“wonderful colonial hotel experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2012

this is very nice hotel located right beside the city's cathedral. it has a very nice breakfast and is closeto everything. because it's in the city's center you will be hearing music till 2:00 am during the weekends, but i still think this is a very nice option...

It's sad to criticize this property, since it is in an absolutely wonderful historic building & has spectacular public spaces. Unfortunately, I would not return as a hotel guest, & would liimit my visits to the bar & restaurant, in order to enjoy the hotel's unmatched colonial atmosphere. Stayed here 4 prior times over 10+ years, & have witnessed the continued & unabated deterioration of the guest rooms. The rates listed at the check-in desk remain $200++ (USD), though we got a promotional rate of $130 (USD), & even that rate was double what the rooms should actually warrant. The wooden floors are so creaky that you can easily hear guests walking on them as you pass outside the doors, since they have never received any type of stablization. If you stay, be sure to get rooms on the 2nd floor, to avoid hearing every single step taken by guests above your room 24/7.Have visited every State in Mexico over 40+ years, & Morelia numerous times, & have had better rooms in hostals that charge $35. It is sad that the ownership of this hotel has simply chosen to ignore the "one time" crown jewel of Morelia hotels. Be sure to visit the public spaces however, & be impressed with the architectural magnificence of this property. This hotel sits next door to the theater which is under renovation, & on the opposite side of the theater there is a new hotel competitor, in an equally grand colonial building -- The Gran Hotel. The Hotel Los Juaninos, on the other side of The Cathedral is another good choic, if you want colonial ambience. It is on the upper floors of a colonial building, & on first look seems to be a very modern property, until you realize the hotel incorporated the old colonial structure. Both Los Juaninos & The Gran, have rates matching those of The Virrey. There are many less expensive, & very welcoming options in downtown Morelia, should you desire. The entire Staff at Virrey are professional, without exception, & many speak English. The lobby restrooms were recently renovated & upgraded in great style, so I hope this will begin to move through the shabby & rundown guest rooms. Great linens, in keeping with a great property --- but that is the only postive for these rooms. Bathroom fixtures are so terribly worn that they look dirty eventhough they are spotless. A sloppy paint job over the top of worn, chipped & cracked caulking only adds to the rundown appearance.

Room Tip: INSIST on top floor rooms. If you want quiet, take interior rooms, though they will be much darker...

Just returned from a warm, sunny and wonderful vacation to Morelia/Patzcuaro and Uruapan. In Morelia we had the great pleasure to stay at the Hotel Virrey de Mendosa. The location can't be beat, right on the Plaza de Armas which is the center of the historic district. The Hotel is made of stone with a center courtyard lobby covered by a beautiful stained glass ceiling. On the second floor is an open arched terrance that overlooks the Plaza and by wandering through the back side of the Hotel is a staircase and passage to the rooftop and beautiful view of the surrounding city. The Hotel staff was always cheerful and accommodating. We stayed in a junior suite on the second floor with french doors overlooking the center lobby, very comfortable king size bed with lovely linens and terry robes and slippers, flat screen TV, WIFI and creaky wood planked floors. The room was a great sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Outside of important holidays, they are currently offering 50% off posted room rates based on availability. Our room was approximately $110 USD including taxes and fees and includes breakfast in their elegant dining room. Also included a welcome cocktail, 15% off other meals and 50% off the Sunday brunch. It was so worth the price for the location and wonderful experience we had at the Hotel. Highly recommended! English is not widely spoken so contact Miguel Angel Centeno Marin through the email address reservaciones@hotelvirrey.com.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 119 which is very quiet, room 103 has great view of the Plaza but noisy with stree...

Staying in this hotel is to experience the charms of Colonial Mexico. It is beautifully appointed with wonderful antique furniture, portraits from another era, and a strained glass atrium ceiling in the lobby to die for. The rooms are spacious and generously furnished. The American breakfast which you can add to the room is worth every penny, and the dining room is elegant with good service. I recommend a cathederal view room because it provides you with an opportunity to people watch that can't be beaten. Don't worry about the noise because if you close the heavy wooden shutters on the windows silence reigns.

Room Tip: Ask for a cathedral room suite on the first floor.

I stayed here for several days with friends in January, 2006. We were not disappointed! It has the feeling of days gone by, with a beautiful lobby and friendly staff. It is centrally located which is quite important. Great restaurants within walking distance.

Disastrous from start to finish. First, they got our reservations wrong. Booked only half the rooms. After a long stand-off, they tried to make it up by upgrading one of the rooms to the master suite. Well, the suite wasn't ready. It took a team of very surly staff a long time to get it ready. Meantime, the streets had turned mean. Two of our group were harassed at night on the way back to the hotel in the evening. To top it all, no room service at night.

The next morning, breakfast was pathetic. Ill-prepared and badly served. Check-out took forever. And the whole time, this air of apathy hung around the place. The staff just couldn't be bothered.

Definitely seen better days, this one. Such a majestic building going slowly to seed. Time for a management shake-up if you ask me.
