“"Spring Break" visit to Cabo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

We have made many trips to Cabo, but this was our 2nd stay at the Grand Mayan and chose this hotel here due to last minute plans.

Lovely property. Wouldn't really suggest for kids as the swimming pools are very cold to spend much time in; jacuzzis are kind of warm. Grounds are very clean, pool service perfect. If you want to get a beach view from your lounge, the chairs seem to get reserved considerably early being held with beach towels. (No lounge chairs directly on beach)

At check in (and phone calls following) they are pretty aggressive with the "time share presentation invites" - which we had been on previously (would not attend another as it was a horrible/intimidating experience)l, so we passed this time. Employees are super nice, rooms are large (but beds/pillows ~ uncomfortable.)
With all that being said, we do love to visit Cabo; we did have a great vacation with our friends.

We spent the week at the grand Mayan Los cabos as part of a birthday celebration. We have visited and enjoyed the other Mayan locations and this one is by far the best. Intimate and spectacular location in San Jose on the beach a short walk from town with access to all amenities and such a beautiful beach. Great restaurants near by and such friendly and helpful staff - really could not ask for a better experience. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: There is no bad room - every room has an ocean view. Higher floors are desirable of course.

We are currently staying at the Grand Mayan in San Jose. So far our host "Humberto" has been amazing. They upgraded our room at no charge due to it being our honeymoon. The room is on the 5th floor and is brilliant. We do currently belong to another time share agency and after a very polite "no thank you" when offered the tour and presentation we have not been bothered since. The pool is large enough to not feel crowded and the pool service is acceptable. Our waitress does have a very long walk to each of her customers so some forgiveness on time should be expected. One thing everyone should remember, nothing is free. If you sign up expecting tons of gifts and free food for nothing you will be dissapointed. I'm guessing the gift package is worth 2-3 hundred dollars. They are going to certainly try and get that back. If your a member of another agency and book the grand Mayan, politely decline the "prisiontation" and enjoy your stay. We are regulars to Cabo and San Jose is much more peaceful than anyplace in or around Cabo San Lucas city center.

If our stay at this resort had been our first visit to Mexico rather than our 15th or so, we would probably not vacation in Mexico again. Fortunately we have had wonderful stays throughout the country so know that what the Grand Mayan has to offer is not the norm. I have to think some of the other reviewers don't have a lot of resorts to compare this resort with. It was a beautiful setting though the modern decor is not my personal favorite. The pool was cold but not unbearable. The supposed infinity pool was low as were all 3 sections so not as pretty as it could be. Lots of space around the pool because very few people at the resort. Spring break in Mexico and the place was deserted. Gave us a clue that there is a reason it was not full. It was quiet at the pool but not in our room as the walls must be paper thin. We could hear conversations..tv..footsteps....literally everything. That was not good when the family next door was up partying until 5 in the morning. Prices are outrageous. The food is mediocre at best. The time share push is really annoying but we were able to avoid them...most were not so lucky...or forceful with NO. Our biggest irritation with the resort was after two days in our room we were ready to settle in for the evening and saw we had a phone message but before we could check it we got a call from the front desk. They had made an error in reserving adjoining rooms for a family and asked if we would move to another room so the family could be together. They assured us it had a better view. After discussion we decided we would move to help out the family but were upset with the desk and the hassle. Miguel said he would see what he could do for us. We moved and never heard from Miguel again. Not even a "thank you". The phone message we finally checked was the desk asking us to move because there was going to be construction nearby and it might disturb us. That was a big lie. The new room did have a better view and we wondered why we weren't put in it in the first place. Maybe it was because the air conditioning never worked. Multiple calls and no fix. No explanation or anything. The town of San Jose del Cabo is within walking distance and is charming and offers good dining choices. The views of whales from our balcony on a daily basis was a treat. The location of the resort is good but choose one of the resorts on the same street if you are want the best the area has to offer. We will never stay in any Grand Mayan again nor visit Cabo again. Mexico has more to offer than Cabo and the Grand Mayans can give.

Dear ShannonW952 :

We truly appreciate the time you have taken to share with us your impression about your stay at The Grand Mayan.

We are disappointed that we were unable to meet your expectations to the fullest. We generally receive very favorable comments about our staff and the service they provide; unfortunately in this instance, it would appear that is not the case. This will be addressed by the appropriate areas as we always work hard to have a clear communication with our honored guests.

Warm regards,
The Grand Mayan Cabos Management

Location is excellent and the hotel is superbly maintained. Staff is very friendly, efficient and hard working. The hotel is very nicely furnished, comfortable, clean, well maintained and seems to be efficiently run. Pool is expansive. Water could be warmer but OK when we were ready to cool off. Activities staff are well organized for children and engaging.

Getting to nearby shopping and dining is convenient, walkable and a US$5 taxi ride when we didn't want to walk. Snorkeling, dinner cruise and venturing around is easy and safe. Hotel staff is helpful in recommending and making reservations. Highly recommend booking here.

Suggest skipping the time share sales invitations here and other places unless you are really interested in buying. Consumes half a day and is high pressure.

Room Tip: Suggest third floor and above for better ocean views

First of all, we have owned a timeshare with the Mayan group for 8 years, so we are well prepared for our visits. This is our second visit to the property in Cabo, the first was five years ago shortly after they opened in 2007. The resort itself is beautiful, well-maintained and the staff are very friendly. I agree with most of the others who have visited, that the pools are very cold and difficult to swim in. Even some of the hot tubs were only lukewarm.

Although we are Grand Mayan owners, we had a challenge reserving a room this year. Very simply, this resort is small compared to the other properties, so the number of rooms is a fraction of what they have at Nuevo Vallarta or the Riviera Maya. The Mayan group continues to try and upgrade members to levels that they do not have properties for. (Anyone familiar knows that the highest level of membership is now the Grand Luxxe. They only have "real" Grand Luxxe rooms in Nuevo and Riviera.) So, the Grand Luxxe members can book rooms at the other resorts (Cabo, Acapulco, etc) 6 months before other members. This makes it very difficult for Grand Mayan members to get a room since Cabo has become a very popular destination. They are supposedly building a new property for Grand Luxxe members further east of San Jose del Cabo (so I have heard!)

We own a one-bedroom unit, but were only able to book a studio due to availability. We really wanted to visit Cabo this year, so we were ok with this. When we checked in, they gave us a room on the second floor. Very limited ocean view, noisy, long walk to the beach. This room was also a handicap-accessible room, not a big deal other than the entire configuration of the bathroom was different, more closed in. Not what the room is "supposed" to look like. The bathrooms is the rooms typically have a separate shower and toilet room with a full soaking tub in the middle. This bathroom had the tub/shower together and the toilet was not closed off like usual. Again, not a huge deal, just frustrating. We asked for a room on a higher floor and were told that "nothing was available." For the record, we never saw huge numbers of people, the pools were never crowded and the restaurants were empty, so I'm not sure where all of the people were.

Overall, the resort is great. The proximity to San Jose makes it very easy to walk into town to eat at better restaurants and experience somewhat "real" Mexico. There was a festival the week we were there, so we saw a parade, a rodeo and they did an Ironman Triathlon. The Art Walk on Thursday nights in town is nice. A lot of the art galleries and stores stay open late and offer free tequila tastings. They also usually have special pricing for artwork and souvenirs. We ate at some great restaurants, including Mi Cocina and Mi Casa. I also had the best churros from a street vendor in the town square! We also ventured into the new marina area, Puerto Los Cabos. We had a delicious Sunday brunch at the new hotel, El Ganzo. The marina has a walking/biking path that goes around the perimeter. There are sculptures and paintings of very interesting Mexican folkart. It's definitely worth the trip.

We went into Cabo San Lucas for a day trip. We ate and had drinks at a few places on Medano Beach. Tabascos was great for good food and cheap beer. There is great people watching at the Me Hotel on Nikki Beach.

All in all, a fantastic vacation. The Grand Mayan is a timeshare resort with all of the problems inherent in timeshares. We did not go to a presentation this year, which they call an "update" for owners. Although they were a little pushier in asking than in previous years. We just kept saying, no thank you, and they finally stopped calling. We do love Cabo, but will probably go back to Nuevo Vallarta or Riviera Maya next year to avoid some of the room hassles.

Most rooms have a pretty good ocean / pool view, and are well taken care of. Mega store is within walking distance if you want to use the kitchen in your unit. Great restaurants in town just a 15 minute walk away. My only wish is that I listened to prior reviews and declined on the timeshare presentation - the worst we have ever attended.
