“A great hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2009

We had the pleasure of spending one week at the Dorado Pacifico at the end of November, for me it was a return visit after an absence of 25 years! I loved it then when it was almost new and loved it just as much this time despite the fact the hotel shows signs of aging. However, it is being updated gradually. The exterior has been repainted and the room we were given was great. The food in the 3 restaurants is wonderful and the service from every area of the hotel is outstanding. It is located in the middle of a wonderful stretch of beach which was safe for swimming when we were there, at times it can be too rough. Righ across the street is a quaint area full of good restaurants and shops. The local bus in front of the hotel will take you anywhere for less than a dollar from the Marina to Zihuatanejo.
So if you are looking for an American style hotel with all the bells and whistles, this is not for you. But if you want a smaller hotel with charm and the warm, Mexican hospitality, you will enjoy the Dorado Pacifico.

We just returned from a week in Ixtapa at the Dorado Pacifico. The hotel is located in a great location across from the main plaza of Ixtapa, so there are many choices for food, drinks, shopping, etc. The people working at the hotel are great and very helpful. The biggest problem with the place is that it is in big need of some serious renovations. The rooms are nice size, but are showing their age. We had two connecting rooms, and in each the drapes had holes in them (some of which were covered with duct tape), there were tiles missing/crakced in the bathrooms, the chairs on the balcony were missing straps, etc, etc. Also, the pool could use a total renovation as well. I get the feeling this may be how the resorts are in Ixtapa, as we stayed at the Presidente a few years ago and noticed the same type of stuff, and people we met who stayed at the Krystal had similar comments. Would I go back again...probably, since the cost is reasonable, the people are great, the location is perfect. Just know what to expect.

The Dorado in Ixtapa is a wondeful hotel. I booked it through Apple Vacations and was completely satisfied with the entire stay. The staff was wondeful and very attentive to all of our needs during our stay. Raul Jimenez, customer service, was very helpful during our stay. He answered all of our questions and ensured that we had a pleasant stay. The other Raul behind the front desk was also great. I just can't say enough good things about our stay at this hotel. It's centrally located and waliking distance to everything. If you wanted to visit the fishing town of Zihuatanejo the taxi ride was about 50-80 pesos and a couple of minutes away. The Taxi prices are listed in the lobby and the Taxi drivers were very honest and charged the posted prices. We had a Jr Suite on the 11th floor with the most breathtaking sunsets every evening. No problems finding pool chairs or beach chairs on a daily basis. No need for All inclusive since, we were right across the street from the shopping and restaurant area. We booked through Apple vacations and recieved a $15 per day credit on food and beverages purchased in the hotel. Another plus for Apple vacations customer is that the Apple Vacations Office in Ixtapa is located right in the hotel. We also met with our wonderful Rep Roberto amost on a daily basis for tour info. This was our honeymoon and we were very happy with the hotel, location and especially the staff. The General manager sent us a complimentary Cake to the room which was delicious. We plan on going back to this hotel next time in Ixtapa.
They also have free wireless in several areas of the hotel or you can go acroos the street to one of the internet Cafes.
One drawback was the lack of fitness room, but we ran on the beach several times in the morning. They also have a massage therapist on staff and a Manicurists/pedicurists but no full Spa. The checkout process was easy and the bill was very accurate.

I actually ended up here for a night because I was :involuntarily bumped" from my Continental flight to Houston from Ixapa. I had been staying with my boyfriend and family at La Casa Que Canta in Ziguatenejo, which is out of control gorgeous.

Comparatively, this place is ridiculously cheesy. It looks like the kind of place where Jack, Janet and Chrissy from Three's Company would spend their vacation.

It was extremely dated and the food was terrible but the views were amazing and the pools were pretty nice. That said, it was super hokey and almost Disneyland-ish. If you want to go to a big resort, what's the point of even leaving the country?

Also, my computer was infested with sand fleas when I opened it up in the morning. I think they like the warmth of the hard drive or something. Pretty horrifying.

This hotel is located right smack in the middle of all the action. The Dorado is walking distance to all the local shops, bars, cafes, and dance spots Ixtapa has to offer. All the rooms are ocean view so I did not have to pay an additional charge to have a wonderful view. The hotel is a bit dated, but improvements were taking place during our stay and some of the finished updates we did get to see looked great. The front desk staff were very courteous and helpful during our entire stay. The activities personnel were also great, they knew how to motivate guest and get them to join the fun. The hotel organizes fun activities during the day for all ages, I had a great time playing beach volleyball with the other guest, thanks to the hotel activities personnel. They have a great kids play area where my son spent lots of time jumping, running and just having a blast. Our stay was truly fun and enjoyable, so our next trip to Ixtapa, the Dorado will be our home away from home once again.

  • Liked — Fun activities and staff.
  • Disliked — Mmain restaurant was closed for remodeling.

I've been going to the Dorado Pacifico for the last ten years, missed last year, but I wll be there this year. We are always treated like family and find everything there the way you would expect it in Mexico. Those of you that write a bad review because things aren't "Posh" enough for you need to stay in the States where you are "happy"!!! It's people like you that have ruined the best parts of Mexico by making them become so Americanized, NO!! I am not Mexican but I love to go where I always feel welcome. Sure the hotel is old, but the pool is great, never have had a problem getting a lounge chair, the people are wonderful, the scenery cannot be beat, the food & drinks are great, so if you don't like all this, stay home!! The good outweighs the bad by 100%.

Up until our last night this hotel would recieve an above average review. Let me start with the positives. For the price this hotel is very clean, has a great location, great pool for children and adults (swim-up bar is a plus.) You can walk out on to the beach which is kept very clean, the waves were too big for swimming for my kids but we still got a lot of sand time. My family, which is my husband and I and our two children ages 8 and 6, have traveled all over Mexico and have experienced every style of accomodation. We have also experienced every style of customer service and interaction with the mexican style service. Nothing is new or scary to us. That being said....half way through our trip when we returned home from dinner our safe was open. We chalked it up to us being irresponsible (though it's very unlike us) and didn't think much of it. After that we were very careful to lock the safe every time, each of us reminding the other. Our last night we came back from dinner to find our safe wide open after we were absolutely sure it was shut when we left. The hotel's answer was that we had cell phones in our safe and that they could open the safe (!) As my husband was trying to talk to the very nice guy at the front desk about the situation the manager yelled in spanish to him to stop wasting time with us, that we weren't worth the time we were wasting. Pity we both heard (us being fluent spanish speaking) that and were so offended by their poor customer service that we will never stay there again. They never offered any compensation (nor did we ask as we didn't really care) we had to close all our credit cards even though we were there for another week at another hotel. They still maintained that our cell phones kept in the safe was magically opening our safe instead of trying to find out who might be opening our safe. In our 20 years of traveling Mexico I have never experienced this and it was a huge bummer!
