“Pleasant and Clean Vacation Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013 via mobile

The word that most comes to my mind when thinking back on my experience at Azul Ixtapa is clean. The staff does a wonderful job of keeping the resort very clean. Housekeeping did an amazing job! Each day they would design fresh, tropical flowers on the bed and in the bathroom. Such a nice touch! The resort is very family friendly, perhaps too much so for a couple with no kids. Kids are everywhere! The all inclusive price is cheap compared to other places that we have traveled. The result is not very much variety and lots of Mexican buffets, but it also gives you the opportunity to get out and explore the tastes of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo! I suggest Villa del Selva in Ixtapa. Wonderful meal and ambience, especially at sunset! With the all inclusive plan you are limited to only three specialty dinners for a one week stay at the resort (something that was not publicized until we arrived at the resort). There are only two choices, a Mediterranean themed restaurant, which was okay, and a waterfront seafood restaurant, which was pretty good. Again, the all inclusive is cheap, so no big deal to go out and grab some tacos on the beach! The timeshare salesmen are not too pushy, but that was a downside to my experience. We already own timeshare so we were not interested in their program, but our guy, Bill, had been so helpful and nice that we agreed to listen to the presentation as a favor for him. He had to have known we were not going to purchase anything. Luckily we did this on our last day, because as we were leaving the resort our friendly Bill was suddenly very rude and unpleasant. Not enough to leave an unpleasant taste, but had this happened earlier in the week, it would have made for an awkward and uneasy resort experience.

My friend and I stayed here for 10 days, the service was excellent, even with the language barrier. The beach was clean and grounds well maintained. The pools were not crowded, you could swim up to the bar at one of the pools. We ferried across to the island for 40 pesos round trip and snorkeled. I cannot swim, so I used a guide with a boogy board for 30 pesos. I cannot say enough about this place, and we will both definitely go back.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

Both myself and my wife stayed at this resort from Feb. 16th to Feb. 23rd. We really enjoyed our stay. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Our room was not in the main building, but in an adjacent building on the 9th floor with a great view of the resort, beach and ocean. Good size balcony with two chairs. The room was very spacious with an extra large king size bed. Nice bathroom with tub and shower. The houskeeping staff did a VERY good job. Everything was very clean. The resort is very spacious with two big pools, one lower and one upper. You will have to walk around these pools to get to the beach. Plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas. I think they should consider placing some chairs around the pool areas to accomodate people who would rather sit than recline. Very good drink service around the pools, but none on the beach. Bars were easily reached in the pool areas. The restaurants were good to very good. I would suggest going to the Oyster Bar restaurant and the Costa Azul resturants for you reservation dinners. Costa Azul is currently being refurbished. We went to the Oyster Bar twice and found the food to be very good, and so was the wine. Fabiano and Thomas gave us great service. We found the buffets to be very tasty, but I would like to see more desserts made available. We ate most of our breakfasts at Colores with a terrace that sits on the ocean. Great coffee and the food was very good with a nice selection. Service was excellent. Great entertainment, which was very professional. Have a drink at sunset in the El Palmar lobby bar. Be sure to get a tiquela with an sangrita chaser. Carlos was a very good and helpful waiter. Walk along the beach past the peer into Playa Linda. Beautiful beach with no one on the beach except weekends. The tiny shops make for good tourist shopping. Local bus ride into Ixtapa (10 minutes) is nine pesos, into Zihuatanejo (25 minutes) is ten pesos. A peso is less than a US dollar. Be sure to get on the bus that says Playa Linda, Ixtapa, Zihau. In Zihau tell the bus driver to let you off on Ave Cinco de Mayo and walk down to the bay. You can catch the return bus on the opposit corner. Many shops along Cinco de Mayo and in the bay district. We did notice more people at this resort on the weekends, with families. Everyone was friendly. We would return.

Couldn't have had a better experience. Room was great, service was outstanding, drinks were excellent, and food was good (especially in the ala carte venues.. There were lots of kids, but this did not bother my wife and I. Above all, the weather in Ixtapa is the best in Mexico; everyday was sunny and 87. The only drawback is the beach area where it is a bit rocky and the sand is dark.

Room Tip: Higher floors have the best views. A kayak trip to Ixtapa Island was fun.

I am happy to write a report on our stay at the Azul, it was just the most wonderful time away my husband and I have ever had.
We are a family of four with young kids ages 4 and 6, this is our sixth time to the area yet our first to this resort and we will most certainly be back. The Azul staff go above and beyond to make your stay the best it can be, we stayed 14 days and every day was as good or better than the last.
We stayed in a Deluxe Ocean View room which I feel was most likely the hotels basic room, it was more than sufficient considering that we were barely there. The beds were terrific and the maid staff did an excellent job cleaning up and leaving fresh flowers etc... daily. The food never dissapointed us...ever! It was always fresh and if there was something that we wanted but didn't see available all we had to do was ask and it was brought to us with a smile. Thank you to Carlos in the Colours resteraunt for always starting our day with a smile and the best service. If you have small children you will be pleased to know that the staff at the Azul make it there full time job to accommodate your children. No matter what the catastrophe they always smile and say "no problem!" Even in the resorts fine dining restaurants children are welcome and catered to. The resort grounds were spotless and I never went into a bathroom that was less than impeccable. As for the recreation staff...we loved them. Thank you especially to Sergio for making my kids experience so memorable. I must also mention the two Tony's for being so great to my family. We took advantage of the kids club many times and we felt very comfortable leaving our kids in there capable hands. For those of you concerned about overall safety let me assure you that you have no reason to worry and that they take many measures to ensure your families safety from security guards to carefully guarded swimming pools. My husband and I both used the gym facilities daily, it is in the heart of the resort and you were able to take part in whatever activity you choose without feeling like your tucked away in the back forty of the hotel. The evening entertainment was really great, we enjoyed all the shows and it was a wonderful way to end the day. The "Lobby Bar" was a great way to get your last laugh in before bed and a great meeting place before or after dinner and the show, they had live music every night and Jose and his staff at the bar were attentive to your every need.
I cannot say enough really about the job they do here at the Azul and all I am left to say is thank you so much for giving us such an extraordinary experience!

The resort was really beautiful, and the service was impeccable! Well, except for the front desk, which I'll get into later. We were supposed to have 2 beds and a balcony, when we got to our room, there was no balcony (we are smokers and so needed this because smoking isn't allowed in rooms.) Zenon, our bell boy, got on the phone, and within a minute said "follow me" and we went to another room (his key didn't work, so within 2 minutes he went to the desk, got us new keys, and had us in the room.) The room was great, beautiful view of Ixtapa Island and the bay, the pools are multi-level with waterfalls going to lower levels, and the kids pool is incredible! Lots of things for kids to do here, great family resort! The buffets were good, basic buffet food, but my husband loved the oriental night (fresh sushi) and the italian night was pretty good, too. Breakfast also had omelet and tortilla stations, and many varieties of fresh juice. We did not eat at the Costa Azul (mediterranean) but did eat at the Oyster Bar out on the point (bring a sweater, the wind can get a little chilly!) Great shrimp, shrimp, and more shrimp! The surf and turf was pretty good, and the desserts were wonderful! The beach is NOT white sand, so if you can't live without that, this is not the resort for you. The coastline is very rocky with many mountains in the background, so there is just a small swimming area on the beach, and the water is usually pretty sandy from the waves, no not real clear. Walk down the beach past the pier to th public beach if you want white sand (about 1 mile, nice, easy walk) and there are some great little beach bars (La Palapa, see Santos and Susanna, they have a boat in Zihua that they will take you out on snorkel or fishing trips - absolutely fantastic and they do whatever YOU want, no tour schedule to follow! We went to Los Gatos, Playa Manzanillo - beautiful coral with caves and canyons, colorful fish and stingrays - and Ixtapa Island, good snorkeling, beach bars, and deer paths up the cliffs to get incredible views down to the water!) Wonderful trip, we saw (from the boat) dolphins, fin whales and a huge sea turtle, and lots of schools of mahi-mahi, along with a breathtaking coastline and beautiful rocky islands out in the sea.
The lobby bar has music every night - Filiberto (Berto,) Carlos and Jose Rosas are incredible...get to know them, you won't be sorry! We had a great time here almost every night after dinner. The shows were mostly dancing - good dance troupe, if you are into that, and they start early and end by 10pm every night. Disco was not open while we were there, it was a pretty slow week, but gets very busy with families from Mexico City on the weekends (beautiful, well behaved children!) All in all, I would compare the service we received from Jose, Zenon, Berto and Carlos (along with any others in the buffet restaurants) to rival Ritz Carlton - seriously! The front desk people were pleasant enough, but not very helpful any time we went there...go to the bell men, they are more than willing to help. This resort does not take American dollars at any shop, nor will they exchange at the desk, so if you need change, get it at the airport before going here, or walk down to the beach bars past the pier. The will allow you to pay with a credit card in the shops, but would not even change $20 into pesos at the shop or the front desk. (Usually the waiters are more than happy to oblige, if you want even up 10% exchange.) Tip a 1-2 dollars at the restaurants and bars, and you will have excellent service all week! Bring a lot of 1's and 5's if you are American, as you cannot get change easily! I would go back to this resort in a second, really, really good experience and location (the end of the line, too far to walk into town, but the bus into Ixtapa for the chain restaurants and stores is 80 pesos (about 40 cents - but get pesos at the airport!) or you can take a cab for $5. Cab ride into Zihua is $15 each way, but it's a great little town with a lot of restaurants, bars and markets, and a beautiful bay. We walked around for 8 hours, until after midnight, and it was great! Check out Galeanas on the beach for dinner (Alejandro was great!) and Pocallos on Nicolas Bravo (2nd street parallel to the beach) for a live band that plays oldies, and 2 for $5 beers during the music (8-11 or so.) Would like to check out some of the nicer restaurants up on the hillside in the bay sometime, maybe when we go back next time! And we will be back, this was an incredibly beautiful place, no big town party feel like Cancun or Puerta Vallarta, this is a laid back vacation to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery and people!

Room Tip: Get a room higher up (15-19) with a balcony for a great sunset view each night, but bring bug spray...
