“critically slow, inattentive and unfriendly service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

We have been 4 Polish tourists staying just for 2 nights in neighbouring Casciano in Val di Pesa. Upon our arrival we were recommended to have a dinner in this restaurant by a local man from our hotel who made also a reservation for us. The restaurant had no parking place and we had to leave our car outside, in the village. Our first bad experience: we were sitting idle at the table for about 45 minutes and had to make visible gestures to call the waiter until he finally came to us and we could order drinks and food. Two men, including the owner of the restaurant and the waiter were extremely slow, inattentive and seemed to ignore us for a reason we could not guess. We even felt a tense, hostile atmosphere and no wonder we were not in the mood for ordering regular dinner. We could not hear normal courtesy like "enjoy your meal" or "here you are" either in Italian or English or any other language at all. When we paid the bill the man whom I considered to be the owner asked me what country we came from. I said that we were from Poland. The guy could not believe and said that he took us for Russians. Apparently, he has had some problems with Russian people in the past or perhaps he had some prejudices against Russian people, I do not know. Anyway, a strange behaviour and it seemed to me he wanted to reciprocate to us for something...... When ordering the food they accepted 3 X some dishes with rabbit but came to us after 30 minutes just to tell us that they were short of rabbit... No apologies, at all. While leaving that place I told the guy that they were very impolite and nonchalant towards us. He agreed and answered that this was due to the lack of 2 persons from the staff that day.... Needless to say that they were shortly bunkrupts if they would offer similar standards of service anywhere else in Europe, even in Russia. Prevailing number of restaurants in Italy has a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere. This was an exception and probably the worst restaurant we have ever gone to across Italy. I have posted this review just to prevent other people to pop in this place which is for sure a mistake,
Arrogant staff and frustrated owner is to much for a dinner.

“Very friendly hosts that enhance the delight of a great dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

We were lost and got to the restaurant very late, though we called and explained. The host and hostess were extremely patient. It must have crossed there closing time but everyone was so warm and accepting to pit in the extra effort for us to get the right order. We got home late, but fulfilled and appreciative of friendly hosts in Tuscany.

“Decent local restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2012

This is the overflow place when Osteria Dell'ignorante fills up. It is no more and no less than one would expect of a restaurant in a small town. Their house red wine is too rough to drink on its own but pairs well with the food and is €9/bottle. The food is average for Tuscany, which has generally great food and the staff were friendly even when short staffed.
They provide a good meal at a good price.

Good quality, value for money. Home cooked regional specialities. Not to be missed. You will be made to feel very welcome. Hidden terrace at the rear giving fantastic view of the Tuscan countryside.

“"Once Upon a Time"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2012

That's what the name of this fabulous restaurant translates to in English and in culinary terms it certainly lives up to its name. Remember when dining out was an adventure? Here, one could at least expect to savor the delights of a first class kitchen and ambiance that harkens back to home style cooking with an elegant fairy tale like setting. That's what you get at "C'era Una Volta." As an American living in Tuscany for the past seven years, it remains one of my favorite "haunts". Don't miss it!
