“Wonderful Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2009

What value! The service was top notch. Eventhough this was an all-inclusive hotel, the staff was friendly and eager to please. We love Ixtapa as this was my 6th time there and 5th time for my husband. We like the small feel of Ixtapa and the real Mexico of Zihuatenejo. This year my niece and great niece (15 yrs) went with us. My great niece got bored, missed her friends and her cell phone. Since it's not quite Spring break, there were no children her age.

Only downside was that February 2 was a National Holiday, so on Friday the 30th the hotel filled up with families with lots of young children.

Again, we can't say enough about the staff. The property was clean and the food and drinks were excellent. I think people do get sick because they drink too much, eat too many rich foods, and get too much sun! It is not a fancy hotel, but then again we didn't travel to 90 weather to stay in our room!

Ok... it is now time for us to post our review.
My wife and I stayed at the Park Royal Ixtapa from Jan 24th to the 31st 2009. All we can say right now is..... W O W !

We arrived at the Zihua Airport and found our bus to the resort almost immediately. One thing is...don't be fooled by the timeshare guys who make it sound like they have your ride awaiting. It's a gimmick that almost fooled my wife.

The bus ride was quick (25 minutes) with awesome scenery of local housing and a glimpse of the city of Zihuatanejo.

Once at the hotel, the bellboys were right there waiting to take care of our luggage while you checked in (and check was amazingly fast) while we sipped on a cocktail handed to us during the process. Our room wasn't ready until 4pm (we checked in at 1:00pm) but they eagerly gave us a wristband and told us to enjoy the resort while we waited. So off to the beach we went and had a drink while exploring the grounds.

Once we got to our room, both our jaws dropped at the beautiful scenery through the balcony doors. The room itself was immaculate, beautiful and exceptionally clean. I tipped the bellboy Orlando (Oso) who had a contagious smile on his face and who seemed he couldn't be happier with his job. Every morning we left a $2.00 tip on the pillow for the maid and every day when we returned to the room to shower or change, we were greeted with gorgous floral arrangments on our bed. What pride these people take in their work to make us travellers feel welcome . The floor was swept and mopped clean and you would never find any sand to step on from the previous day....and the room always smelled fresh and clean.

The pool area and the beach: The pool was large and clean, and you never had a problem finding a lounger at either. Antonio and Efrain at the pool bar were eager to serve and always happy. They were more then happy to ask you if you wanted another...and sometimes before the first one was done. On the beach, the ocean was within a few steps away with soft tan sand. This sand does get hot though..it's not the white powdery coral sands of the Dominican, but much softer and cooler then the sands of Manzanillo Mexico which is only 300 miles to the north. Everything by the beach and pool was pain stakenly cleaned and arranged by the staff...it was numbing to watch them make your stay so memorable.

The buffet had great selection which was changed everyday with very tasty food. The al la carte Italian restaurant (which we ate at twice) also had amazing food, but with a lesser selection on the menu..of course. Lunch can be eaten at either the Pescador restaurant with a beautiful menu of food platters or... you can have an afternoon bite at the snack bar which consisted of hamburgers, pizza, hotdogs or nachos. We never had one issue of stomach problems, nor seen anyone with food related problems. Keep in mind, and most people don't know it yet.. easy on the Pina Coladas and milky drinks and the combination of heat. Thats where most of the illnesses come from at any resort, and people are too hasty to blame it on the food.

In the evenings from 7pm to 8:30pm there are 3 guys who come to the lobby and play some music on their bongos/drums & keyboard and sing some local Mexican as well as American tunes for you. One evening we enjoyed the karaoke. Although there are no stage shows, you can usually find something to do, or people to talk to. If you just want to relax after supper, check out the chill-out lounge situated between the pool and beach. Very very relaxing, and a great place to dance and have some drinks. We met some great Canadian and American people there.

A must do is to run to the city of Zihuatanejo via bus (7 pesos) or taxi it there for 50 pesos and experience the Mexcian local life while shopping, having a meal and/or drinks. It will be a trip to remember. Shop for souveniers while there, you are bound to find something you will want to take home.

One tour we did was the bus tour combo which was a trip to a brick factory (where the make bricks by hand outside), a fruit plantation (we learned alot oabout coconuts) a visit to a Large & beautiful church in Petatland and then enjoyed a fresh grilled fish by the lagon where the salt water and fresh waters meet. Excellent way to see the country side. We were also told that we would likely experience a tremor or earthquake during our stay.. we laughed it off until...........one morning sitting on our loungers having our morning coffee..our chairs began to sway back and forth. We both looked back to see who was moving our chairs to only realize that it was an earthquake (4.9 on the richtor scale). I thought it was cool/amazing and my wife was really freaked out about it. Something we will never forget.

I could go on and on, but this is already getting to long. If anyone has any questions they would like to know that we haven't stated here, please feel free to e-mail us and we will be more then happy to answer your question.

And on that note, and on closing, this trip has likely been the most enjoyable, relaxing stay with the most amazing service we have been to from our 4 trips throughout Mexico and the Dominican Republic. We highly recommend it.

(Pictures to be attached soon).

This was our first visit to Ixtapa and a Park Royal resort. We stayed with 2 other couples who had been at other 'All inclusives' in Mexico and we all came away favourably impressed. The beach is awesome and by far the best we've seen in Mexico....flat and easy to walk on, warm water and a surf, that despite the red flag was safe to swim in. The second week of our stay however (the flag didn't change) the surf was too high and the waves too dangerous to risk swimming in.
As far as the resort itself, on the plus side, the food was great. Good variety and good quality. Some things (like toast, bacon or french fries) were nowhere to be seen, but if you asked, you got them. The staff were great. Friendly and very efficient. Jose Luis, one of the head waiters was especially friendly and helpful.
The rooms were good and all had great views, particularly from the 14th floor up. (there are no floors below 9).
The only a la carte restaurant (Italian) was good, although some of the entrees were sub standard. The soups and salads were very good. The dress code was hap hazard. We were told that men had to wear long pants and shirts. No problem, but they didn't tell us that sandals for men were forboten. The men in our party were dressed well but were denied entry becuse our toes were exposed (horrors!) At the same time a young man with a long soiled T-shirt down to his knees, baggy jeans and old runners was welcomed in. They sould be more consistent.
While we were there, the management was painting various areas of the pool deck. Trouble was that when it got wet, it became very slippery. 2 members of our party had bad falls (one was a concussion and temporary loss of consciousness). There were other falls involving broken limbs as well.
Only other minor gripe was the lack of any night time stage show entertainment. We looked forward to that in the other places we stayed in. The band in the bar was good but only played until 830.
All in all I still rate this resort as 3 1/2 to 4 stars. Would I go back? Definitely.

My husband and I stayed at the Park Royal from January 4 to 11, 2009. We went with 2 other couples. This was my third trip to Ixtapa and my husband's second time in Ixtapa, but this was our first time at the Park Royal. We have been to a few other beach areas in Mexico, and Ixtapa is still our favorite. The air and water temperatures are warm in Ixtapa and the people are friendly. It seems like a very safe and much less commercialized area than other places in Mexico where we have traveled. Park Royal is the most fun and relaxing resort we have ever visited. The food was very good for an all-inclusive. The service was wonderful. The Italian Restaurant was excellent. The drinks were also very good with plenty of quality alcohol. The rooms were kept very clean and the organized activities at the resort were great. The activity directors were lots of fun and made it more fun for everyone else. Some of the activities included water volleyball and beach volleyball and water aerobics. The location was also great with beautiful views of the beach and beautiful sunsets from the balcony and walking distance to Ixtapa. There were always plenty of chairs available around the pool and beach. We went on the Picante sunset cruise and on a fishing trip on the Elva II and I highly recommend both. If you like snorkeling, we recommend taking the $3.00 round trip boat ride to Las Gatos from the Zihuatanejo Marina where the water is calm and shallow. I also highly recommend Frank's Grill and Bar to watch sports on TV and listen to a great classic rock/blues band in their open courtyard on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. They also have food cooked in a wood fire adobe grill that looked very good, but we didn't try it since we were still full from the food at the resort. The only bad thing I can say about the resort is they would only give you 2 bottles of water per day in your room (for brushing your teeth). In this warm climate, we need several bottles of water each day to drink as well and went to the store across the street for bottles of water each day (or there are vending machines at the resort with bottles of water). This resort is older but very well maintained. There are lots of families that stay at this resort, but it was still very relaxing because it did not seem overly crowded. We would definitely recommend this resort. You might be disappointed if you are expecting luxury and room service and seclusion. But if you want a comfortable, clean, relaxing yet lively resort, you will enjoy this place. We can't wait to go back to Ixtapa, and this would be our first choice of places to stay.

My wife and I spent our 2nd week in Ixtapa at this resort, and we loved it! There were a couple of minor negatives, which I'll detail later, but all in all this is a fabulous place to stay.

Everything is nice and close - all the restaurants, bars, pool and snack bar. We were really able to relax here and not have to walk 1/2 a mile to do it...only to find there were no beach chairs available. Not here. There were more than enough chairs at any given time on any day.

We found the food and the service here to be excellent. We ate out of the resort (in Zihuatanejo a couple of times, and once in Ixtapa), but it had nothing to do with the quality of the food at Park Royal. We were allowed to eat in the a la carte Italian restaurent as often as we wanted (for dinner and with a reservation) but only ended up eating there once, on our last night...and it was excellent as well. The buffet breakfasts and lunches (and even the snack bar) had very good food.

I've never seen staff cleaning and maintaining as much as they do here. The place is kept immaculate.

One very unique thing I have to mention about Park Royal is their "Chill Out Lounge". I've never seen anything like it. It's a bar, right on the beach, that's open until 2:00am and the inside perimeter of the place is furnished with king size beds...for guests to chill out on. It's awesome. People lounging, people dancing, people leaning on the railing watching the lights of Ixtapa and the waves rolling in. Very nice touch.

The location of this resort is very good. The beach and sunsets are unbelievable. It's only a 5 minute walk to the shopping/restaurant section of Ixtapa, and if you want to go to Zihua, cabs and buses are available constantly.

The things that we didn't like here are pretty minor, but this is an honest review and I have to mention them.

We found the hallways out side of the rooms to be very loud. I was woken up on numerous occasions from slamming doors and people talking in the hallway.

There are no fridges in the rooms (at least there wasn't one in ours).

The pool always had garbage floating around in it. It wasn't disgusting or anything, but as much cleaning as they do around here, I was very surprised that they didn't have someone with a net periodically going around scooping up the garbage.

The last negative thing is the Royal Holiday sales people. They have a desk right at the only elevator and are constantly harassing people. They won't take "no" for an answer until you sit down with them and hear their pitch. Our meeting lasted all of 10 minutes before I made it very clear that we were not interested. I'm sure what they're offering would be appealing to some people. Once we had our meeting (on our 2nd day there) we were not bothered for the rest of the week.

Regardless of the few negative aspects we experienced here, we would definitely stay here again. The positives far out weighed the negatives.

  • Disliked — loud hallways, sales people

You will be diving into Timeshare Shark infested waters. Park Royal is notorious for kidnapping tourists under the guise of free meals, etc and whisking them away to strong arm sell a timeshare. Well if you stay here - you are there. They will hound you during the whole stay to buy a timeshare. They are seated outside the elevator, at the hotel entrance, around the hotel, in the lobby just waiting to pounce on you time after time to buy a timeshare.

It creates unnecessary stress for you your holiday vacation.

The hotel is nice, the food is good, the ocean is fun.

But who needs to be constantly pressured to buy a timeshare?

I talked with Park Royal timeshare owners there and they said the timeshare management is a mess. You cannot reach anyone on the phone. When you do pay your annual fee, they keep hounding you during the year to pay it - yes, their record keeping is that bad.

I would avoid Park Royal properties like the plague.
