After an extremely long and tiring plane trip, me and my wife were glad to get to the Riu.
Overall we really enjoyed our 5 day visit and we were sad to leave.
The check-in was uneventful, but was a little peeved that no one asked to take our bags - maybe it was late. The main entrance is quite beautiful. The complex is pretty large, but we found our way to building #3, but had to carry the bags up to our room. Once there - we noticed a nice sized room and a refrigerator stocked with Coronas and water -- needless to say I immediately opened up a cold one to start enjoying my vacation.
The resort is quite large - but its not impossible to walk around. We were in building # 3 - garden view overlooking the large main pool area. The bedrooms were clean and the maid staff did a good job of cleaning up after us. Our location was central to everything - including the food and the beach area, near building #7. I recommend the location if you don't have an ocean view.
Food -- Overall, i thought the food was good-to okay. Breakfast was by far the best - eggs, pancakes, fruit, waffles, etc - Everything looked fresh and good to eat. Lunch was also good. Dinner was okay - a couple of nights it looked they had limited choices. I thought some of the options could have been better. We did eat at the restaurants - the Steak and Asian place -- I thought both of these could have been a lot better. I found that the buffets were better than both.
Pools -- really nice - the infinity pools near Building # 7 were amazing and had a great view of the downtown area. Also the swim-up bars were money.
Activities -
Lounging - Most afternoons we spent lounging around the pools and bars near building #7. Great place - plenty of open options.
ATV Tours - I highly recommend the ATV tour - we booked a tour through our Orbitz travel guy, seated in the front lobby. It came to $85-$90 for a double. They took us north about 30-40 minutes to Amigo's ATV. For the first 30-45 minutes they teach you and take you up this hill and down to the beach area. You end up along beach front on the Pacific Coast. After that, you are free to roam up and down the hills, the beach - wherever you want for over 90 minutes. Pretty cool if you are a bit adventurous.
Glass Bottom -- We did the glass bottom boat tours to Lovers Beach -- really nice area and you get to see the arch and a pretty amazing beach.
Downtown - we went a couple of times -- it was cool, a bit exhausting due to the afternoon heat. Also an opportunity to bargain with the locales. We either took the local bus ($0.70) or a taxi ($10)
Value -- We got a huge bargain through Orbitz -- I think we paid around $60 per person/day - ( had a $100 cpn to reduce expenses) for hotel and food - its quite a steal.
Would definitely go back and recommend to others.
