Overall, we had a wonderful time. I have to start by saying that we went there because my brother has a time share with Club Regina at the Westin Regina Hotel and offered it to us to use. Normally, we don't stay at such high end places. But we took this opportunity when it came. But I'm bringing this point up because although we stayed at the hotel for free, we really couldn't afford to eat there or use some of their special services. For example, even the breakfasts start at like $30. Massages were like $150. Things like that were just not in our budget. So if you're more of a budget traveler, the Westin Regina is not for you.
At the pool my traveling companions ordered 2 bottled waters. It cost $4.50 apiece! Yikes!
So what we did was go to the local supermarket (only 10 minutes away to the east) and bought breakfast foods, snacks, alcohol and bottled water. We also bought food for a meal or two (soup, spaghetti) that we prepared in our room. Saved us a lot. For other meals, we went into town (either Cabo) and ate there. Lots of great places at much more reasonable rates.
As for the rooms, ours were great! The one room had a king sized bed, large bathroom with a big shower, and there was also a jacuzzi. We ended up not using it because it was so hot out. The adjoining room had a sofa bed, but a comfortable one on a platform that pulls out. No bar to digs into your back. There was a bathroom with a shower, a nice balcony with a great view, and a kitchenette with everything. Everything was very clean.
We did have problem with the one toilet, but that can happen anywhere and maintenance came and fixed it.
The employees were all very friendly, especially the golf cart drivers and the desk help. The phone system was a bit irritating. There was Operator, Services, Concierge and a few other choice buttons, but it seemed like whatever one we dialed for a service, it was always the wrong one and we had to be transfered.
We do wish there was better notification of different events. We were going to sign up for their Monday night fiesta night, where there would be food and shows, at a discounted rate for Regina members. But when we went to sign up, we learned that the day was changed because of the Mexican holiday. That's fine, but we were given misinformation on our first day. We also heard about a different special night, but learned about it too late. The only info we had was a little insert in this huge packet we got.
Like everywhere else, the hotel does want its guests to get a club membership or to upgrade the one you already have. We decided to participate in the presentation spiel they give, and receive a free breakfast out of it. I can understand why the breakfast buffets are $30! It was the most phenomenal breakfast I've ever seen!
We did play tennis (brought rackets from home) and that was fun (and free). We were going to play their 9 hole putting green golf but ran out of time. (We spent most of our stay in town doing activities.) Maybe we're wrong, but my 2 companions and I ALL remember seeing a BIG sign for "free golf" at the putting green. (The sign was on the road in front of the parking lot.) But when we went to inquire about it, we were told there was a $5 charge. That's cheap and the money's not the issue. But that sign was obviously misleading. (Or all 3 of us mis-interpreted the sign? Which was in English!) We never did go back to read the sign to see if we or the hotel were right.
Travelers with mobility issues (wheelchairs, crutches, etc.): This hotel might be a problem because everything is spread out and there are lots of hills and stairs. Even the rooms we stayed in had stairs in the rooms. However, there are golf carts that will come to you 24 hours whenever you need a lift anywhere on the property. Just a note in general: Mexico in general is not handicapped-friendly. The sidewalks are bumpy and sometimes end abruptly, sometimes several feet off the pavement.
Travelers with kids: I have to ask why people bring kids to a 4 star resort. And if they choose to, why don't these people keep their kids under better control? Our week there was wonderful, but one day these 2 young kids were shrieking and yelling in the pool. Beautiful resort... overlooking the ocean... very quiet and serene, and the kids wouldn't stop shrieking, and the mother didn't care. Just seems rather rude to me. Nothing wrong with kids being there, but this is a high class resort and parents need to respect that. I'm sure problems can happen at any hotel, not just the Westin.
