“GREAT HOTEL AND BEACH”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2011

The beach was large and very clean with many places to lounge. The pools were clean and room for everyone. The hotel staff were all excellent, friendly, and helpful. We asked for a room with 2 queens( because my wife has the "JIMMY LEGS") and the girl at the front desk switched us with no problems. The restaurant/food courts had a good choice of entries, with different menu's each day. We ate at Don Quixote twice, as you get to eat at the 2 specialty restaurants with a stay of 7 nights. We were going to try the steak house at night ( La Palapa Restaurant), but it was closed on Friday night. The nightly entertainment was good, with many beuatiful costumes, but it would have been a little nicer for us Gringo's if it wasn't all in Spanish. The little area around Ixtapa is safe, with many restaurants, gift stores, and bargain areas. We were out late at night, with no problems. We took a day to tour Zihuatanejo and it was very interesting and also safe(fresh fish sold each morning from the nights catch as the marina). The sailing/ snorkeling tour was fun, but if you have snorked in Cansun, forget it and take the sailboat out for the sunset cruise. We also took an ECO tour arranged by Apple Vacations and it was great with going out to the real country and seeing all sort of ways people work and live.-6 hours with lunch and a boat ride. The only thing the Hotel could do better is post when meals are being served in the entertainment pavillion and when the restaurants are closed. We will diffenately go back.

The location of the hotel was great. Right on the beach and just across the street there is a small flea market. Only about four blocks from downtown with more shopping and restaurants and bars. Stayed with entire family for parents 50th anniversary. The rooms were clean and neat. The beds are hard so ask for a mattress pad/topper. Our air conditioner didn't work the first night and too late to get it fixed but they brought up a fan right away. Fixed the AC the next day, but it was noisy when it did run so only ran during the day and opened the balcony door at night. There was always an abundance of food in the restaurants, however it was the same food most every day and would have liked to see more variety or change in the menu. We were hoping to see maybe tacos, fajitas or seafood varieties. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Overall, I would definitely stay at the Barcelo again.

Have been home 4 days and just got back from the Dr. I have a parasite from Mexico and since we did the all inxlusive I am assuming it was from the hotel. The food was the same old thing EVERYDAY. I couldnt stand even looking at the buffet anymore. The first day we arrived a man knocked on our hotel door at 9:30p.m.. My friend finally got up to see who it was after the 3rd knock but by that time the man was already letting himself in our room with a master key. He had a uniform on so we assumed he worked in the hotel but had called for nothing so we did not know why he was there. He mummbled something in spanish we couldnt understand and left. We reporetd the situation the next day to the front desk and asking why someone let themselves in our room and was told they would check into it. We checked back again and they said they did not know why someome was in our room. My friend said she could identify the man but they could have cared less. They just said they did not know and that was the end of it. We believe he was going to ransack our room for whatever he could get. They had 2 pools for kids and one for adults. The kids were always in the adult pool which isnt a big deal but they would sit on the steps so getting in and out was very difficult. I watched a couple try to get there handicapped adult daughter in and out of the pool everyday and those people would not move off the steps. There kids had there beverages sitting on the side of the pool and would spill them and all that stuff would spill into the water along with the straw and cup. Of course they did not pick it up. It was just discusting along with the cigerette butts that were put out and left sitting along side the drain. The Hotel looks good and the rooms are fine but other then that it was very disapointing. There are a number of friends that go to Ixtapa every year and we try to stay someplace new but I will certainly NEVER recommend this place. It has a pretty wrapper but its not so pretty once you start opening it up.

Two women travelling to Ixtapa, a place in Mexico we had never been before was interesting. Foreigners were definitely outnumbered. This is a great family resort with a lot to do and hands down the best activity team I’ve seen in a few years. I have to give credit to all the entertainers as well. 3 weeks ago I was in the Riviera Maya at a 5 star and the entertainment at Barcelo FAR out shined that of the higher end resort. These singers and performers have pure talent, there’s no lip syncing going on here. I enjoyed all the shows which take place just on the edge of the property and could be overlooked. Some nights they served dinner out in the entertainment area and other nights they didn’t and we never did figure that out. Don’t miss the Mexican Fiesta Night (Wednesday nights), and don’t miss the Churro’s, they went really fast when they showed up on the dessert table and I didn’t see them again that night. They were still warm and crispy and the best dessert I had at the resort. The food was all really good. The staff are amazing, Marcelino, Jorge, I will miss you. All the staff are amazing. Every night after the entertainment we did end up in the Hotel bar/disco, where the entertainment team came and did 2 sets of live music a mix of local and the occasional pop hits, then the DJ takes over. Every night there was a different crowd but it was always fun. All of the locals that stay there I think are somewhat entertained by us foreigners. There are a lot of large families and kids that stay at the resort and the property is very condensed compared to other places I’ve travelled but it also makes it more personable, and you don’t get lost in the crowd. Takes a couple days of adjusting then you will fit right in. The beach was great, Tsunami warning was issues the last day we were there and the hotel kept everyone off the beach and I think handled the situation very proactively watching the horizon from many different vantage points. We had an oceanview on the 2nd floor and it was amazing. Our room was comfortable and well cleaned every day. Take advantage of the two bike rides available at no extra charge, one shorter ride to the Marina, a longer ride to Playa Linda to see the crocodiles, now that is something not to miss, although the bike ride was long and the group did sort of take off on us, we went at our own pace through a shaded conservation area (trail). We did make our way in Zihuatanejo on the bus and it was so easy and very safe which was a concern travelling as 2 women foreigners. We didn’t find prices better in town as everyone was saying, but it was interesting to walk around in the ‘city’. Ixtapa is such a quaint little tourist town. Very safe. I don’t have a single bad thing to say about it and compared my most recent 5 star experience in the Riviera I’d say that’s pretty impressive of the property, management and staff. I really recommend the resort and wish you all happy exploring. Thank you again to the staff who were amazing.

What an incredible vacation spot. All the research and reviewing of other travelers comments paid off. We spent 2 full weeks laying on the beach, by the pool, sightseeing in Ixtapa and Zihuat., and taking part in the so many off resort adventures like ATV'ing, para-sailing and off shore fishing. The weather was perfect;sunny and 30 + everyday. Can't beat that.
The resort was wonderful. Lots of Mexican vacationers as well, ore so on the weekend. If your not interested in being around lots of kids then this may not be the spot. The beach though was more adult friendly. No trouble finding a comfy lounger any time of the day.
The beach was magical. You could walk for ever and not step on a single stone. Everyday the pool and beach area were cleaned and set up like new.
The staff are amazing. Philiberto our West Jet rep, Rafael who was there to help us with what ever we needed and Joshua, Yenny, Jose and Jorge who served us with such finesse and customer service. These are just of few of the wonderful people we had the pleasure of meeting at the resort. Tipping is good for them, considering the staff make only $5.00/day. We found though that tipping doesn't really change the level or quality of great service. Great games room, gym and craft area even for adults. The evening shows were lots of fun. Wow can they dance! The buffet's were average to good with enough variety for everyone. We went off the resort and ate at some of the amazing local restaurants.
Wow business is not great, 40-50 % drop as tourism is down. We felt very safe walking at night.
Tip; exchange Canadian for peso's at the bank. Much better rate and very convenient bank locations.
Golf courses were overpriced. The Marina golf course fairly well maintained but both still not worth bringing your clubs for.
We met so may wonderful people from Canada and the US. We are so going back . When you find the perfect spot why go anywhere else!

My husband and I stayed at the Barcelo for a winter getaway in January 2004 and returned this past December 16-22 - this time with my recently retired parents who had never traveled to Mexico before.

Before choosing the Barcelo again, we did read recent reviews. Very little has changed since our last trip, which is what we were hoping for! Yes, the Barcelo is still an older hotel - but it is painstakingly clean, taken care of, and service is wonderful. Food has a great deal of variety and options (the chilaquilles at breakfast are amazing! love the fruit juices too), though it's not the type of fancy fare you might find at newer (pricier) resorts. The location absolutely cannot be beat - we felt like we had plenty of room to roam, but there was plenty of shopping, restaurants, and things to do within a very short walking distance. And, we were only steps away from the beach hut that does 1 hr massages for $20 - bliss!

We booked online through the Barcelo as their website does offer the best prices that we could find. And we did take the TripAdvisor tip of requesting a room above the 6th floor for the ocean view, which we had (and loved). No complaints whatsoever about our rooms or the view.

On the first evening, there was a small issue with bathroom plumbing that was taken care of immediately. Air conditioning, room safes, and refrigerators were all in working order, and the refrigerator was kept stocked daily - though we noticed that the beer selection had changed from Modelo to Tecate since our last stay. My parents' room had a flat screen TV, though ours was a much older model (who is in Mexico for the TV, though??).

Early in the week, there was a party on the beach that had loud music, but it did wrap up shortly after midnight. Also, work was being done (during the day) on a room inbetween our two, and there was quite a bit of construction noise. After notifiying the front desk that a guest was trying to nap, the noise was kept to a minimum or avoided when we were there during the day. Staff was wonderfully attentive.

One of the things that our party enjoyed about this hotel is that it draws to Mexican, Canadian, and American guests. During our stay, probably 80% of the guests were from Mexico - which meant we got to brush up on our Spanish a bit and there were also holiday-related activities going on that were more tied to Mexican culture. We loved this aspect of our stay. Several reviews have made extremely unfavorable remarks about staying during Mexican holidays/vacation times, and I think that's incredibly unfortunate (to say the least). There some cultural differences that are noticeable (like elevator protocol - though the norm is to stampede the elevator to get in while others are still trying to exit, it's also expected that you greet the other people riding up with you by saying good afternoon, morning, etc). We also found that we had breakfast to ourselves around 8am-9am. The bottom line though is that you go to another country to experience its culture and meet its people, and the hotel service was always accomodating to everyone, regardless of what country you're visiting from.

We did get two towels stolen by the pool near the end of the stay, which was frustrating (and a little stupid how they deal with this - you don't get "charged" if someone turns in an extra - so one person in our party was shorted a towel when another was given a new towel card. We may have retaliated by "borrowing" a new card, because the teenager working the desk left them there unattended...so, no harm, no foul).

Shows are...interesting. It's worth seeing at least one - Vegas, the Barcelo is not.

We were there during the hatch/release of baby sea turtles, which occured every night at dusk while we were there. So fun to watch - a really, really neat experience.

Some non-Barcelo related items - the fishing with Julio's Tours (also a TripAdvisor rec) was great. They really do it up at Otilla's afterward - excellent, excellent food. Be careful about your taxi selection - we rode in some doozies on the way back from Zihua. Tamales y Atoles Any and Banditos are Zihua faves for lunch. Beware that the childsize portion of pozole (FABULOUS, btw!) means that it could be shared by 4-6 children.

My parents loved this trip - they can't wait to go back - and my husband and I had a wonderful time as well. The Barcelo is low-key but accomodating with lots of options. The location and value cannot be beat. The people in Zihua/Ixtapa are wonderful; we always felt safe. And the Ixtapa sunsets are breathtaking. A perfect vacation!

Our stay at the Barcelo in Ixtapa was great. Good service, friendly staff, nice room. Great view from our 2nd floor corner room, it was bigger than the others on the floor. The al-a -cart meals were wonderful. I didn't care for the supper buffets. Shopping is excellent, right across the street & banks were very convenient. We felt very safe leaving the resort at night & enjoyed some cool ones at different street bars. We also had a wonderful meal at a restaurant that was about a five minute walk. I loved walking the beaches in the morning. I also saw baby turtles being born & released at 7pm. it was awesome, we all were telling the babies to swim & be safe. Check-in & out were very easy & painless. We will return to Ixtatpa & the Barcelo next year. The weather was 30 every day.
