“Filthy hostel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

A filthy, dirty hostel. The only 2 bathrooms are extremely dirty. Beds are dirty. They didn't even give me any sheet or pillow case. You just basically sleep on the dirty bed and pillow that they have never washed. I got bitten by bed bugs that night. It's cheap but there are a lot of cheap hostels in Mexico that give you better value, cleaner experience. Maybe they should raise the price and keep it cleaner or build more bathrooms. To me, it's a rip-off. I've lived in Mexico for 5 years and have stayed in many hostels. The only good thing is the people there are very friendly.

It's a bit strange to read all these excellent reviews, because I didn't like this hostel at all.
Good: price, location, free wifi, rooftop terrace.
Bad: dorm felt depressing, sheets smelt, there is a disco next door making extremely loud music until 4am, no breakfast, only 1 hour of free computer use a day. I left 2 days earlier than I had planned.

My boyfriend and I went to Zacatecas last June. We stayed at Villa Colonial Hostel for 2 nights. We payed 300 pesos (about 23 USD) for both and got a room with 2 double beds and a private bathroom. The place used to be a house and it is cozy and rustic. The hosts are really nice and they will help you with anything you need. It was clean, although it is definitely not a 5 stars hotel. They have a kitchen you can use, computers with internet access and a lovely terrace, splendid, were you can catch a glimpse of all Zacatecas city and, best of all, it is right behind the beautiful cathedral. It's a really great option for backpackers too, cause it has dorms and it's full of young people from many places of the world. If you're looking for a nice, not luxury place, this is the one. I would definitely go back.

Room Tip: We stayed in the last floor and it was quite and it had a window with a nice view. I can't tell...

Clean, secure, close to downtown. Good housekeeping. Based on another review, I thought it would be cold and brought a blanket, but didn't need it. Owners stored a motorcycle in the entryway and then a second, making going out the front door a bit challenging. The downtown nightlife was sometimes too loud, and the church bells rang early. The rooftop was beautiful, but the sewer vented low and sometimes smelled foul. . But overall, worth the price.

Room Tip: Some rooms had kitchenettes.

Stayed here with 3 other girls. The location of the hostel is really great, very safe, right behind the cathedral. Restaurants, stores, banks, coffee shops close by. Rooms were large and clean with balcony but very cold. For the price, would definitely recommend :o)

Zacatecas is a beautiful city built on hills in the high areas of Mexico.

This hostel is a high building, in a high city with a high roof with high views.

I stayed in January when the road in front of the hostel was being replaced together with pipes, so it should soon, have a nice new road. The hostel is very well presented with water filters (providing free drinking water) in the two kitchens and set on many floors to tone your buttocks. Showers have boiling hot water, but taps seem limited to cold water.

I stayed in a room on the top floor which had an amazing view, although it was a little cold in January but warm enough in bed (the hostel - as most buildings in the area - has no heating as most of the year its warm). The rooms are dated and my sheets required replacing as they had holes in them, towels could have been cleaner too - but don't let this detract from the cheap place with amazing views.

Overall I had an excellent, central, stay in this hostel and would recommend it, I would only recommend bringing a sleeping bag, especially if you are staying in the winter months and a towel.

Room Tip: If you are sensitive to cold, avoid high rooms in the winter!

The best hostal in Mexico I have stayed in! They staff are second to none very friendly, professional and helpful. The hostal has many nice rooms and a terrace looking out over the city. It is centrally located in a very safe area near Shops, Restaurants and the Mercado. The hostal has a sophisticated security system and cameras all over. Very safe for females or lone travellers. There is Wifi access throughout the building and computers available in the Reception. It is very traditionally Mexican. I came for 2 days and stayed for a week! Thanks Luis, Antonio and staff! Zacatecas is beautiful and very friendly place and is a must visit if you are travelling in Mexico! Suerte :-)
