“Quiet hotel in a great location, but beach was disappointing.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2009

We had a great stay at the Omni in Puerto Aventuras. The hotel is small, but excellently located with the ocean on one side and the marina/town on the other. Our room was on the top (third) floor on the marina side with a direct view of the shops and dolphin lagoon. The large balcony had a spa tub, hammock and plenty of room to sit and watch the dolphin shows. At night, some of the restaurants had live music, which we could hear but not really see from our balcony. They seemed to stop by 9 or 10PM though, so it wasn't loud music all night.

ROOM: Not huge, but large enough for two people to relax. Cool tile floors and a very large shower. It was kept spotlessly clean; they replaced the beach towels and provided a free liter of bottled water daily. We had a Sony widescreen plasma TV, but not very many channels in English. No HBO or premium channels, although they did have a DVD player and movie rentals at the front desk for a small fee. There was a mini-bar fridge, but it was not very cold and we could find no way to adjust the temperature. Stocked with typical drinks at typical hotel prices. Not enough room to store your own water bottle or other items in there, though. We had a king size bed with decent linens, but we found the mattress rather hard and uncomfortable. The shower had plenty of hot water, but the pressure was very low.

BEACH: The beach wasn't terrible, but it was a disappointment since our main vacation objective was to find a nice, large beach. It was rather small, not much sandy area and not enough seating in the shade. I imagine the beach was much more expansive before hurricane Wilma - what a shame. The water was warm and fairly calm most of the time. Walking out into the water you had to be very careful of rocks and uneven surface, plus a lot of seaweed. But if you navigated around that stuff, the water was quite nice. There weren't really that many people there, but since the seating was limited, it felt more crowded than we would like.

SERVICE: The service was overall excellent for such a small hotel. The main hostess at the front desk (whose name I don't recall) was especially friendly and helpful. Most of the staff speaks decent English, and my husband speaks a little Spanish, so we didn't really have many issues with communication. The hotel has room service from 7AM - 11PM, and they were fairly prompt with bringing our orders (usually within 15 minutes). Drink service at the pool and beach area was variable - sometimes it took the guys awhile to get back to us, but that's because they were busy with servicing a large area.

One thing that was not adequately explained to us during check-in was the "Magic Box" breakfast procedure. The check-in sheet just said we were allowed two free continental breakfasts between 7-11AM. The first day we waited awhile for it to show up, then went for a walk, thinking it would be there when we got back. Turns out you have to request your breakfast at the front desk the day before, then they will bring it at the time you request. We found the continental breakfast to be tasty, but not substantial enough (we LOVE breakfast on vacation). Better is to order off the menu at the restaurant or from room service, and they will apply the amount of the continental breakfast to your order, then just charge you for the difference. We did that almost every day and the cost was less than 50 pesos.

LOCATION: The location of the hotel right in the heart of the Puerto Aventuras marina was excellent. There is a convenience store, Internet cafe, restaurants, souvenir shops, and the Dolphin Discovery attraction just steps away from the hotel. You can also book tours and activities there. Guests at other PA hotels would have about a 10 minute walk to the restaurants.

The town is pretty laid back and mellow and shuts down early, so if you're looking for clubs and party nightlife or upscale shopping, this is not the place! But if you want a quiet vacation away from busloads of tourists and drunken college kids, you might try the Omni in PA.

We truly appreciate your recent comments regarding your stay at our Omni Puerto Aventuras Beach Resort. Our Associates are our most important asset and thank you for recognizing their efforts and please rest assured we will recognize them for the genuine Mexican hospitality they provided.
Our beach area at the resort will be undergoing an eco-friendly expansion, which will widen the current beach, giving the area a much more spacious feel and complement our jacuzzi beach bar and the surrounding areas.

This hotel should be # 1 in Puerto Aventuras. First of all I am not a travel agent or am getting paid to write this. Service was unbelievable. I was at the Omni for my Honeymoon from June 12 to the 18th. If you are looking for a small hotel, where you don't become a number, this is the place. This hotel is the hidden jewel of Puerto Aventuras. The small town feel of the surrounding marina is very romantic. You can choose to eat at several different restaurants all surrounding the Dolphin Eco park where you can watch them swim while enjoying dinner or lunch. The Hotels restaurant is 5 star. Look, I'm 6'1 285, I don't mess around when it comes to food. Believe me if it was bad, or just OK I would have told them. Try the nachos, for lunch. The surf and turf for dinner is a must. How about dinner ON the beach," The Romantic Dinner" your choice of menu, that you go over with the Chef for about 80 dollars for two. Trust me this is the place to be for you honeymoon or romantic get away. Thanks again ALEX, ALEX and SOL.

My wife and I just got back from our wedding at the Omni Puerto Aventuras Resort, and we couldn't have been more pleased.

I am from NYC and she is from Texas, and the Omni proved to be the perfect choice for both of our families. Authentic enough for the Texans and providing a level of service that impressed all of my New Yorker relatives. (my cousins went on to the Ritz Carlton in Cancun and said they preferred the Omni)

Emmanuelle Florin was our wedding coordinator and she did a FANTASTIC job. She is super creative and thrives on the challenges involved in planning beautiful events. They say your wedding day flies by, but i was so relaxed and confident in her skills that it was just another leisurely day in paradise. If you are planning a wedding in the Cancun/Rivieria Maya area, you should absolutely use Emmanuelle as your coordinator.

My wife worked with Sol Morales from the Omni for over a year planning all of our arrangements, and Sol did a great job. We were able to choose rooms for all of our guests, and when we arrived there was a beautiful flower arrangement and bottle of champagne in our room. Throughout the week she and the rest of the hotel staff were incredibly attentive and helpful. (Even tracking me down when i left too large of a tip at the swim-up bar). They helped us plan customized tours to the ruins, and secure last minute dinner reservations and transportation. When my wife's family felt the regular margarita was not up to their discerning standards, the bar staff was happy to make a "Margarita a la Baker".

Alejandro Escudero and Chef Miguel Cisneros from the Omni's restaurant gave us a beautiful wedding reception dinner. Alejandro's service was excellent, the atmosphere was perfect and he went out of his way to make our entire week's dining experiences special. Chef Miguel's menu was delicious. We had coconut shrimp to start followed by filet mignon and lobster tail. The mexican breakfasts are terrific as well, we ate there everyday.

Overall, we had an awesome time, we loved the small hotel experience. The hammocks & jacuzzis in every room are great. Puerto Aventuras is a beautiful, safe community with lots of activities and amenities. Like all of the Riviera Maya, the beach is not as wide as it once was. However, we hear it is going to be dredged later this year in hopes of restoration.

We will definitely be back.

P.S. Check out Taco Paco in the mini-mall by the main entrance to PA. Gigantic fresh fish tacos for 20 pesos, and a great salsa bar.

We recently returned from a wonderful and glorious two week Spring Break vacation at The Omni in Puerto Aventuras (just south of Playa del Carmen) and The Omni Cancun Hotel and Villas. The resorts were clean, the service was excellent, the food was great, the weather was perfect, and the staff was always very friendly and helpful.

We never once felt threatened by the drug war violence that is being televised by the American media. I firmly believe that the American government and the new administration is trying to scare us away from Mexico in order to get us to vacation here in the States and spend our money here to boost our ailing economy. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned about vacationing in the Mexican Riviera. The return on your investment is still an excellent value, and you will not be disappointed.

This "boutique resort" surpassed any expectations. The resort itself is beautiful. The area is quiet and quaint. The service and staff were exceptional.

My husband had a birthday while we were there. At my request, the staff set up a wonderful dinner on the beach with a special menu, terrific wine and a dedicated server for us. It was truly a meal to remember. Prior to that, however, there was a birthday cake and decorations waiting for us at breakfast. The breakfast was even more impressive because it was done without any prompting from us. The hotel staff took it upon
themselves to have a birthday breakfast for my husband...like very good freinds or family.

The only less than perfect part of our stay is that the beach is quite rocky so bring your water shoes.

One final note, we have traveled to Mexico many times and we felt just as safe on this trip as ever. Security was never an issue.

We were a party of four adults and two children, 10 and 7 years old. Everyone enjoyed hanging around the pool, snorkeling just off the hotel beach, walking across the street to the shops and restaurants. The kids loved swimming with the dolphins, also right across the street. It is a shame that the beach suffered from storm damage, but we heard there is a rehab project coming soon. Since the hotel is small, the beach never seemed crowded. Service was great - in the rooms and outside at the pool and beach. Another reason I would recommend the hotel is its location on the 307 Highway. We are not the types to just stay at the hotel all day, every day. So the location was convenient to Tulum, Xel-Ha, Playa del Carmen. Everyone on staff at the hotel took very good care of us.

We just returned from a wonderful week at the Omni with two other couples. We found the hotel perfect in every way except for the beach itself. We would have preferred a place with a larger, more expansive beach. Unlike the previous reviewer, who was there during Christmas vacation week, we did not have a problem with either the pool area or beach being overcrowded. Even with the day passes we were always able to get chairs in either area. We loved the small hotel experience with a large open lobby with a central bar. Fernando was a friendly accommodating bartender who went out of his way to make us comfortable. Sol , the Manager was also friendly and very helpful. The rooms were large and comfortable and the staff was always on top of keeping the room in top shape by servicing rooms twice a day. We loved the hammock and jaccuzzi on the balcony. Food in restaurant was quite good for breakfast and lunch although service was slow. Gorge took very good care of us. We enjoyed the convenience of the marina for casual dinners. Food was okay but not "fine dining". Our snorkeling friends loved that they could walk right into the water at the beach and have a good snorkeling experience. We rented cars so were able to go to other areas for day trips. We are very experienced and sophisticated travelers and really enjoyed our experience at Omni Puerto Adventures.
