As a recent post indicated, go to the Holiday Inn website and become a priority member. We stayed for two weeks in building one, which had a pool and clear view to the Sea of Cortez. We had a first floor room with the hammock. I would personally pay for the upgrade even though we didn't use the room much other than for sleeping and basic needs.
June is very much in the slow season. The complex is quite large, but I estimate it to be at 30% capacity during our stay. There were many times when we were the only ones in the pool during our first week. Things began to pick up the second week, but it was still very comfortable. We talked to a couple of other guests who had traveled in February and said never again, as the place was packed.
With the slow season comes + and -:
Positives: you have the place practically to yourself, reservations for any dinner are not required, dress restrictions are relaxed for the restaurants as well, seldom are there lines for anything
Negatives: they close certain bars and restaurants down, so options are limited and if you prefer a more quiet pool, chances are you are walking for a drink.
We were pleasantly surprised by the food. Other than Asian night sweet and sour pork (horrid), everything was rather on the good side. I could see that people going at high season being underwhelmed having to be tied to the buffet. The eating area closest to the ocean is deceiving. Ask for a menu! We just assumed that there was only hamburgers, fries, and salad. 5 days into our stay we were given a menu and then previous reviews made sense. The cook here is arguably the nicest person at the resort.
On behalf on the staff, some were fantastic, some were just fine, and a couple seemed to not like their job. We called the front desk one night for a pillow top and it did not show. The next day we went to the front desk and they were put right on. My advise regarding this is to simply ask for something to make the bed softer. It does make a slight difference. As far a drink service around pools, we were never asked for a drink so I'm unsure if they even offer that service. At breakfast we were offered coffee, but we always went to get our own drinks. Several times my daughter was not even offered water. Look for Jaime for bar service and Marco as a waiter. They stand out big time.
On the drive to the resort I was a bit underwhelmed by the desert drive. Drives from the PV and Cancun airports are much more eye friendly. But once we got to the resort our concerns went away. The beach is enormous and although you don't get the view of Cancun, it's noticeably better than PV. The grounds with the desert environment is very appealing.
The estuary is cool to a point. San Jose Del Cabo must be the sparrow capital of the world. I became very annoyed by them by the middle of the trip. They make nests above eating and drinking areas. This can be problematic, just ask my daughter!
The rooms are just what everyone indicates, outdated, but clean. Bathrooms come with a kit that includes everything to cover anything you may have forgotten. The shower water took 3-5 minutes to get hot, but fine after that.
We used the kids club and Karina was very good with the kids. They post an activities calendar, but rarely follow it completely. Our daughter loved it. You have to check them in and out and indicate whether or not they can leave on their own. The kids pool has a cool new addition where a bucket is continually filed with water and its offset so that when its full it pours water down on the kids. It has a couple small slides as well.
Overall, it was a very good stay for us. If you like to party I'd choose another place to stay. Bring a bubba keg cup holder in the 20 ounce range. I had numerous people starring at it. One guy saying, "That's the best idea ever!" We'll, he used some other clever wording. If you need any suggestions or concerns addressed please e-mail me.
