“In need of maintenance!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at this hotel 2010 and found it to be a good value under a different name. We returned in 2013. We have spent the last few days here and have formed a different opionion. The hotel is needing a facelift. There is peeling paint, cracked walls, and pitted concrete. I would classify this as a budget hotel. Wait staff is not eager to help. In fact 50% of our meals were without staff. Staff is eager to say they don't speak English. I've never experienced this is my 8 visits to Mexico. Food was below average and only one restaurant was open at a time. I wish I would have listened to the negative reviews because they were spot on. Dining was less than par with dirty tables, slow bus boys, food on the floor, old table and chairs with dirty cushions! Our room was circa 1990 and had an air conditioner that couldn't keep up. Halls ways, sidewalks and lobby all need repairs badly! I would not recommend this hotel.

Just got back from our semiannual drive down to San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. Had another wonderful stay at Holiday Inn in San Jose. We really enjoy the wonderful people we've met over the years at the hotel (15 years and counting ). I love to see the hugs and smiles we get every time we drive up to the hotel. Hats off to manager Raul Caudillo and his great staff for their unending efforts to make our stay so memorable. Food gets better each year and service remains outstanding. Hope to be returning for years to come.

I am 18 years old and my best friend and I went with my parents to the Holiday Inn for our senior trip. We stayed for Spring Break in March- talk about beautiful! The resort was so fun and everyone was so nice! There was always something to do and the staff truly care about each and every single visitor. My friend and I loved being able to relax at the pool or go join in on the activities that they have going on each day. We loved how fun the shows were at night, and how much work they put into everything they did. The staff is INCREDIBLE and the food is awesome- I ate about three bowls of oatmeal every morning. The resort was super clean and beautiful! Beach volleyball was so fun and so was the dance lessons! The trip to downtown Cabo is not long at all and we felt it was the perfect distance to relax during the day and then go out at night! My parents have a condo in downtown Cabo but I would choose staying at the Holiday Inn any day! I will be back next spring break- and for many spring breaks to come :)!

As a recent post indicated, go to the Holiday Inn website and become a priority member. We stayed for two weeks in building one, which had a pool and clear view to the Sea of Cortez. We had a first floor room with the hammock. I would personally pay for the upgrade even though we didn't use the room much other than for sleeping and basic needs.

June is very much in the slow season. The complex is quite large, but I estimate it to be at 30% capacity during our stay. There were many times when we were the only ones in the pool during our first week. Things began to pick up the second week, but it was still very comfortable. We talked to a couple of other guests who had traveled in February and said never again, as the place was packed.

With the slow season comes + and -:
Positives: you have the place practically to yourself, reservations for any dinner are not required, dress restrictions are relaxed for the restaurants as well, seldom are there lines for anything
Negatives: they close certain bars and restaurants down, so options are limited and if you prefer a more quiet pool, chances are you are walking for a drink.

We were pleasantly surprised by the food. Other than Asian night sweet and sour pork (horrid), everything was rather on the good side. I could see that people going at high season being underwhelmed having to be tied to the buffet. The eating area closest to the ocean is deceiving. Ask for a menu! We just assumed that there was only hamburgers, fries, and salad. 5 days into our stay we were given a menu and then previous reviews made sense. The cook here is arguably the nicest person at the resort.

On behalf on the staff, some were fantastic, some were just fine, and a couple seemed to not like their job. We called the front desk one night for a pillow top and it did not show. The next day we went to the front desk and they were put right on. My advise regarding this is to simply ask for something to make the bed softer. It does make a slight difference. As far a drink service around pools, we were never asked for a drink so I'm unsure if they even offer that service. At breakfast we were offered coffee, but we always went to get our own drinks. Several times my daughter was not even offered water. Look for Jaime for bar service and Marco as a waiter. They stand out big time.

On the drive to the resort I was a bit underwhelmed by the desert drive. Drives from the PV and Cancun airports are much more eye friendly. But once we got to the resort our concerns went away. The beach is enormous and although you don't get the view of Cancun, it's noticeably better than PV. The grounds with the desert environment is very appealing.

The estuary is cool to a point. San Jose Del Cabo must be the sparrow capital of the world. I became very annoyed by them by the middle of the trip. They make nests above eating and drinking areas. This can be problematic, just ask my daughter!

The rooms are just what everyone indicates, outdated, but clean. Bathrooms come with a kit that includes everything to cover anything you may have forgotten. The shower water took 3-5 minutes to get hot, but fine after that.

We used the kids club and Karina was very good with the kids. They post an activities calendar, but rarely follow it completely. Our daughter loved it. You have to check them in and out and indicate whether or not they can leave on their own. The kids pool has a cool new addition where a bucket is continually filed with water and its offset so that when its full it pours water down on the kids. It has a couple small slides as well.

Overall, it was a very good stay for us. If you like to party I'd choose another place to stay. Bring a bubba keg cup holder in the 20 ounce range. I had numerous people starring at it. One guy saying, "That's the best idea ever!" We'll, he used some other clever wording. If you need any suggestions or concerns addressed please e-mail me.

Room Tip: Rooms in sections one and seven offer the best ocean view rooms for the 1st floor rooms

Dear Guest:

Thank you very much for providing your feedback and impressions of your experiences with us.
It it´s very important for us and with such detailed impressions we assure you that we are working on the issues you observed during your stay.
The chef has been working for better and improves our menus (Asian one).
Regarding our staff we are working in order to make that all our team works with the passion of karina, Jaime, Marco And Guadalupe our cook of Caribeño.
About the rooms we are working with our maintenance team in order to keep it 100% functional and the maids are conscious that clean it´s the most important issue along with the attitude.

We are pleased to know thah you like our new kids area and we keep continually working to make it better.

First timer on trip advisor usually just read reviews and laugh at what ppl complaint but i find it neccesary this time so no one has to experience what me and my gf did. So.... Check in was around 8pm terrible! No information about the hotel didnt get a smile from the girl that checked us in it seemed like she was just eager to get rid of us. No one helped with the luggage and when i asked the girl at the front desk her response was "nope there's no one" so didnt get to the room till 30 min later cuz had no idea how to get there. Some really nice guy who said was the houskeeping supervisor walked us there. Room has no balcony and the bed wow is it ever hard! Otherwise is just a regular room. Congratulations to the housekeepers tho they kept the room very clean on a daily basis. On with the food.... Below averge!!! The buffet is very small your every day choices are rice lettuce fish chicken and beef which needless to say its not good. Dinner is about the same and its just sad. Oh and by the way you better make it there before 10pm otherwise you are just gonna starve or will have to go out downtown for dinner like we did. Surprisingly enough The burgers at the restaurant by the pool was the best food we had there!!! And "Maria" the cook is very friendly!!. Now drinks... good luck trying to get a mojito anywhere!!!! Very small selection of drinks so be ready for that. Bartenders need some serious training!! Although did come across a good one actually the only one around "alma" make sure you get all your drinks from her and she'll go the extra mile to get whatever you want. So i would really recommend you go somewhere else!.. Activities staff is very boring they say they have many activities but they only do pool volleyball and a very lame bingo. The pool chairs are so not comfortable and old its ridiculous! By the beach area they have a very nice hammock but ONLY ONE!!! I really wonder why.... Hopefully some of the readers will find this helpful and book somewhere else!!

Room Tip: No balcony so i would say ask for ground floor so you can enjoy the hammock!

Dear Esteban P,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your stay. It is unfortunate the food selections, and interactions with the staff prevented you from fully enjoying your time at the hotel. We are confident the necessary adjustments will be made, in order to achieve complete guest satisfaction.

Thank you again for your comments, we look forward to serving you in the future.

PROS
I have spent my 11 days in the hotel and enjoyed it to the most part. The staff was super friendly and helpful in fulfilling my family's requests for service.
Food and the colorful dance shows offer you an opportunity to get to know the Mexican culture.
Location is great, because it borders on the east with an estuary that holds around 130 different species of birds, turtles, fish and other animals. The 20-30 minute walk eastwards on the beach offers an access to a small dolphinarium that is on the border of the estuary and Puerto los Cabos' harbor.
Nice historic art downtown within 25 minute walk from the hotel that offers concerts and galleries.
Also, I loved the open beach bar and restaurant and the early afternoon cart that offered snacks.
CONS
Eastern half of the hotel is close to the part of the city that has stables with horses that are offered to tourists for a $40/hr rate. So in the evening the horses are back and for some reason the resulting odor in the air is strong and unpleasant. Thus having the terrace door open during the night is not an option.
Beach is nice, but you can not use the ocean to swim or wade in it because of the strong currents and big waves.
Far from Los Cabos and most of the attractions there. If you want to get there and spend a day to see the arc, shop and dine, you've got to pay for a shuttle with fixed times, rent a car that is not so reliable, or taxi that is rather expensive.

It's a big mistake for us to choose this resort for our annual family vacation..nothing really match the website and lot of great comments from others....we finally decided to checked out and move to other resort after the second day....the only great thing for us to remember is senor Luis Fernandez the resort tennis coach and his sons operating the tennis event..these folks are friendly and knowledgeable about the game and make us feel like family...I am highly recommends to anyone that visit this resort in the future to stop by for a tennis lesson that run 10am from monday-friday and they also available for private lesson at anytime...kudo to the tennis coaching team.....Anthony Vu from sanjose, california
