I recently visited the Porthtowan Backpackers with my partner and her 13 year old daughter, where we thoroughly enjoyed a 5 night stay.
Trying to find a family room at a reasonable (or cheap!) price for this area proved to be quite some task with many establishments hell bent on funding their entire year from the summer profits. Thankfully I stumbled across the 'Backpackers Hostel' by chance and right from the first call was amazed at the level of service and warm reception that was offered. This fantastic, friendly and welcoming atmosphere only increases upon arriving at the venue, which I would pitch somewhere between a hostel and a B&B. It had everything that we needed with the added benefit of being very homely. As the manager quite rightly points out, it's right on the doorstep of the beach and if you are really that anal, you may find some grains of sand around from time to time . . . . . . . . . . .big deal, you're almost on the beach and paying the price of a bottle of house wine to stay there! The owners (who I really cannot speak highly enough off) do have a couple of cats and a dog too. I happen to hate animals and they posed absolutely no problems to me whatsoever, in fact they are just as friendly as the owners. We literally used the venue to sleep and wash yet were still made to feel part of the extended 'backpackers family'. Steve and Jane really are on hand for everything and nothing is too much trouble, from advising on days out, booking surf lessons, recommending, booking and transferring you to and from a fantastic local pub/restaurant, organising flowers from their excellent florist shop (another of their businesses attached to the building) and keeping you amused with anecdotal tales!
We managed to visit and use a range of cyder barns, amusement parks, beaches, restaurants and pubs throughout Padstow, Crantock, St Agnes, Perranporth, Holywell Bay and Newquay. Yet still one of the lasting memories from our visit to the north coast of Cornwall will be Steve, Jane and the excellent value for money that they offer with an outstanding personal touch.
The ensuite family room was great and offered to us for exclusive use despite being under occupied
