“Booking Service a HUGE disappointment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

It is a real shame that the booking service and customer contact could not have been better as the hotel looks absolutely fabulous. The booking service is the first point of contact and positive impressions should be made. However, I have experienced real difficulty in trying to book a room for my family. I have attempted to ring the hotel on several occasions (but not able to get through or leave a message), left a request on the hotel's website, and even gave a message to the' cleaner' to forward on to the owners, however, after a period of one week, I had not had any reply. When I do eventually ring and speak to the owner, instead of being humble and apologetic for not having got back to me, I find her guarded, defensive, and making assumptions that I do not wish to proceed with the booking and she ended the call! I find this absolutely incredible when one is supposed to be used to dealing with members of the public. I would quite happily have booked if I could have been told available dates!

...A blueprint for a stylish, dog-friendly weekend near Penzance.

The trickiest thing when you have pups in tow is finding great dog-friendly accommodation, especially if you just need a few nights and aren’t in the market for a week-long holiday let.

Finding good dog-friendly restaurants and gastro-pubs can also be a struggle, but our recent weekend in the Penzance area proved to be a resounding success.

After a bit of searching we found Lamorna Cove hotel http://www.thelamornacovehotel.com/.

This is a converted chapel with around 10 individual apartments. We had number 4, a modern and well-appointed 1-bedroomed apartment with a lounge/diner area. Seemingly suspended on the side of a valley, it had floor to ceiling windows overlooking the valley down to Lamorna Cove on one side, and a patio overlooking a stylish pool area and well-maintained grounds on the other.

To be frank, Lamorna Cove itself was a bit lack-lustre, featuring a big NO DOGS sign on the small beach area. Also the pub across from the hotel - the Lamorna Wink - was not dog friendly, but I’m sure it would be fine outside in the summer. The location, however, proved to be a perfect base for getting around, and when we wanted a few bevvies in the evening, we used Stone’s – a dog-friendly taxi service (01736 363400).

On the Friday night we taxi’d over to a restaurant on the beach at Sennen Cove. Recently taken over by local Michelin-starred chef, Ben Tunnicliffe, this is a light, airy, tastefully-decorated space showcasing vintage surfboards, quirky BMX bikes and Newlyn College artwork.

While our pups (Lucy & Leela) showed off their new “Life’s the beach” t-shirts we ate starters: fish soup with rouille and seafood tempura with chilli jam and guacamole, followed by a juicy rib-eye steak and roast monkfish for main course. For dessert I some fabulous home-made chocolate mousse and hubby had local cheeses (they were pretty amazing, so I had to corner Mr Tunnicliffe on who his cheese supplier was).

Ben was keen to get feedback on the meal. At a push I would say the tempura could have been a bit more adventurous and have included squid or shellfish (it was just fish). Ben explained his mantra was to use what was fresh and seasonal, so the tempura ‘contents’ could vary day by day. The menu itself would also change regularly with the seasons (albeit maintaining some staples like handmade burgers and fish and triple-cooked chips).

The Sennen Cove restaurant was so good we went back for brunch the following morning. Their bread is made each day on the premises, so even if you just had a bacon sandwich you’d be in for a treat. We can recommend the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (nicely baveuse) and the blueberry pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup.

To burn off the cals we did some ball-throwing on the golden surfer beach followed by walkies on the coastal path along to Land’s End.

In the afternoon we took in the Penzance shopping scene. As well as the seaside/pirate paraphernalia and usual high street shops, don’t miss the more interesting shops on Chapel Street. This included a boutique selling t-shirts and prints by local artist, Mat McIvor. It’s a small world and even smaller down Penzance-way, and it turns out that Mat’s partner, Izzy, recognized the pups from the previous evening at Sennen Cove (she works for Ben). She recommended we try Ben’s Tunniclliffe’s fish restaurant at the Tolcarne Inn in Newlyn.

So that evening we sampled the more specialist fish menu at the Tolcarne. The venue is unassuming: the pub still has a regular bar and the décor is quite basic, but the results from the kitchen truly do justice to Newlyn’s fishing heritage. I can recommend the seared scallops and the roast hake with Jerusalem artichokes and black Bream with pepperonata. Again, the pups were made welcome and given a water bowl on arrival.

beautiful place, peaceful beautiful and quite. The room was decorated amzingly nothing looked cheap, and no corners cut. The swimming pool was lovely even in october and with resident rabbits so sweet. the sauna was great after the swim. And thought had been put in to provide a sublime vegetarian meal. Everything was wonderful and I took my dog too. absolutly perfect

Room Tip: apartment 3 was on the ground level and had floor to ceiling windows

This restaurant is out of the way (to put it mildly) but well worth the visit.

The staff are wonderful, the atmosphere relaxed, romantic and unhurried.

We had a wonderful meal. The food is fresh, and seemed to have a slight Asian fusion feel ( the chef is from New Zealand).

Lovely fresh fish, inventive cheese dishes, delicious wines (in all price categories).

Not the cheapest night out (esp with taxi to and from Falmouth) but worth ever penny.

Looking forward to returning next time we're in the area.

Hi I have been ar this hotel for six days now and have another four to go and i DO NOT want to leave the place is just great. I have just come back from Sardinia and Ireland both lovely places but they did not compare to the view and comfort that we have here. We are in room 5 with wonderful views of the sea and the outside heated pool.the cream teas are amazing and the owners really nice. I nearly did not come after reading review posted about the previouse owner but so glad i did. I think trip adviser should take these off as they are really misleading. Well done to the new owners you have done a great job.

Room Tip: Room 5 has the best veiws of pool and sea and we have our own patio and very peacefull

My family had the most wonderful stay at Lamorna Hotel in August 2014. The new owners couldn't have been more accommodating and good natured. The whole family has worked flat out to refurbish the apartments, the grounds, planting, and pool which they have done to a very high and attractive standard.
We stayed in apartment 1 which was beautifully decorated and comfortable with stunning views down to the pool dopping down further to the Cove itself as a backdrop. We all loved the heated pool which was particularly magic for swimming in as the sun rose over the hills in the morning. The apartment opened onto our own decking area, with a table and seating for four people and umbrella with just a couple of steps down to the pool.
The hotel has just started to do light bites and teas which is really useful if you don't feel like cooking or going out. The apartment is so comfortable that you almost hope for rain as an excuse to stay in and enjoy the facilities.
In the Lamorna Cove there is a cafe serving breakfasts which also produces the most delicous main meals, not cheap but good value with seating outside overlooking the Cove. Be aware that the cafe stops serving at 8.30pm. Mousehole is a delightful nearby harbour which needs exploring and is lit up at night, but If you want to eat there in the evening, you need to book ahead in high season - even the fish and chip shop shuts at 8pm!
We had a dog with us and our hosts took great trouble to find out which beaches were dog friendly. There is so much to see and do in the area, you need to come back over and again to do it justice. My family wanted to book another week there for next year as we left!

Room Tip: Apartment 1 has windows on three sides making it very light with stunning views. It has a master bed...

We had an absolutely amazing week at The Lamorna Cove Hotel. The hotel has changed hands recently and the new owners and staff couldn't have been more helpful. Our 3 children loved the heated outdoor pool, and being able to walk 5 minutes down to Lamorna Cove for some rock pooling. We stayed in Apartment 14 which was right up at the top of the hotel and had lovely balcony views over the cove and out to sea. It was all clean, modern and tastefully furnished. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: We stayed in Apartment 14 which although was furthest away from the pool and reception, it had acces...
