“Never a disappointment!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

Every time we return to Cabo, we are sure to stop at El Ciruelo. The restaurant, located at the Grand Regina next to the Westin, provides romantically beautiful views of the ocean and overlooking the pool. The terrace outside the restaurant is a great location to relax and enjoy a before dinner cocktail or an after dinner drink. The menu never disappoints. I love the watermelon salad and sea bass. The calamari, gazpacho and shrimp are excellent as well. The preparation and presentation is a treat to the eyes and the tastebuds. The wine and cocktail list is extensive in order to find the perfect accompaniment to any meal. The staff is friendly, attentive, and willing to help you choose your ideal meal. This is a restaurant not to be missed!

“Beautiful El Ciruelo!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

This restaurant at the Grand Regina is a crown jewel. The menu has a wonderful variety of offerings, giving visitors a beautiful taste of the locally available, freshest ingredients. Some of the dishes we had: gazpacho, watermelon salad, calamari, cornish hen, seabass Veracruz, skirt steak, and lamb osso buco with saffron risotto. Every meal was beautifully prepared and paired with a cool drink and the breathtaking views, this locale can't be beat!

“Wish I hadn't....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013

We were staying at the Westin and decided to make reservations on the property one evening. We arrived a couple minutes early and they told us to sit outside and they would be right with us. I'd give only one star; however, the setting is just amazing. This warrants a star of it's own. After 15 minutes, I began to notice many open tables but the staff was running around like crazy; obviously busy. I felt bad for them but was hungry. I was willing to wait a bit longer. 30 minutes pass and the hunger kicks into moodiness. Not a single person acknowledged we were still waiting outside (or the 3 other couples who were also waiting that long). We decided to leave, as we at least expect somebody to say sorry it will be just a bit longer; but we received nothing. We went down the road to Deckmans, which I reviewed separately, and I thank El Ciruelo for ignoring us because it was some of the best food I have had in awhile!

Given that we had a large food credit at the hotel, we decided to reserve here again the next night. We arrived on time, hoping it was a fluke. We were seated promptly, given menus, and felt genuinely happy that things may be different. Another couple at the hotel told us they serve sorbet as a palate cleanser between courses, which we were looking forward to. We made up our minds it would be a good meal.

Then things got slow again. It took 10 minutes for anybody to get our drink order; at that point we just ordered our meal. From that point on, our water was not refilled, we were not asked if we wanted another glass of wine, etc. The food began to come out. It was not bad (except for one sea bass dish which was way overcooked and dry) but it was also not too good. We left several courses half eaten. And on top of that, we never got the sorbet between courses (though we saw it going to other tables). :(

Service was slow, but I noticed them all husting. It was not that they weren't trying but were highly understaffed. The manager and servers were literally running, sweating, etc. Given that, I understood the poor service. However, at the price of this restaurant (particularly in Mexico) you just expect something at least mediocre. Unfortunately, what we received was less than mediocre with a big bill at the end.

“Great restaurant at Grand Regina”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

I don't think anyone has discovered this great restaurant at the Grand Regina. It is run by the Westin, and in my opinion, a step up from Arricifes. The view is one of the best in Cabo, and rivals Agua in Palmilla. The red snapper that two of us had our first night set a high bar, but the sea bass on the final night was just as good. Our waitress Susie, made each evening very special. She made some great Mexican wine and tequila suggestions, and we just had a great time both nights.

“It's Romantic, Friendly and Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

We ate at this restaurant a few times two years ago when we stayed at the Grand Regina. We liked it then as the food is quite good and the service and setting are outstanding.

When we were just at the Club Regina we ate again at Ciruelo on two evenings. (Cart drivers will take you from Club Regina to El Ciruelo, and Grand Regina cart drivers will take you back.) Once again the food was very good, the service and setting were outstanding. Both nights we shared a nice salad with pears and blue cheese. The first night one of us had fresh fish, great quality, properly prepared and well accompanied. The other had the cornish game hen. It was nicely prepared and accompaniments were very good. The only complaint would be that they only served 1/2 of the game hen, so it was a really small portion....even for this small eater. The second evening, we both had the sea bass catch of the day that was very nicely prepared. Fresh vegetables accompanied the mains. Wine selection is good. They always serve a great amuse bouche and a palate-cleansing sorbet with each meal, but nothing is too fussy. They brought out a very nice birthday dessert for the table. And the maitre d' always comes by to check on everything. There are folks who return regularly.

On one of our two evenings this trip they had a happy hour promotional event for a local jewelry store. They served nice appetizers on the terrace, during one of the most beautiful sunsets. The weather was too cold to sit outside on these two evenings, but when you can it's grand.

We'll happily return.
