Just got back from a week at Melia Cabo Real... It was our first stay there, but won't be our last! It's distance from town mean it is probably not the best spot for those looking to party, but it is a gem if you want some quiet time or have young kids!
My wife and I were able to enjoy a little quiet time by the pool thanks to an OUTSTANDING Kids Club. Our 3 and 5 year old boys loved spending time there. The facility was clean and safe, and I can't say enough about how great Angelica, Marisol and Stephanie were to our boys! Raul and Adrian from the Activities Team always had fun games for the kids as well.
My only recommendation: It would be great if there were benches near the playground so we had somewhere to sit while we watched the kids.
I'm a little confused by some of the negative reviews... For the price my wife and I thought the stay was very good. The resort is older (plaque in lobby states it opened in 1990), but it is in good shape. One caveat: the facilities are spread out, and there are no accessible elevators and quite a few stairs. I think any significant mobility issue would make this a difficult place to stay.
We had a nice garden view room (3105), which I gather is one of the ones that was recently renovated. The beds were a little hard, but toppers were available if you asked. The rooms were quiet, and we weren't bothered even though the heating/AC system is quite loud. Housekeeping was very good, and we saw no bugs, lizards or other creepy-crawlies that frequent tropical climes.
The food was on par with any of the many other all-inclusives I have stayed at... There was a decent variety, and plenty of food was available. The two barbecue nights at La Palapa (main buffet restaurant) offered tasty Mexican-style BBQ, though those expecting their "regular" may not like the arrachara, chorizo, and chili chicken. The a la carte restaurants were good: I agree that Kujira (the Asian spot) was the best. Food from the snack bar was acceptable, though I must say the chips, guacamole and mexican salsa were very good!
Bar staff were friendly, and I rarely had to wait for a drink. I agree with other reviews that knock the red wine, but without buying my own I have never had good "vino tinto" at ANY of the AI resorts I have stayed at, even legitimate 5 stars.
The pool and hot tub were great, though they were cold the first few days. Apparently this was partly due to unseasonably cold weather, but they were MUCH warmer after a few complaints to Management. The beach was great, and apparently it is the only safe swimming beach in Cabo. That said, there is still a LOT of tidal action, and it is not safe for children without adults right there with them in the water.
Overall we found that staff were very friendly and helpful. A few smiles and a little attempted Spanish really went a long way!
Overall this was a fantastic stay, especially for the price. We will go back!
