“Gorgeous with Great Service, but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2012

...there a few things you should be aware of if you stay here, which may or may not be issues for you, but they were for us:

--The Hilton Los Cabos is about 10-12 miles outside of Cabo San Lucas. This is a plus in that you get a stunningly beautiful, walkable beach that is rarely crowded and a quiet, relaxing surrounding area. It's a problem if you like to party, eat out, and generally prefer a more exciting vacation, as you must either hire an expensive taxi to transport you to town or take the local bus -- which is economical at 17 pesos a ride, but does take longer because of stops, requires crossing a busy street from the hotel, and may not be convenient if you stay out late. Yes, you can rent a car which solves some of these issues, but rentals are expensive and parking in Cabo San Lucas can be difficult and very spendy as well, judging from what I heard from other hotel guests who had rentals.

--Food is an issue.Even with the 20% discount they give time-share guests, the food and drinks at the Hilton Los Cabos in all bars, restaurants, and the Deli are exhorbitantly priced ($14 for a quesadilla!). If like us you are staying in a unit with a partial kitchen (no oven, but there is a stove, microwave, and fridge), you can stock up on eats and alcohol at Wal-Mart, Costco, or Mega and feed yourself, then take a bus or taxi downtown when you prefer to eat out--which is a hassle when you're tired and hungry and just want to tuck into some local fish tacos.

Otherwise, this hotel is absolutely beautiful, with lush, immaculate grounds, beautiful pools and jacuzzis (especially the infinity pool--a picture-perfect spot for vacation bliss) and exceptional service. Rooms are simply but elegantly decorated, beds are extremely comfortable, and maid service is exemplary--they'll drag and position your chairs on the beach, serve you poolside, and even promptly bring you an extra blanket late at night--anything you ask. The concierge is helpful, most of the staff speaks at least some English and were even kind enough to help me practice my very poor Spanish. This resort does seem to host quite a few private events and parties, but it in no way affected our stay save for an evening closure of the smaller pool area on the first day we were there.

While we did stay in the time-share section of this resort, our experience was virtually seamless with that of hotel guests I spoke with at the resort, as all amenities are available to all guests regardless of which "side" they're staying in. Again, I in no way want to diminish the quality of this resort, but be clear on the kind of vacation you want before you book here...almost all activities, shopping, and local restaurants are a 20-30 minute bus ride or expensive taxi away if you opt not to rent a car.

We decided after our last stay, to try the Hilton again over spring break. Although the resort was a lot busier than it was when we were here in July, the service again was excellent. The only thing different was everyone else had stayed at a place where it was required that you get up at 6:00 AM and run down to the pool and reserve a chair with your towel and then not show up til noon to actually claim your chair, but we still had no problems finding available chairs even when we showed up at 10:00 AM. The pool water, however, was a bit chilly - probably because this time of year it does get cooler at night. The restaurants were over and above responding to our requests. We had an appetizer the last time we were here called Queso Fundido and it wasn't on the menu this time. When we asked about it, they said no problems - they could make it. It is made tableside with cheese, chorizo, mushrooms and peppers and served with the fresh tortillas, plus a little fire show that goes along with it! YUM!! Not sure if the staff was happy about it, but then everyone else around us wanted it too! The pool staff is wonderful - showing up before your drink is gone and remembering what you are having and greeting you by name. Jorge is the guy that brings around the little Popsicles in the afternoon - so don't miss him! Rooms and amenities are still very nice and even though the hotel was a lot busier, our room was quiet at night. Overall we were not disappointed and will definitely go back!

Thank you for your lovely review and for coming back a second time! There’s nothing better than being able to go back to a restaurant and eat your favorite dish on the menu, so we’re glad you made the request and it all worked out. Having delicious food on vacation is a must, and something we value at our hotel, along with stellar service. We’ll see you for your third visit soon!

We have stayed at this property on many occasions, and each time it seems to get better. The grounds are spotless and the 180 degree views of the coastline and the Sea of Cortez from our suite were breathtaking. We were there during gray whale migration and we could see them breaching and socializing from the balcony of our suite, a very special treat. The three hotel restaurants are superb, but the higher end Italian themed restaurant located near the infinity pool was a disappointment, both in terms of the quality of the food and the pricing. The only other downside was the bar which is overpriced and blessed with wait staff that have apparently been chosen for their lack of personality.Travel to and from the hotel from the airport is best accomplished (for us) by authorized taxi, not the overpriced limo service from the hotel. The hotel front desk and staff are all very knowledgeable and housekeeping gets an A+ for their efforts. All in all, while the hotel is somewhat on the pricey side, we would not hesitate to recommend it to our friends.

Room Tip: Rooms in the middle of the hotel on the 4th through the 6th floor.

We were very happy with our week at the Hilton Los Cabos, March 2-9. The property is well maintained, our Deluxe Oceanview room was well-appointed and comfortable, and the food at most of the restaurants (though we weren't impressed with Fenicia) was very good. The infinity pool was really nice: it felt as if the pool were an arm of the Sea of Cortez. The location was ideal: only 15 minutes by car from both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. (We rented a car and found that driving, even at night, was easier than in Europe and that other drivers were, by and large, better behaved.) It is quite private (access by a gated side road off the highway and set well back from it) and there was little sign of spring break rowdiness.

The staff was first class: highly efficient, knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Concierge Michel Zermeño merits special kudos. For months before our arrival he corresponded with us at length about our preferences, and he arranged an itinerary of restaurants with live music that more than met our desires. I had mentioned that we would be celebrating my wife's birthday, so he surprised us by arranging for an iced bottle of champagne and a birthday cake with candle in our room the first night; on the second night we again had champagne and a cake, and in addition the bed was festooned with balloons. Michel told all the maitre d's at the restaurants he booked that it was her birthday and requested that they seat us close to the music...which they did.

We don't hesitate to recommend the Hilton Los Cabos for couples or family vacations.

My boyfriend and I spent 8 nights at the Hilton Los Cabos ending Friday, March 16, 2012. We were both extremely impressed with the facility and the staff. And the biggest thing for me is that they provided early complimentary coffee and pastries in the lobby until 7:00 AM when breakfast starts. Not sure what time exactly they put it out but it’s by 5:30 at least!

Rooms/Resort – We stayed in a Junior Suite on the sixth floor (thanks to reviews here) and loved it. The room was clean, the views were amazing, it was fairly quiet without neighbors until the last couple days of the trip. The housekeeping staff kept the room very tidy around all our stuff. We were able to watch the sunrise, whale watch (bringing small binoculars would help with this) and entertain ourselves watching the early morning chair saving at the pool.

Service – The service was especially good everywhere around the resort. We have to give a shout out to Hernon on the beach who really hustled. Not only was he incredibly accommodating but he was pleasant while attending to our every need. Waiters at breakfast very patiently helped up practice our Spanish.

Spa – I had a facial and reflexology with Monica which was heaven. It was the best facial I’ve ever had and the reflexology put me to sleep which has never happened to me. My boyfriend and I had a couple’s sports massage which was also great. Unfortunately I don’t remember the names of each massage therapist but both were excellent. Also, while not large the facility is beautiful, clean and very well staffed with a steam room, Jacuzzi spa, showers, bath, etc. The waiting room and the private terrace for pre/post massage relaxing are beautiful.

Restaurants – food throughout the resort is wonderful starting with the buffet breakfast. And while the prices are not inexpensive being from the NYC metropolitan area it’s nothing out of the ordinary for us.

Rental Car – National desk in the Hilton. Got the car there and returned it there as well. Service was good, car was good and the road to Todos Santos, well that has to be experienced before the construction is complete.

Golf – Questro Golf rep is on-site at the Hilton as well (right next to the National desk). Took the two round deal for Cabo Real & Puerto Los Cabos and both were nice to play. Puerto was the nicer of the two I thought. I forget the gal’s name at the desk but she was very nice to deal with. Should have taken the deal to play all three of Questro’s courses but opted to play Palmilla and was a bit disappointed with that choice. Not in as good condition as the other two and the scenery wasn’t as good either. Put the most expensive green fee of the three on top of that and I would say a thumbs down to Palmilla.

Horseback Riding – there are horses (really ponies) on the beach who look pretty fatigued all the time and we felt bad for them having to bake on the beach all day. We opted to ride horses at the Cuadra San Francisco Equestrian Center owned by Fransisco (Paco) Berrena. This place is the real deal. If you are a horse lover or just like to ride on vacations, you’ll want to ride here. It’s about a quarter mile down the road from the Hilton and has trail rides,a ring, stables and animals all over. We booked a 1 hour dessert ride for $60/person with our caballero, Victor. They offer beach, dessert and two hour canyon rides. You can elect to ride both, desert and beach, ride as long as you want, etc., very customizable. And we were treated to Paco himself checking us in and patiently answering all the questions we asked about his operation and history. He’s a character and quite an animal lover. Check out the website: http://www.loscaboshorses.com.

Also, because we rented a car we were able to take a trip to Todos Santos (fabulous Colonial town), explore the golf courses, get to the grocery store and have our laundry done at the Eco-Friendly Lavamiatica Lavendaria (on the way to San Jose). The owner, Pilar, gave us a couple of great recommendations for local restaurants; the Taquerilla Mexicana on Manuel Doblado for the Pastor tacos, and Los Claros at the end of that street on the Boulevard Mijares for the smoked Marlin tacos. Both excellent local fare with friendly staff.
If possible, get away from the resort and sample the local flavor too.

They are so heavenly and will loosen every muscle in your body, leaving you the most relaxed you’ve ever felt. Glad you enjoyed the delicious food as well. Whenever you guys decide to return to Cabo be sure and keep us in mind! Perhaps a weekend getaway or….future honeymoon?

I used Tripadvisor a lot in planning our trip. Rather than list all of the excellent points, I will try to stick with the highlights along with any negatives (really, there were few).

We stayed Mar 15-24 with 2 children. We felt very safe at the hotel and in Los Cabos. All of the comments re: how beautiful the hotel/beach are, are correct. We had a King Premier Suite (one bedroom, plus very large sitting room - put cots in there for kids, there was a large sofa plus dining room table and there was still a lot of room to move around). Had 2 bathrooms and they were huge. More storage/closets than we could use.

We stayed in the building by the smaller pool (I think this is the timeshare portion) on the 2nd floor (2011). At first I was disappointed that we did not have a higher floor as I know that gives a better view. The hotel offered to move us once a room was free (3 days later). After a day I told them that we were happy to stay. First, the room opened up onto a green space where my kids could pass a ball around. Second, we liked the smaller pool much better - quieter, loungers easier to access, service was excellent, plus it is right beside the fitness centre, parking lot close and easy to get to the beach. We had no noise concerns, the housekeeping was great, the staff is excellent, concierge responsive. Really, this hotel is excellent.

We did experience a problem with lunch one day - it was minor - but the manager called and took the lunch off the bill. Very good customer relations.

I took the kids horseback riding on the beach. The stand is right on the beach in front of the hotel. I didn't negotiate (it was early in the trip and I wasn't prepared!) $120 plus a tip. Was ok but I wouldn't have done it if the kids weren't interested. My husband took the kids on a zipline tour with Cabo Adventures - it was a highlight and he felt very safe with them. We rented a glass bottom boat one day (3 hours - $1800 pesos) and chased whales/went past the Arch - again - felt very safe.

We rented a car from Antonio at Cactus (Tripadvisor recommendation). He made it very easy and I highly recommend using him. You email for the reservation, he has someone waiting outside the airport for you and then they take you in a shuttle two minutes away to get the car. Good prices and he was very fair to deal with. One thing I was grateful for was his very explicit instructions to ignore the people inside the airport who descend upon you once you get through customs. They will tell you anything to get you to do a time share presentation. One guy almost had me convinced he was with Cactus and I had to get on his shuttle - I'm glad Antonio told me to ignore these guys and just keep going until we saw a sign with our name. Based on Tripadvisor stories, we could have been on our way to a time share and lost 3 hours!

No problems driving anywhere - we went between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose with ease. Concierge helps with directions. Never felt uncomfortable walking at night with our kids.

Had a phenomenal dinner at Agua at The One and Only Palmilla - it was $500 but worth it. Ate at La Golondrina - it is very pretty and maybe a bit touristy but we enjoyed it (not hokey like the fiesta parties at other places. Los Tres Gallos was very authentic and the staff were lovely. La Dolce (San Jose) was good. Don Sanchos (San Jose) - ok. Ate once at hotel - Fenecia - was good. The one disappointing dinner was Sunset da Mona Lisa. The view was the most beautiful I have ever seen at a restaurant, but our server was sullen and the dinner took 3 hours. Both of my kids fell asleep. Probably shouldn't have taken them.

I was very pleased with the hotel and with Cabo - would return to both in a heartbeat.

Thank you for this terrific review. Great details all around. I’m especially happy to hear that you were able to experience so many of the fun excursions offered in Los Cabos. The zipline tour by our friends at Cabo Adventures is always incredible. It’s just too bad your husband and the kids got to have all the fun on that one. Thanks again for this review. We hope to see you and the family again.
