I did lots of research on Cabo hotels before selecting this one (mainly because of a really good deal I got). It was more beautiful and lush than I had ever imagined. The pool areas were also top notch and very clean. Everything looked like a postcard!
Upon arrival we were treated to a welcome margarita and a tour of the grounds. They were much more lush than I thought--lots of flowers, grass, trees, birds. The place was very quiet (it was midmorning) even though we were told the hotel was at full capacity. The hotel controls a remarkably large expanse of beach. It is easy to feel like you are on your own private beach, even when you are at the waters edge right in front of the hotel!
Our room was very clean and exactly like the picture on the website. In fact, we decided that our room had to be the very room pictured in their ads (we stayed in the Villa Del Mar building). I reserved an ocean view room, but was upgraded to an ocean front in order to get us a king bedroom immediately. We checked in around 11am, way before check in time, and we checked out very late, around 4pm. Both times they accomodated us perfectly. The rooms didn't look that plush to me on the website, but they are actually much more comfortable and attractive in person. Marble floors, large bathrooms. The patio was huge and had comfortable chairs that we sat in often. We fully faced an unused portion of the beach and, at night, thousands of stars.
We hardly left the hotel except for a dinner or two (Da Giorgio is fabulous for sunsets), so we had a lot of experience with room service, the restaurant, and the beach club and pool bar. We loved the restaurant (there's only one except the outdoor Beach Club). There were always plenty of tables, and the service and food were good. Mainly, though, we loved the atmosphere. We would just sit and stare out over the pool at the beach and the landscaping. It was gorgeous, and all visible from the restaurant patio where we always ate. The Beach Club is great as well. Great food in large portions. You can be served at tables or at your lounge chair. The drinks are great too, made with real fruit.
I found the prices very reasonable compared to what I expected ($11-20 for an entree at the Beach Club; $23 weekend brunch buffet at the main restaurant; $8 glasses of wine with dinner). The water does get expensive once you use up the free bottles in the room; half a liter for $5 is what they charge by the pool. Taxi to the airport was $30; to Cabo was $23, to San Jose del Cabo was $15.
I was worried about the pool chairs, upon reading some of these posts, but found them perfectly comfortable and new looking. We walked to Ventanas one day, and the ones they had on the beach, though they had thick white padding, look dirty and sweaty and used. I prefer the waterproof plastic netting that ours were made of. The staff came up and lay down two thick towels everytime I approached a pool chair. They offered regularly to bring drinks and food. The service was great--relaxed and friendly, but not overbearing.
Another great thing about this hotel was the other guests. Casa del Mar is not trendy. It's classic, relaxing, and offers friendly Mexican hospitality. It is not full of flashy young hipsters or demanding, showy businessmen. I appreciated this, as I was not distracted at all by the people around me. There were only a handful of children, and they of course remained in their designated area.
We had a great experience at the spa--we had a couples massage at the beach palapa. It was very relaxing; the spa facility was good, although the locker rooms were not very expansive. The service was great though.
I would also add that the grounds are very well secured; the guards even took the names of taxi drivers whenever we came and went. Also, we had a small medical issue develop on the trip (not the result of anything we encountered in Mexico), and the concierge put us immediately on the phone with an English speaking doctor. He prescribed antibiotics and pain relievers, which were delivered within an hour. Total cost for doctor consultation and drugs was $120. We were astounded.
My boyfriend, who has stayed at top hotels around the world, declared this the perfect hotel. Absolute perfect blend of service, privacy, and beauty. Though we love to travel and see new places, it is hard to try something new when we have found a place we know we love, as we did here. We will return, perhaps with other family members. I have already recommended this hotel to friends. I would venture to say it's the best bang for your buck that you can find in Cabo.
