We pass Vips every other day here in Morelia, and a couple of times we stopped to look at the menu and to take a peek inside. It has a very pleasant looking atmosphere, inviting even. So on my birthday my girlfriend took me there for a birthday breakfast.
And I have to say that whenever I am in another country and they have American styled places of business, I cannot but help to critique it. To see how close to they real thing they have come.
So we order at Vips. I order a breakfast that consist of 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, coffee, and juice. My girlfriend, Patricia, orders some type of breakfast sandwich, coffee,& fruit.
First the waitress brings our coffee and my juice and a basket of Mexican sweetbread. We are surprised and a little delighted at the extra amenity. Neither of us wanted any, but it was a nice addition to the table. But something in my mind told me to inquire about the sweet bread and it turned out that there would have been additional charges if we had eaten a single piece of bread out of that basket. So why didn't they tell us up front????
Anyway, as I was saying, we ordered. Now I've eaten a thousand times in restaurants like this in the U.S.. Places like Denny's, House of Pancakes, The Waffle House, etc, and it usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes for your order to arrive and when it does it is hot. Well not so at Vips. Our food came in less than 10 minutes from the time we ordered. My butter for my pancakes was too cold and hard, the pancakes were luke warm, and by the time I got thru struggling to put the butter on the pancakes and asked the waitress for some softer butter, everything on the plate was cold. I then asked her to micro-wave my plate. It came back steaming hot and I was even able to put the cold hard butter on my pancakes then. But of course I was extremely disappointed with this meal. And to top it off, the meals were $110 pesos each, which is the equivalent of about $9 U.S. It was not filling either.
I found out that Vips is a subsidiary of Wal-mart, so that's why I said Wal-mart should stick to groceries, in the U.S.!!
