My husband and I stayed at the Riu Sante Fe from 3/12-3/19 with our 18 year old daughter and were there with another family. After reading the reviews before leaving on our vacation, I understandably was nervous; I needn't have been concerned.
My only complaint did not involve the hotel, but the unusually cool nights during part of the time we were there. We did bring jackets and sweaters, but on three of the nights it was just too cool to be outside in the evening.
The weather on 6 of the 7 days was perfect. The warm dry heat made being outside in the sun very enjoyble, and there was not a cloud in the sky. Only one day was very windy and too cool to be in the pools.
There were a number of "spring breakers" there, but they pretty much stayed in one pool area. It was nice to have other teenagers there for our daughters to meet, and we had the option of choosing to sit in another area of the infinity pool area where more families and couples tended to be located. We did see one fire extinguisher that had been sprayed, but no evidence of vomit or urine on the pathways. We did not hear any noise from our room.
We stayed in Building 7, which I highly recommend. I do not think that I would have enjoyed my trip quite as much, if we had been in a different building. We had only a partial view of the ocean, but the location of the building was perfect. If I am going to vacation at a location with an ocean, I want to be near the ocean and the beach. The views were spectacular. The pool water was a little cool a couple of days, but in general, it was perfect. The walk to the main areas was about 3 minutes, much less than in the resort I stayed at last year. There was a restaurant open for lunch right next to the pools.
I don't know what the people are talking about when they say there are no bathrooms near the pools. Both pool areas have restaurants nearby with bathrooms easily acessible to the area.
The food was fine. Breakfasts were best, with the made to order omlets and fresh fruit and juices being my favorite. I always found something fresh to eat. If you like desserts, then you might be disappointed in their "unique" flavors, but I stuck to the ice cream or fresh fruit. Yes, the drink glasses are small, but many people brought their own cups. As far as the complaints about weak drinks...just ask for more or a top shelf liquior and the bartenders will make your dring like you want it.
We went into Cabo a couple of times to eat...a little pricey, but I think we could have found better deals. We went to the Marina and found a captain to take the six of us out on the ocean for a couple of hours...much cheaper than through the hotel tours. Our daughers went zip lining at Wild Canyons, which they said was great (accept for the harrowing ride up and down the mountain, where the participants had to ask the driver to slow down repeatedly!). We also took a water taxi to lover's beach.
We knew people staying at a hotel that was not all-inclusive, at the same time we were in Cabo. They did not rave about the food which was very expensive and each time they wanted a coctail ($7) or a coke ($2) they had to reach into their wallets. The quality of the drinks and food did not seem much better than our experiences. There is something to be said for eating and drinking without being concerned with prices or seeing a bill at the end of the trip.
I like to swim in the ocean, but I knew that wouldn't be possible at most hotels in Cabos, when I booked the trip. We saw a young women that needed to be rescued one day...so yes, please don't be foolish.
We do know of people who experienced a broken air conditioner that was not ever fixed, and fans in the bathroom would help. However, all in all, we had a great time. No vacation is ever 100% perfect, but this vacation exceeded our expectations!! Relax and enjoy the positives.
