Overall, I would say the Riu Santa Fe is a decent all inclusive option in Los Cabos. My wife and I just returned from a one week stay at Riu Santa Fe. We stayed from May 18th -25th.
As previously mentioned in prior reviews, there are definitely good and bad points about the hotel.
We booked our trip through Apple Vacations and did not have any problems with any of our travel plans or reservations. We had previously stayed at Riu Palace in Cabo 3 years ago and fell in love with Cabo San Lucas.
When arriving at the hotel, check in was very slow and a little unorganized. However, after a slight delay we were given a room on the third floor of building 6. The room was very nice and clean. We had a balcony with a view of the garden and the pool in the middle of the resort. The room had a king bed and plenty of space for two people. We used our safe, with no problem of theft.
We actually were happy with the location of our room because it was very central to all the places we were going throughout the week (beach, pool, food, drinks, ect.....)
Some of the positives about the Riu Santa Fe include:
1. Location, Location, Location:
The resort is situated in one of the best spots in Cabo San Lucas, The grounds are beautiful and from the beach or the pool bar you can look out and see “Lovers Beach" and the beautiful rock formations that have put Los Cabos on the map. The resort is only 2-3 miles from downtown Cabo San Lucas, also a big positive. My wife and I actually walked to the downtown area along the beach. (About a 40 min walk). We also took a cab one night for $10 each way.
2. Friendly Service:
We always seem to have pretty good luck with the service in Mexico. Although the service at the Riu Santa Fe was not the best we have seen, it was still pretty damn good.
3. The Weather:
Expect mid 90's with no rain if you are going to Cabo anytime soon.
4. Cabo Adventure Excursion
We went on the outdoor adventure canopy tour based on a recommendation made on Trip Advisor. This "zip line adventures" tour run by "Cabo Adventures" was well worth the money (About $88 USD per person). We booked the tour through the Apple Vacation Rep at the resort. The tour is about 1 hour north of the resort and was awesome.
Some of the negatives about the Riu Santa Fe include:
1. The Food Selection:
Compared to other all inclusive resorts we have stayed in Mexico, the variety and the quality of the food was below average, but I guess you get what you pay for? The four restaurants located at the Riu Santa Fe were also slightly disappointing, for example at the Asian Style Restaurant, the dinner was completely self-serve (buffet style). I recommend the Steakhouse and Mexican as the best places to go at this resort.
2. Dinner Reservations:
This system was a little crazy compared to other All Inclusive Resorts we have stayed at in the past. Basically, if you want to reserve a dinner reservation, you have to go down to the main courtyard where the breakfast buffet is located around 7AM - 9AM. At this time you will get a number and told to come back at a certain time, depending on the number you rec'd.
3. No Swimming on the Beach:
Based on our previous experience in Cabo, we kind of expected that we could not go swimming in the ocean at the resort. The undertow of the water and the size of the waves make it nearly impossible to go swimming near the resort, However, if you are feeling ambitious and really want to go in the ocean water, you can walk down the beach about 10-15 mins and there is a spot where the water is calm enough to swim.
In closing, I would rate the Riu Santa Fe about a 3 ½ out of 5. The resort still has to work about a few issues however, if you are looking for a middle of the road resort within your budget, I would definitely consider the Riu Santa Fe.
