“don't choose the chalets”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2014

the hotel rooms might be all right, but the annexed chalets are terrible: infested by mosquitos at any time of the day and night, no view, not enough lighting in the lounge and bathroom (having a shower in the dark is not nice). the fittings are basic and don't really give you the idea of being on holidays. Additionally the staff/owner were quite rude to us. definitely, real experience different from what appear on the pictures on their website.

The place has definitively a potential, but the owners are not up to the task. As a family run business, this place relies much on their personal likes and dislikes, with a very limited ability to act professionally and friendly as you would expect in the Italian country side.
Knowing well the Region, I can say that such a place is really a damage for the image of Tuscan food and people.
The breakfast is very basic and average, and the restaurant is not up to the expectations: the wine was not a quality wine, food very average for Italian standards and quite low level for what you would expect in Tuscany, and the service proved to be unable to fulfil even basic request - side dishes, request for water or wine were disregarded.
Owners are quite confusing, unable to manage everything and everyone properly, either they are unable to manage the 20+ rooms and their guests or just playing the blond, especially when it comes to billing.
It's a pity that the owners make the guest feeling as they were disturbing and interfering with their country life and it is uncomfortable when owners minimised any problem accusing guests to have too much expectations, or being too picky about insects in the rooms.
I am sure living there is lovely, yet, if you want to experience Italian friendliness and enjoy a relaxing holiday in Tuscany with great food and atmosphere, I would advice not to go there.
Feeling as an unwanted guest, is not certainly a good way to enjoy a holiday.

Relais Ciavatta is very close to the Terme di Saturnia, beautiful thermes in most attractive and natural Tuscan surrounding. Saturnia and Montemerano are only a few minutes drive away. Hosts here are very friendly and amicably and will help you with lots of suggestions, if you need. We really enjoyed our beautiful room with its rustical tuscan ambiente. If you come here, try out as well "il Nibbio" best restaurant in Montemerano.

We spent 2 nights in Relais Ciavatta, in a Superior room with breakfast. The location of Relais Ciavatta is great, with the restaurant next to it - and it was very good food.
The Superior room was very disappointing; even though it was a big one with a nice shower, the furniture was not very tasty and overall the room was quite dark; the TV was a tiny and old one. For the price, we were expecting a higher standard....
The breakfast was not amazing; and I think we were very disappointed by the staff. They don't seem to care that much about you, they don't speak English, and when we left they seemed to have lost track of our booking...
Finally, the swimming-pool is a nice one in size and the water was clean; but around it the grass was not cut; it looks way better on the pictures than in reality.
I would say that overall it is a very expensive Relais for what you get.

Surrounded by olive and oak trees, Relais Ciavatta has its own private gardens where you will find an outdoor pool with sweeping countryside views, and plenty of free parking space.
Must have been wonderful BEFORE. Now it's on it's way to ruins.
Very bad service. Restaurant not open.
