“Honeymoon at the Melia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2009

My Husband and I spent a week at the Melia for our Honeymoon. We read all of the reviews for months before we decided on the Melia. We decided to ignore the negative reviews, because let's face it--some people are never happy. We made the right decision; the Melia was a great for price!

The Room- We upgraded our room to an M Experience Beach Front room, and it was worth it. You will be doing a lot of walking since the resort is spread out, but we found that we needed to walk around after over eating at the buffets. The bed was a little hard, but we had the foam pad added right away, and it worked just fine.

The Food- We are both picky eaters, but found that there was always something that we liked on the buffet and from room service. The omelet bar was awesome every morning! Order a chicken and cheese quesadilla from room service, they were wonderful!

The Bars- The drinks were great, they served top shelf liquor. We are young (I’m 29 and the husbands 31), and found that the bar closing at 1am in the lobby was never an issue.

The Beach- The beach was immaculate, the grounds of the hotel were constantly being groomed.

The Activities- We took part in most of the activities at the hotel. Water volleyball was fun, Casino Night & the Mexican Fiesta were great too!! As far as snorkeling, scuba diving, those activities should be purchased in town and not at the hotel, you can save money that way.

The Staff- The staff was wonderful. We tipped often, they deserve it. They work all day and night long to make you comfortable.

The Hotel- The Melia was really nice and it was very well taken care of. It was a bit modern and the lounge was a really comfy place to relax after a day of shopping in town. The pool is really nice, and the hot tub really relaxing.

Location- We loved that we were situated between Cabo San Lucas & San Jose and visited both cities. Cabo was a fun place to drink, shop, or take a charter out to fish. San Jose was the perfect sleepy little town to shop without hassle. We used the city busses several times, and it cost anywhere from $1 to $4 a person, depending on the time of day and where you got on. We also learned that with taxis; pay in pesos because it will save you a few dollars.

Things you have to see or do—Definitely go out on a boat. We took a private fishing charter out of Cabo San Lucas, and got to see the Arch, Sea Lions, and even whales! Eat at Gordo Lele’s Taco Stand in Cabo San Lucas, it’s a tiny little place with AMAZING tacos!! Visit San Jose, it’s not Cabo, but it’s a beautiful quiet town to walk around we ended up having just as much fun! Drink a waborita at Cabo Wabo, they were dangerously good! Do take the time to walk the beach at Sunset, it’s so pretty!! Take tons of sunscreen with you, we went through at least two full bottles!

We will definitely visit the Melia again in the future. We made lots of friends at the Melia! We great start to our married life together. It was a perfect spot for two active Honeymooners!

We stayed at the Melia Cabo Real from March 28 to April 4 and had such a wonderful time. It was so relaxing. We had great weather all week, although quite windy the first 2 days. Ocean temperature was a bit on the cool side (app. 74°F), but it was refreshing. The sand is coarse, but manageable even barefoot. I agree with other reviews that there were not enough chairs on the beach.

The food was great! Plentiful and fantastic selection all around, from the buffet to the à la carte restaurants. You can always find something you like. We were impressed by the great service we received! They went above and beyond at every turn, much like the service we received at resorts in Cuba.

The property was beautiful. Incredibly well groomed and comfortable (beds on the beach and by the pool were fantastic!). The rooms were also fabulous. We were blessed to have a large room with ocean view. We saw whales every day from our balcony. What a treat.

We want to personally thank Patty, our rep from Air Canada, who helped us organize excursions to Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. She was always available and happy to help. What a great lady.

My husband went golfing at the Cabo Real golf course and had a wonderful time. Superior quality course, great service. Taxi cab to and from the golf course was paid by hotel.

We had a great time on our visit to Los Arcos, Lover's beach and Medano beach. Had lunch at The Office...expensive but worth it, for the experience.

We will certainly go back again and would recommed it to anyone.

This hotel was fantastic from the minute we rolled up to the beautiful property and they quickly rushed to get us some margaritas. The staff were great, the grounds were beautiful, and the food was great as well. and the booze is always good.

There really is nothing negative to say about MCR. This place would be good for anyone. Familys, Couples, Old, Young, single.

Will definitely go back again.

Just returned from Los Cabos in the Baja. the Melia Cabo Real was the best yet. Clean, staff is courteous, quick service, great food, great ocean view - saw whales and stingrays jumping out of the ocean. Weather was perfect 65-70F in AM warmed to 83-86 in the afternoon and early evening. Not a place for children - we did see infants and toddlers - none any older. This is more of an adult place and so be it. The hotel provides transportation into Cabo which is great, there is local bus transport into Cabo and to San Jose; taxi ride is also available and affordable. The Pool at Melia is great and very clean with a swim up bar. We'd go back in a minute - I can't say a bad word about the resort.

I just came back from Melia Cabo Real and would definitely go back again for the price we paid. What I see is that ever reviewer is consistent with what I observed in great, friendly service, clean and beautiful rooms, and the food was good. Now for the inside info...

Food: There are only four restaurants but not every one is open everyday. The Japanese restaurant (Kujira) and the Mediterranean restaurants (La Terraza) are always open for dinner only and I strongly make reservations the day you check in. The third restaurant is the Mexican restaurant (La Quetzal) and is only open for dinner when the all-purpose buffet restaurant (La Palapa) is closed. So, you only have three restaurants available every evening. We received two tickets to make reservations for the two restaurants which only means that we can only dine in each only once during our stay. As far as breakfast and lunch goes, you only have one choice, La Palapa. La Palapa has great scenery and food is like any other but on our last day there was a live band performing. The Kujira has small portions so feel free to order more than one entree. The snack bar (El Mirador) has the best beef tacos on the property. Tip: reserve the two restaurants on days when there's no theme nights and reserve at 8 or 830 pm so you can go to the night activities.

Bar: The lobby bar is only open in the evenings. The bar at the beach is open in the afternoon. The bars have great selection and the drinks were really good. There are several waitresses always bringing you drinks. I never waited over 15 seconds to get service. The sad thing is that all the bars have a tip jar despite the fact that tips are included in the all-inclusive resort.

Entertainment: The resort didn't put much effort here. The pool side activities were juvenile. In the evening,t hey had a karaoke night which was a lot of fun. Then the Mexican theme night was really good. Instead of having the theme night/dinner on the beach, they had it in the lobby and then they had stage performers and a mariachi band were really good but very small production. They canceled the Brazillian night and had a DJ which no one showed up to. They had a casino night, two blackjack tables and two roullette tables which lasted for about an hour. While the theme party/dinner was a small production in the lobby, next door the Hilton had a massive theme night on the beach. All the Melia guests were jealously looking at the live band, stage lights, the tiki torches, and the party that was going on. Don't get me wrong, the Melia's theme nights were fun but not much effort were put into them. Tip: Get to the entertainment nights when it starts, the party is over in a few hours. These nights are located at the lobby lounge which is limited in seating.

Room: We had the garden view room. It had a great view of the palm trees, the plaza, and the pool. Despite being relatively close to the pool, the room was quiet and we had a partial view of the ocean. The room key failed to operate most evenings. The room was very clean and the refrigerator was stocked with Nestle bottle water, Coke, Sprite, and Tecate beer. There is no comforter for your bed. The safe is easy to use. The TV only has one English channel, FOX news. Tip: Get a room at the lower levels by the pool. This way, you don't have to climb stairs to the lobby for the two dinner restaurants and you have easy access to the pool, beach, and La Palapa.

Pool: The pool is very beautiful and large. There were plenty of pool chairs. If you wanted a chair on the edge of the pool, they are usually taken after 10 am. Tip: "reserve" a chair as you go to breakfast. The section of the pool closer to the lobby is quieter. And, don't miss the zip line although it was a 5 second ride.

The beach: The beach is not really functional. It hurts your feet to walk on the sand (more like aquarium gravel). The sand is not really clear of plants and debris. There are limited chairs and only three hammocks. There's not snack bar at the beach. Tip: "reserve" a hammock at the beach by 9am. It's a good place to relax and sun bath. Also, there's hardly anyone using the bar at the beach.

Shopping: The lobby store has limited items and the price is above average. All the silver jewelry in Cabo are pretty much from the same manufacturer. The vendors at the beach were polite and their stuff is cheap. Example, we got a bracelet for $10 and we saw the same thing for $20 at other places. Some vendors come to the theme nights and the prices were reasonable. The best place to buy souvenirs is at the Le Best store at the Puerto Paraiso mall at Cabo San Lucas. Everything were at least 50% cheaper. Tip: reserve a Cabo San Lucas city tour with the hotel. It's free. After the free museum and glass factory, you are free to do whatever you want. Pickup/drop-off times are 10am 2pm and 6pm (20 minute ride in a tour bus). Don't forget to pick up a Cabo map at the museum.

Excursions: The excursion was expensive. There's only a jet ski rental at the beach but most days it was not open. There's no parasailing available. You can rent boogie boards and snorkel items at the hotel for free but the conditions were not ideal. There's a guy who has a hang glider with a attached motor who offers a 15 minute rides for $100. Tip: Go to the marina at Cabo San Lucas and there are a lot of excursion vendors there who can offer any type of excursions for a reasonable price.

All in all, I had a good time at the clean spacious pool and relaxing at the beach hammock. The food was good but limited restaurants. Theme nights were disappointing and like the evening entertainments, it was low cost and low production relative to the neighboring Hilton. The rooms were clean and functional and the staff was outstanding. In terms of the view, pool, rooms, bar, and service, you won't be disappointed.

The Melia staff strives hard to be friendly, polite, courteous and accomodating.. and they do a good job at it.

Garden View room, nice partial view of the ocean. Very clean room, plenty of towels, well stocked mini bar, good water pressure. Resort was large enough that there was plenty of space for everyone yet small enough to feel cozy - not a mega resort, quite comfortable. Prompt daily service.

Location - it's not on a swimmable beach. If you want to stay at the resort and just relax, swim in the pool it's perfect. If you must swim in the ocean, (the Medano beach) you'd have to drive 15 minutes or so... thats where all of the action is. In that case you would need a car which you can get in the lobby. If you stay closer to the Medano or Niki beach you'll probably have more noise later into the night...

Staff - friendly, polite, helpful, pleasant, not imposing.. toward the end of your stay they feel like family.

Activites are low pressure but constant and diverse, cooking classes, yoga, water polo, etc, etc... We went to the gym at appx 9am and it was closed. Bummer.

Food - something for everyone, nothing extremely fancy but nice. Two restaurants, one serving Sushi, the other serving pastas, both were OK - not gourmet, quite basic but just fine for an all inclusive.

Misc Info:

Town - very safe. A lot of vendors, a happy place, marina is a nice place to dine, shop, hang out, take a sunset cruise. Vendors on the beach are a little pushy but are fine when you tell them no.

Airport. Easy. You will be approached by time share sales people offering stuff in exchange for your time. I took them up on the offer - got a free ride to the Melia from the airport ($65) , spent 2 hours with them the next day and got two wave runner rentals and a return arrangement to the airport ($165) so for my two hours I got about $230 dollars worth. Very boring but the drivers were safe, nice locals... the guy even stopped at the pharmacy for me. I took another tour (after learning I can get something out of it) and for my 3 hours on that one I got 2 atv rentals ($190), 2 sunset cruise tickets ($100), 2 wave runner rentals ($100). If you get up early and have time to waste, it's worth it. I'm cheap.
The people at the Melia will try to discourage you from going on tours. Tell them you are going to church.

Cellphones. Don't use your USA phone unless you know what it will cost. Getting a sim card there was a drag. The card has to be activated after presenting your ID (passport) and them faxing it to Tijuana. They activate after Corp says its ok. Unless you can stand there all day, you might leave and never know if your phone got activated. Mine did, but on the last day of my stay. Buy a calling card (comfi.com). I got 720 minutes for 20 bucks. I'm home and still have 700 minutes. That was with Telcel. I don't recommend it.

Internet- $10.35 per hour. INSANE.

Cabo is a beautiful place. The Pacific is rough, the beers are cold and 2 for 1 everyday. All day.

Catcus tour was awesome. ATV in the desert.

My husband and I traveled here with our 3 1/2 year old and 6 month old. I had three requirements for our vacation. Swim up bar, kids club, and by the beach. This was our first time at an all inclusive and I can't wait until we can go back!

First, the kids club. I never see anyone talk about it so here is my review. I was very hesitant about leaving my children at first, not knowing what to expect. All I have to say is LOVED IT. My older child had a great time. They have plenty of toys, video games, a keyboard and all kinds of activities. The staff, especially Martha, were awesome! In the back they had cribs for the babies. It was very clean and quiet for nap times. It was so cute after a few days all the kids staying there knew each others names. I would see some of the club employees with small groups of kids either taking them to the snack bar or to the pool, and even the beach(within resort property lines) to watch the volleyball game. We did reserve a babysitter one night for a few hours, sort of expensive but Abigail was very sweet and my son still talks about her.

The other high reviews are spot on, so won't repeat it all again, except we think the food was very good. Especially breakfast...what more could you want? The omelets were the best I have ever had.
