Just back from a heavenly week at The Unicorn, it's sublime...so chilled.. easily the best spot for the sunset on the coast, with a perfect view from the newly built pub decking, you may even get to see the mystery 'green flash' if you are lucky.. the staff here are amazing, from the lovely Si to all the others! so friendly, anyone with a penchant for mermaids will love the bar girls! If you are feeling romantic the lovely Dennis the resident bard is always on hand to give you a few verses..

The food is really good, simple food cooked well with local fresh ingredients and served with a smile... what more do you need... The beach is lovely and you can take surf lessons and there's a very handy play park almost in the pub garden... nice!

I'm already booked for next year! what a joy..;-)

Room Tip: You can book a surf 'pod' dorm like room if lot's of you coming down to surf also has r...

Have just spent 4 nights at the unicorn. What a great find. Excellent location in the centre of the tiny village of Porthtowan and right on the beach. Ideal for surfing and swimming and generally being a creature of the sea. cliffs all around for the most amazing walks to neighbouring villages with stunning views. The sunsets are a 'wow' factor!
Great hostel with the most comfortable beds, and good kitchen facilities if you want to cook. I mainly ate out at the Unicorn and highly recommend the home made beef/cheese burger (Hugh) and Sunday roast. Brilliant menus all round.
Sampled some open mic and a live band and even squeezed in a film in the cool new cinema. A big thank you to all the really great friendly staff who assisted in making my stay so good. Great place, fab facilities and spot on location.

I stayed in The Unicorn in Porthtowan as it looked like an affordable place in a great location for a short break for the family. It more than exceeded all our expectations. Clean, quiet, with a fab sand covered playground that had great equipment that looked new situated next door with easy access. The food was reasonably priced with plenty of choice though we could have prepared our own in their kitchen which was well equipped. The other great plus was the beautiful beach that is stunning. We'll be going back next year for sure.

Happened upon this place through a search on here and was slightly put off by some of the older reviews, although the most recent have been extremely positive - how right the most recent ones are. These guys know exactly what they are doing. They have embraced both the community and tourist demand, offer excellent food and entertainment, even down to the 20 odd seater cinema they have installed - excellent entertainment for young and old alike.

The ideal setting afforded me fantastic sunsets, excellent parking and a surf school right on the doorstep. A two minute walk to the beach meant that my time was not being pressed with mass organisation of my day.

The accommodation was excellent, with offers of dorm sharing or en suite rooms, both equally affordable and excellently maintained. The staff were more than responsive to my needs, friendly and sympathetic. The food - excellent as stated. Great location for cliff top walks to St Agnes and Portreath. Information from staff as to where eat when walking was first rate...

A definite return will be made before the season is finished. I may even venture back during the winter months for a quiet escape.

FANTASTIC STAY!

A great place to stay – right next to a most beautiful beach in a really lovely village that feels like time forgot it. What a great find the Unicorn is, definitely recommended! Friendly staff, great pub and surroundings with incredible scenery, loads of great beaches and countryside around. Great to use as a base and easy to get to other places, if you're planning to go to Cornwall then think about coming here. There's almost too much to say about my stay here, I enjoyed it so much.

Wanted to visit Cornwall for a getaway with my boys at the start of the summer holidays and a friend said we go to Porthtowan because we might get a chance to surf – something the boys fancied that I didn't. A google search found the Unicorn on a hostel site, I liked the look of the website and called, expecting them to be fully booked. Turned out they had a family room available – New owners had taken over the pub and reopened it a couple of weeks before and had only just begun marketing, and not a lot of people knew it yet. But something of a small world meant that in the conversation it also turned out I know the new owners' other pub, a great place called the Railway in Tulse Hill – just a couple of miles from where I live in London. It's the local of several friends, one of them the one who suggested we go to Porthtowan who, later it turned out, didn't even know these guys had taken on the Unicorn in Porthtowan until I called him. I like the Railway a lot, they have an amazing garden and the staff are good - So we set off from London with high hopes and some excitement.

It took a long time to get to Cornwall. Because of a few, unintentional, detours en route we turned up really late, about midnight, when it was pitch dark and worried the pub might be shut. But this inviting place was lit up in the night with a few customers chatting quietly and we were met by a charming woman who introduced herself as Megan with a cheery 'oh we wondered if you got lost!' She showed us to our room, asking if we'd like anything and bode well for the rest of our stay, as weer made to feel comfortable from the moment we arrived...

The Unicorn's a nice looking place, it feels laid back and welcoming, the decor's all calming sophisticated greens and browns with lots of nice objects, like chess sets and a big sign saying LOVE, dotted around. This is all complemented by lots of well chosen quality sixties and seventies wooden furniture, great tables and chairs that make you want to hang out there all day. And night. The place feels great.

The family room is nothing exciting – but is what it needs to be: simple and clean. There's no pretensions about it, neutral, plain décor with a big firm mattress double, and a two bunk for the kids with nice bedding. A desk, set of drawers, a TV and kettle with a range of teas, coffee and chocolate and an en suite shower room. The shower was easy to use but could be more powerful; there's no mini bar but that's fine by me; I hate them. The room's quiet and peaceful, very relaxing – far enough away not hear the hubub from the bar at night, the windows over look what is the front garden which was full of poppies.

Given that we arrived in the middle of a dark night and didn't know what to expect of Porthtowan in the morning, we woke up to a pretty amazing place. The light from the wide conservatory that extends right across the front of the pub makes coming into what is a lovely feeling bar makes going 'down for breakfast' more like being at home than staying at a pub. On the way to the bar walk through a purpose built mini cinema (still awaiting delivery of a screen when we were there) which adds, literally, a bit of theatre to the experience.

The light on the first morning was so nice we went straight out before breakfast and had a quick walk down to the beach. Porthtowan's really, really, not like being in England, it's more like a secluded cove miles up on the West Coast of the Algarve – it really is special. It feels like a surfers' paradise. It's one of those rare places you visit and immediately want to spend the rest of your life there.

Breakfast at the Unicorn is simple toast and jam, cereals, yogurts and fresh fruit, selection of teas and great coffee. All the staff seem to know how to make great coffee from the espresso machine, great crema on the espresso and no scalding of milk for cappuccino and latte something which so often ruins them. They do a brunch menu that looks pretty good but we didn't try it, come to think of it I don't know what time the kitchen opens.

We felt so comfortable at the pub we were happy to spend a lot of time around there, a little bit difficult really when there's so much to see around the area. We managed Lands' End and St Ives and went up the coast to St Agnes and to the next beach up the coast and we did quite a bit of walking and admiring the countryside and landscape nearby.

We ate evening meal or lunch here three times – the food was really good all round – the boys said the burgers were about the best they'd ever had, and that says something, the're very discerning and have eaten a lot of good burgers – the pizzas are pretty good too and everything we tried was much better than average. I'd like to see a more exciting menu though there's absolutely nothing to complain about.

By the end of our stay, which was only three nights, the Unicorn was home from home.

We'll definitely stay there again if we go to Cornwall. The people and the place are so nice, it' brill.

Room Tip: The family room's really nice and quiet
