in this area.

We did not use room service and did not check out the shows or evening music.

We did not use the activity pool but saw people there having fun when we walked by.

The grounds really are spectacular at this resort with scattered bali beds and intimate nooks everywhere. We totally enjoyed walks to the main part of the resort from our room and every path was covered with a canape of trees. Beautiful!

Gym was adequate for the property.

We were happy to see a new spa being built as the current one is quite old and not well appointed. The new spa looks spectacular and is set to open this summer.

Staff were uniformly warm and gracious and we immediately felt at home at EDSS. It is obvious this is a well managed property and we found the experience throughout the resort to be very positive.

There was a large mix of couples of all ages and many Brits and Canadians when we visited.

I would suggest that the resort provide bottled water at the beach, pools and bars. It is one of the only resorts we have been to of this caliber that does not.

I also would like to see internet access included. They were laying fiber for wifi when we were there to provide in room access but will still be charging for it - at 15USD per day this is also not competitive for resorts of this caliber.

I was charged $4 for a brief local call so beware of expensive phone charges.

All in all, we loved the resort and had a great stay. It exceeded our expectations and we will definitely be returning.

I recommend EDSS to anyone seeking an intimate and romantic resort with a quiet and elegantly casual vibe.

We have just returned from Mexico where we had the most amazing honeymoon at El Dorado Seaside suites. We could not fault anything, the food was excellent as were the drinks. The staff were friendly and went out of their way to help you! The rooms were large, elegant and sparkling! The added bonus of a chilled bottle of fizz and a run jacuzzi bath whilst you waited for your luggage to be delivered were fantastic!!

Having just resturned from our two week honeymoon at EDSS, 'my husband and I' are still floating on cloud nine!! We travelled with Thompson and from leaving Manchester airport we have nothing to complaint about and can only praise everyone we came across for making our holiday such a special and memorable one.
On arriving at the very sleek and clean reception of the resort we were all greeted by the concierge with champagne and a briefing of the resort. From here we travelled by buggy to our room which was an 'ocean view suite'. Once inside this spacious and romantic 'home' there was a note from the resort managment congratulating us on our wedding with a bottle of chilled champagne, glasses and a full bubbled jacuzzi!! Wow what a way to start.
The resort is spotlessly clean, very well set out for couples with beach/ pool 4 poster beds, hammocks, sun beds, couples swings in all of the cocktail bar areas etc. The weather was incredible throughout our stay so full use of the pools and beach were made!! There is facilities to use kayaks and snorkells on beach which lets you seethe amzing sealife present. Yes there are 'sand banks' visible at the beach but you are informed of the reasons behind this throughout the resort - being for conservation purposes which the EDSS has to its credit we think!! All of the staff were amazing so friendly, helpful and really did make you feel very special with Tanya, Enrique and their team providing entertainment throughout the day and night if you wished to join in. Every other holiday maker we came across could only speak of positive things about their stay. The only bits of critisism we did hear was regarding noise levels with some guests, which was down to individuals, and the staff did appear do their best to resolve such situations. This didnt impact on us at all really.
The food being A La Carte was fresh and very tasty this was such a difference to the usual buffet styles experienced on other holidays. Our favourite was the Asian which had both sushi and thai cusine to choose from. The Tempora icecream is a must!!! All drinks from soft drinks, cocktails, spirits and beers were of 'named' varieties rather than local brands and you can really take full advantage of this if you so wish!!
We did do a couple of excersions to CoCo Bongos andte Dolphins. If travelling with Thompson to CoCo Bongos please be aware that the coach does leave the club at 1.30 whilst the show continues until 3am this was a shame as it is an amazing experience!!
Overall we had a fabulous time which will be remembered for all the right reasons.

We stayed at EDSS in the first two weeks in May overall we had a good holiday and the hotel is very nice.

The accommodation was lovely the room was a large suite with a fantastic bed and huge shower- my only complaint was that the hairdryer was very rusty and overheated when used fortunately I had taken one of my own. The room was kept very clean although some days it was cleaned quite late in the day .The fridge in the room was filled up with whatever you request. Couldn’t really sit on balcony as overshadowed by the trees and no sun also the chairs had bird poo on them so wouldn’t want to sit on them anyway.. The gardens were beautiful and so well kept.

The food and service in restaurants was excellent our favourites was the Vida Grill and Mia Casa and had some wonderful meals the least favourite was the Mexican we had 2 not very nice meals and a bad experience with a broken chair. We never had a problem getting a table and only ever waited 10 minutes for a table at the Mia Casa where they give you a buzzer. The staff were always very friendly and attentive. We never left a restaurant hungry the portion sizes were fine. Room service was very good except the fish and chips was fish and crisps, the club sandwiches were delicious. The lunch restaurant on the beach was OK but always had either seafood paella or seafood pasta for lunch on the days we went. My husband only really drinks beer and he hated the one on offer - it’s a shame they don’t do a selection. The white wine was OK it seemed to get better after the second or third glass for some reason, my favourite cocktail was a Kir Royale most of the others had too much sugar syrup and was too sweet. The service for drinks was excellent especially the beach service the girls on the beach work so hard.

The hotel entertainment was brilliant, the night shows were some of the best we experienced. We enjoyed the Mexican show, the casino night, the fire show and the reggae band the best. I had a massage and facial at the spa on the beach - it was wonderful, I think its best to wait to be approached on the beach by spa staff then negotiate a deal they do offers each day.

The pools were OK but hard to get a bed unless you got up at the crack of dawn to bag one, it was so annoying to see towels on beds until the afternoon until owner turned up. Our favourite was the lap pool - nice and quiet and near the nicest bar.The far end of the beach was fine you do need water shoes if you want to swim and snorkel, it is so shallow that I grazed my knee when snorkelling one day. They had about 11 weddings while we were there and the ones we saw looked fabulous, it was fascinating to sit on the beach and watch all the preparations.

We did a few trips but always used collectivos (cheap, easy to use and drivers very helpful) or taxis. We went to Tulum ruins (much cheaper than an organised trip) then spent the rest of the day at Tulum beach which was fabulous. We also went to Xcaret but for us getting the tickets valid from 4pm was the best option as it’s a bit like a zoo and I don’t like zoos, the show at night is absolutely brilliant - it was the best night of the holiday. We also enjoyed a day at Zplor. We went to Playa de Carmen one evening and had a meal, then spent a couple of hours at the Fusion bar on the beach which has lots of entertainment and very good.

This is a lovely hotel and we would recommend this hotel to any couples for a holiday.

This hotel truly does deserve its 5 star rating, from the moment we arrived we felt very special and looked after. The staff are very friendly and nothing is ever a hassle. Its a beautiful setting and the gardens and design of the complex is really lovely. You never get tired of that white sand and turquoise water!
My husband and I enjoyed the peace and quiet of this being an adults only location and really relaxed and recharged our batteries. The restaurants were very good and served quite fancy dishes. However the menus being the same for the 14 days did get a bit repetetive into the second week - so I would have liked a change over after 7 days.
The room service was brilliant too, especially after our long delayed flight on arrival we over slept for dinner the first evening so just ordered room service and a few Margaritas-excellent!
I worried a little beforehand that thisresort might be "too fancy" and I wouldnt like being looked after so much, but there was no problems and I relaxed from the first day there and never looked back.
There is something here for everyone, we are in our early 40s, but the age group there is very broad and is a really good mix. This place is for you if you want your days filled with interesting activities and entertainment at night - or you can just chill on a Cabana with a yummy "dirty Monkey" or "Mud Slide" cocktails to name a few of our favorites :-)
We used the spa and had a couples massage, which was fantastic, albeit quite pricey - but a great way to begin our holiday after a long flight. We also went to Chichen Itza by plane - a truly amazing experience, yes it wasn't cheap but so worth it - to also have your own tour guide for 2.5 hours was brilliant and so interesting - as opposed to a 3 hour trip there and 3 hour trip back on the bus.
We also went to Delphinus for a dolphin experience which was fab and I will treasure the memory for ever, but my only 2 negatives on this is it isnt cheap and then they expect to spend another fortune on photos at the end - I believe that they should lower the prices a bit and they would actually get more sales or include a free one snap with the package. I also felt our trainer was a bit snippy and rushed us through a bit.
Lastly I would have liked free Wifi in our room, but it wasnt the end of the world, but I believe a lot of guests would us that facility if it was included in the "package".

Just returned from this resort on 5/28 and we loved every minute of it! The food, service, landscaping, drinks, etc were all perfect. The resort has the most beauftiful landscaping that you could imagine. We originally were put in room 3528 which is an "oceanview", we could see a fraction of the ocean about a half mile away from the balcony. We asked to be moved to a beachfront, and the next day, we were moved to room 2901. This was much better. I would highly advise getting a room in the lower block numbers to be close to everything (beach, food, bars, etc). Otherwise, you have quite a walk to get to your room.
We said over and over that we couldn't figure out what the people with bad reviews on here were experiencing b/c this place is great. The beach isn't the best, but it isn't near bad enough to ruin your trip unless you are simply impossible to please. The free snorkeling that the resort offers is awesome as are the free nightly shows put on at the main bar area. We always said we never wanted to go to the same place twice, but this one will definately be the exception, we would return in a heartbeat. Please feel free to ask any questions, I'll help as best I can.

Room Tip: Lower number rooms are closer to everything!

I read these reviews for many months upon arriving at this resort. I felt prepared and knew what to expect going into it. The people that complain about the sandbags are just ridiculous, they are in the water where there isn't even a beach! No one spends there day in that area anyway. The beach area was great. The property was exquisite. The food was different but for the most part, spectacular. The staff was first class but did make unexpected visits to our room more often than I would have liked. I would recommend this resort to anyone and everyone. It is so relaxing and makes for a dream vacation away from the hustle and bustle of life. I went with my wife and 2 best friends and we all decided we would go check out a couple other countries for future vacations but have a feeling that we will always come back to El Dorado Seaside for many years to come!

Room Tip: Beachfront are BLD 22-31, ask for them
