“Wonderful stay in Ixtapa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

We stayed at teh Tesoro from February 18-25. Check in was simple, our room was ready at 3:00 pm. The bars and buffet were open most hours of the day. We found the staff excellent! The bartenders and waiters really appreciate a tip. Some people complain about the Mexican family's that visit on the weekends but they caused no trouble and were very respectful of the resort and the tourists from other countries. Ixtapa is a truely beautiful place. The economy in the area has been hurt since the cruise ships no longer dock here so the marketplace is a place to find great bargains and negotiate for the best deals. Have fun and remember your vacation is what you make of it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 3rd floor for the ocean view to see over the condos and trees.

We just got back from our 4th trip to Ixtapa. Usually we stay in our timeshare at the Pacifica, but this year we decided to rent a condo. We got to Ixtapa and because of a mix up, we had no place to stay. Thank goodness our taxi driver knew a person who could help us. He took us to a wonderful booking agent and before we knew it, he had found a spot for all 6 of us at the Tesoro. We actually rented a condo from an owner at the Tesoro. It was 3 good sized bedrooms, 2 balconys, a small kitchen and living room, and 2 bathrooms. It had a nice view of the ocean and it was neat and clean. There were a few amenities that we had to purchase (shampoo, conditioner, toothe paste......) but since this was a last minute thing, we didn't really mind. The lobby has a nice little bar and the restaurant was your typical mexican buffet. The Tesoro has a nice pool and the beach area was even better. One of the best things at the Tesoro is the staff of waiters, especially Carlos. He checked with us at least every 15 minutes and brought us whatever we asked for. One little tip, bring a mug for your drinks. They will stay colder and waiters don't have to make so many trips. The beach in Ixtapa is the best we have ever been to (and we have been all around Mexico). It has the nicest beach and the warmest water. The resort is only steps from downtown Ixtapa and all the night life. We went downtown every night and felt safe walking around all over. Kapados, Senior Frogs, and Franks are just some of the wonderful bars and there are more restaurants than I could count.
A couple of things we didn't really care for at the Tesoro....
1. The resort sells day passes to the locals. This means that chairs are hard to come by and there are a LOT of children there everyday. If you don't have chairs saved by 8 a.m., you wont get one.
2. There is no pool bar. Drinks are not allowed in the pool at all.
3. There is very little entertainment. They have Karoke for about an hour each night, but when it is over, the whole place clears out.
Over all, despite the mix up in our reservations, we had a wonderfull trip and will definately go back to Ixtapa.

Room Tip: Make sure to get a room about the 3rd floor if you plan on getting any sleep.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013 via mobile

I just returned from a week at Tesoro and couldn't find much to complain about. I have stayed in MANY all-inclusive resorts world wide over the years - Barcelos, Westins, Riu - Tesoro is not one of those however, I knew that when I booked and didn't have that expectation as its not what I paid for. However, if you're looking for a solid 3 star that's clean, friendly with a location that can't be beat, this is the place.
Rooms: They were small and basic but the beds were pillow top mattresses and probably one of the most comfortable I've ever had in Mexico. There was a small bar fridge they stocked daily with water and pop. A room safe (no charge). They seem to all face either the ocean or the golf course across the street - either is fine. Bathroom was basic with shower only. O air con issues. Everything was clean, never saw even the smallest bug - just nothing snazzy.
Food & Entertainment: Used the buffet or went out. never did bother booking the one Mexican restaurant not did we end up using the room service that u get once a day. those that did said it was fine. A decent variety, no tummy issues. Drinks were ok too - nothing fancy but covered the basics with no problems. They had a stage area with dancers and a few nights a week, did an open air buffet outside - it was great! the lobby bar had karaoke, dancing, usually something after ten.
Service: Check-in and out was easy and went smoothly. On our last day we got to keep our bracelets and stay well past check-out of noon as we had a later flight, no problem.
Location: The best! Beautiful beach, great for long walks. Lots of umbrellas on the beach, plus the bar staff come out there and serve drinks both at the beach and the pool. restaurants and shops were only a five min stroll away, with a well lit path and street - felt very safe even after dark. And, if you want to head into Zhihuatanejo (which I HIGHLY recommend, just beautiful - ended up going twice), it's about ten minutes drive and a five dollar cab ride.
As for the locals, yep you're in Mexico - there are Mexicans there! To read some of the reviews, you'd swear the cartels were visiting. Seriously, on weekends there were more locals - mostly families who I'm sure work hard all week and sometimes enjoy weekends away with their families just like we do. It was not a big deal and was actually refreshing not to be in a hotel full of only Americans and Canadians.

Will we recommend it to others? Only to those who understand it's a 3 star Mexican resort in Mexico, not a 5 star fancy-schmancy place.
We went last minute on a cheap deal and will be returning!

We stayed at the Tesoro January of 2012. This was the year of change for my wife and I. Check in was good, room was ready at 3:00 pm. We got there a little early, but the bars and buffet were open to us. We found the staff excellent! As I write in my other reviews, bring your own pool cups and some singles. The bartenders really appreciate a few bucks. Some people complain the Mexican family's around on the weekends. I found that we met some wonderful folks! If you want to be around all Americans go to Florida. Ixtapa and Z is a truely wonderful place. The magic is all around you, you just have to look. This is a good place if the price is right <1200.00 per person. Have fun and remember not to believe people that only have negitive things to write about. Your vacation is what you make of it.

Room Tip: Ask to upgraded later in the week. People we talked to had good luck. We're not in the room th...

We were at this resort Jan 6 - 13, 2013. We booked at the last minute through Air Canada vacations. We did not have high expectations, so were satified with the resort. We thought the resort would be less busy, assuming the children would be back at school. Not the case though - apparately the private schools in Mexico had the week off, so the hotel was about 90% Mexican families.

Room - Our room was on the 6th floor with an ocean view. The balcony was so narrow, a chair would not fit on it, but you could stand up and look out. The two double beds were comfortable and the room was spacious. There was a sofa bed in the room - it was not comfortable to sit on, so we didn't use it. The bathroom was okay. Small things such as the toilet roll holder was broden, the plug in the sink broken and the shower spray not too strong. None of these things bothered us, just an indication that the resort is getting a bit run down and not being maintained. The towels were large and nice. We tipped the maid every day. The first time she decorated the bathroom with flowers and left us 2 face cloths (rare in Mexico). There was a small bar fridge and 3 bottles of water and three can of pop were put in every day. (No beer). The air conditioning was very loud, but it worked okay. The main air conditioning compressor is outside, but the noise from it could be heard in our room even with the door closed. We were on the north side - try to avoid that side if possible.

Food - The buffet had a good variety every day. Always fresh fruit and fresh made egg dishes for breakfast. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights were theme nights and thefood and dining areas was set up outside in front of the stage. They did a lovely job of decorating and it was nice to sit outside; a lot less noisy than the dining room. There is one a la carte restaurant at the resort, but we didn't go there.

The pool was nice but deep 1.5 meters. I am short, so I had to go along the end or stand on my tip toes. There was a separate area for the children and one section for volleyball and games. Typically chairs were "reserved" with towels, but no one sitting there. If you didn't get there early you didn't get a chair. We went to the beach where there were nice palapas for shade. The sand was lovely and the beach area was large. It was quieter on the beach than by the pool.

Entertainment - There was a different theme every night with dancing and a bit of comedy (kind of lame sometimes). We went to the shows because there wasn't much else to do.They had Karaoke every night in the lobby, but we didn't go because it was all Spanish songs.

All in all Tesoro was okay for the price we paid. This was our first visit to Ixtapa and we enjoyed the safe, quiet environment. May go back, but will try a different resort.

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher up in the south tower with an ocean view.

Clean, spacious rooms with ocean views. Excellent for families with young kids especially locals. Go for upper floors. Excellent pillow top beds and a selection of nice pillows so we slept great -very unusual for Mexico. Great beach, ok pool, as is filled with kids, bar service at pool/beach bar ok, and service at buffet meals excellent. Food was great, albeit 24 hr snack bar is just a room with a hot dog rotisserie, some bread, and a pop machine that may or may not be turned on. Take along large plastic thermo glasses for your drinks and be prepared to try many as it took some time to get away from the koolaid taste of the mixes used and find the right one for you. I found the Long Island Ice tea to suit although it is not a drink I would have at home. The fries at the snack bar are delicious but ask for two orders so you can combine and fill a plate. Their burgers looked good and our friend's kids ate them and all aok. I don't think the locals who full up this resort tip generously and this affects the service and attitude overall. We tipped and it definitely had a positive affect.

Room Tip: Choose Upper floors for unobscured views.

We didnt pay much when we purchased this trip. It was an all inclusive trip with Air Canada Vacations. Welcome Drinks are free, pretty strong for my liking but not bad. We got to keep the souvenir necklace / ceramic mini mug. We upgraded to a Suite on the top floor for $50 for our whole stay. View from our Balcony was Breath taking, it is what you see on their Advertisement. We spent quite a bit of time in the balcony on early mornings and late night. Rooms can use more cleaning, I am very picky with Toilettes / Bath tubs etch. Their Bath Tub / Jacuzzi has a couple of ants walking around it. Which made me feel icky. There is no visible dirt in the room, beddings is not the Best, Bed was OK, not that comfty. AC barely works. There was a TV in the room and a mini fridge. The Food was not the best. They do not serve you the type of food that you would get in a Nice Hotel such as Barcelo. It's mostly authentic mexican dishes, which is ok but I feel that they should have more variety. I am glad we did not have our son with us on this trip because I do not think he would eat most of the food in the buffet ( and my son is not picky at all). Lots of Beans on the Buffet Table. Dining Room is Crowded, A La Carte is also not the Best. If you are just looking to go away on beach vacation and does not want to spend much, this is the place to be. Staff is Friendly ( but about 70% does not speak english ). I would spend the extra $200 / person to stay in a nicer hotel. bath room in the lobby is extremely hot and almost have no space to move around. There are plenty of locals roaming around, not a place for honeymooners. Tons of Kids. Pool is not the best.
