“Highway Robbery”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2006

The property is absolutely beautiful. The rooms are very well appointed and the resort offers many 'perk's (IPODS by the pool); however, the prices for alcohol are astronomical - insulting, in fact. Think $150 for a normally $30 bottle of champagne, $33 per glass of wine, $48 for a margarita....etc etc. By the end of our trip, as much as we loved the grounds and appreciated the service (which was, as most here have commented, inconsistent), we were ready to leave only because we were tired of getting gouged . I do not plan to return.

  • Liked — beauty of the grounds, nice rooms
  • Disliked — in-your-face prices for food and drink
  • Tips/Secrets — don't assume that normal 100% food and beverage markup holds, it's more like 500% markup

what a gorgeous resort with the most amazing service and food. it is expensive but the food and rooms iare worth it. the landscaping and grounds of the hotel are stunning. i actually went with 2 of my best friends (husbands were home with the kids) it is pretty much a honeymoon type resort that shuts down early. so if your single or looking to dance all night wrong resort. we were there to read books, drink margaritas and not worry about carpool. truely the most amazing and relaxing 4 day vacation i have ever had. just stay away from the town of cabo it is like spring break.
how ever the colonial town of san jose del cabo is magical. we had a great dinner there. i can't wait to go back with my husband, oh yeah leave the kids at home unless you want to ruin it for everyone else!

wow, 2nd trip , already working on the 3rd, upgraded to 1400 sq. ft. luxury suite w/ a bottle of cold dom perion in the bucket. what can they do next. Met Charlie Trotter and got to taste his new spa menu and watch him cook as well. Golf course was in excellent shape.
Enjoyed all the T & L activities such as wine and tequila tastings.
Great time good memories look forward to next trip

My wife and I stayed at the One and Only in early October for our honeymoon for 10 days. We came in with very high expectations (she's in the high-end hotel business, and knows the difference between good and truly exceptional service), and our expectations were blown away in every way. The attention to detail and efficiency of the service was really unbelievable. We decided that there must be 10 hotel employees to every hotel guest given the quality of service. Our room was excellent - an oceanfront room with a patio and daybed. It was larger than we had expected and was elegantly appointed.

We read some negative reviews on Trip Advisor, which generally argued that the resort is too expensive or that the service isn't up to snuff. On the issue of what it costs - YES, this is a darned expensive place to stay. However, you shouldn't be staying here unless you can do so without sweating the bucks. What else is a vacation supposed to be about? Apples to apples, the service, luxurious rooms, and quality of food made it worth it. Finally, many reviews complained about the butler service. We found our butlers to be on it all the time. We got around the tipping issue by telling 'em that we would tip at the end of our stay to make things easy. We tipped something like $50 for each at the end of the stay, and got excellent service all through our stay.

The small things made all the difference on our trip: personalized menus when we ate at the restaurants; a selection of in room cocktail snacks ready for us when we'd get back from the pool in the afternoon; leftover wine from the night before waiting for us in a fresh bucket of ice without asking for it, etc. etc.

Don't waste your time going into town. Do the floating day bed, and ESPECIALLY do the "dinner on the beach". It was the best part of the trip.

One & Only Palmilla is a fabulous resort. We loved our room, ocean view, and porch and found the entire resort to be beautiful and the service was amazing (despite the fact that one of our butlers was stoned out of his mind when he introduced himself to us).

As noted by some other people, the spa services were not terribly impressive, but I have found that to be the case at all of the Cabo resorts. You really go for the beach/pool/sun romance of the place.

We loved the food and highly recommend this resort - it is absolutely a five star resort that does everything right. If we return to Cabo - we would definitely stay here again (and we have been there several times and stayed at both Las Ventanas & Esperanza).

The grounds are so lush and well manicured. The water is clear and the hotel very secluded. The hotel staff was wonderful with only a minor mess up at the spa when they failed to check me in and didn't get the service. They offered to make it up and gave my husband a free service.
The food is very good, but very, very expensive. A breakfast cost $60.00 every morning and lunch was the same.

Tip, take a taxi to the hotel and save yourself $100 plus to use on food. the taxis are very nice and cost $50.00 max while the hotel will charge you $130.00. They did charge us the night before we left for a ride to the airport and we had to have removed from bill as we had arranged for a taxi already. Nothing is perfect.

I would go here instead of Hawaii again as it is much closer and just as lush. Can't wait to go back.

This was our 4th visit to One&Only Palmilla and for us, it gets better with every visit. Our room a Terrace, Jr. suite showed little wear and tear since our first visit (fall 2003?). The room was spotlessly clean and well stocked. Many other reviewers comment on in depth details of the property so I will not do that here. I'll list a few pointers that made our trip special. C restaurant...we had eaten at the restaraunt for dinner on our first trip and were not impressed. On this trip the meal was much better as was the service. The new spa menu at C lists some delicious breakfast items (tropical fruit and yogurt stupendous) as well. Butler service - can be unpredictable. I have found that extra tipping goes a long way ($20 per butler per day and also tips for housekeeping/turndown). Also, I communicated with the butler either in person or with notes every day to tell the butlers what our schedule would be so that maid service was done by the time that we returned from the pool, turndown was completed by the time that we returned from dinner. Woule be interested to hear if others tip extra and if so, how much? We ate in San Jose (out of the resort) quite a bit on this trip. In the resort, Agua dinner was very good and if you like Mexican breakfasts, there are many excellent dishes at Agua for breakfast. The pool butlers/staff was fantastic as always. If we wanted peace and quiet, we went to the beach early (9 am) and secured a cabana. The pools can be crowded and noise levels at the pools are unpredictable so the beach was a nice haven away from the other guests. We used the gym almost every day and were happy with that. The spa services are pretty good, but I am not a spa afficionado and may not be the best judge when it comes to quality of technicians. I had the Aztec wrap which I liked.

We had bought duty free liquor on our connecting flight from Dallas and it was nice to have drinks in the room (and not pay a fortune for them) before heading out for dinner. Cabs into San Jose are approx. $13 each way. We ate at Don Emiliano in San Jose (bean soup, Duck Tostaditas, the stuffed chile with shrimp and goat cheese and scallop salad were all excellent). Angel, the host is most gracious and interesting. Nick-San a sushi/Japanese/Asian restaurant is at Las Tiendas de Palmilla and was also excellent.
One tip - if you take a taxi to the airport, make sure to tell the valets to direct the taxi driver to take the airport road and be prepared to pay the toll. Our taxi driver took us through San Jose (lots of stop lights), the cab fare is higher and the trip takes longer. Leave yourself PLENTY of time to get through the airport on a weekend! We learned at the end of our trip that the the driving force behind the One&Only resorts, Howard (Butch) Kerzner was tragically killed in a helicopter crash just after we had arrived at the resort. The One&Only resorts we have visited are a step above every other vacation destination a tribute I'm sure to Mr. Kerzner. We have been told by locals unaffiliated with One&Only that Las Ventanas and Esperanza both have a more stuffy/staid atmosphere. We like the friendliness and helpfullness of the staff at One&Only and cannot recommend the resort enough.

  • Liked — Gorgeous setting/atttentiveness of staff
  • Disliked — Pools are too crowded and loud
