We decided to visit Cabo in January because we were celebrating my husbands 50th and he wanted to go somewhere that had good whale watching. From Dec-March in Cabo is the season for the southernmost migration of grey, humpback and other whales. I have a friend who stayed at the One & Only Palmilla last January and said she saw many whales just from the room patios. So this seemed like the place to go since the resort also met our requirements for luxury.
The hotel was amazing. We used a local Cabo company called Contact Tours to give us a private round trip transfers from the airport ($85 round trip large clean suburban) . Our travel agent set this up. We could of used the complementary transfers the one and only provides but we were unsure if we would be at mercy of other travelers and their flight schedules since the pickup is a van. The one and only also offers $250 private transfers in a hummer. This would be the option for folks not concerned about budgets. ** Very important when exiting airport do not speak to anyone until you get outside. For first time visitors like us it is very easy to listen to the men standing near the exit and take their advice and get in a car this would lead you to a time share demonstration and could last hours. They tried very hard to get us confused. When you exit the building is when you see all the legitimate drivers and hotel companies waiting to retrieve you).
When we arrived at the hotel we were given a welcome frozen fruit bar and taken directly to room. They had a cake and balloons for my husbands 50th and a welcome decanter of tequila with limes and salt. The entire ocean front suite was beautiful, great unobstructed view on patio (one of best yet for us on all ocean vacations), wonderful bed, great bathroom and den area. We were treated like celebs. Every room has a nesspresso machine with plenty of pods. We love coffee! We had espresso every morning on our patio watching the sunrise and the whales. We had breakfast in both restaurants. The restaurant coffee is also a mexican coffee and is quite delicious. The breakfast in both is your choice of continental buffet $24 (fruit, juice, coffee, pastries, yogurt, granola), continental plus more food buffet $28 (addition of cheeses, meats, salmon, etc) and ability to add any full menu item for $8 more (anything on menu) many choices were regional favorites but some were standard breakfasts. Everything was excellent no complaints, Delicious!!!. We had great days at the pool or beach. One highlight was the complementary foot massage provided at the adult pool. You must go and sign up daily at 9:30 am for the service or it will fill up. It was awesome!! Just bring some money for tipping the masseuse.
We were able to see whales from any location on the property pretty much. They are out there hopping around and spouting you just gotta look. We saw a momma humback breach several times and her little baby would breach right beside her like she was teaching it. Adorable!!! The beach by adult pool is not swimmable lots of large rocks.
One thing I really liked about the resort is the fact that it was kind of divided in half. One half for adults and one half for families. I wish more luxury resorts would do this. Especially for people like us who do not want screaming children in our presence, especially when you are paying this kind of money. The adult pool was large and the family pool was much larger. Both areas are equally fabulous. We had snacks at beach, chips and guac/salsa. We had lunch one day at pool restaurant, fish tacos which another reviewer recommended. They were delicious and the sauces were so different than any i have had on mexican food, and my margarita there was very strong (loved it). I also tried a serrano pepper spicy margarita down at the beach one day which was also great. The butler room service provided fruits, nuts, cheeses and olives everyday in room. This was a nice touch since we did not eat much lunch. For dinners we had all the restaurants, Aqua (more regional type latin dishes), Market (variety of options grilled fish choices, tuna rolls, wood fired pizzas) and Suviche (ceviches and sushis, table grilled seafood) all restaurants were excellent. Please be advised the dinners ranged about $200 nightly and we are not big drinkers. We were expecting food to be expensive. Nightly turn down service was also very detailed and greatly appreciated. The little lady who was our nightly turndown girl in the tres palmas building deserves praise. She was such a hard worker and sooo friendly. We took two separate whale watching excursions and I will review each separately if anybody is interested. All in all, we could not of asked for more. We enjoyed every minute. Beautiful, exclusive, highly maintained property.
Some rooms had patios which were more shaded than others so this could be a factor for some.
