My wife, 13 year old son and I stayed at the Riu Santa Fe March 09- March 14 and had a wonderful time. A friend and I had booked the RSF for a trip in April and after finding a great deal with Travelocity we decided to take a family trip for Spring Break.
Checking in at the RSF was quick and painless. The lobby area is very nice with a cool looking fountain.
Our room was #1331 located on the top floor of building #1. Building #1 is situated farthest from the beach and has no elevator. The room was very nice and the a/c worjed well however there was a musty smell that lingered all week. I had packed a bottle of Febreeze for this reason but it had no effect on the smell which was apparently due to lack of ventilation in the room. The beds were very firm full size beds. The bathroom was roomy with double a sink. The shower had plenty of water pressure and hot water except for our last morning when there was no hot water. The mini fridge was well stocked with a dozen or so Coronas, several big bottles of water and several bottles of various Pepsi Cola products. We never ran out of drinks in the room and were asked by someone almost daily if our mini fridge needed restocking. The balcony of our room overlooked the rear of La Mission restaurant and the central pool area located away from the beach. The balcony had a small table, two chairs and a retractable drying rack. Apart from the smell, which I have found to be common in many of the resorts I have visited in Mexico, the room was very nice.
There are 7 housing units at the RSF. Units #1-#6 are situated in a circle surrounding the large central pool area located away from the beach. Building #1 is at the rear edge of the property, #2, #3 and #4 are on the south side of the property with rooms facing inward overlooking the central pool area and outward facing towards the town of Cabo San Lucas. Buildings #5 and #6 are on the east side of the circle about half way between building #1 and the beach area with rooms facing inward towards the central pool area and outward facing the Riu Palace. There are no ocean views from buildings #1- #6. Building #7 is situated overlooking the beach pool area and the Sea of Cortez. The east side of building #7 has full ocean views while the south side faces the town of CSL and has limited partial ocean views. The north side of building #7 faces the south side of the Riu Palace. I think that building #7 has an elevator.
The grounds of the RSF are beautiful with a mix of grassy tropical areas and sandy dessert areas. As with the rooms, the grounds were very well kept and always clean.
The gym was well equipped with machines but no free weights, but you’re on vacation so who cares. The spa is located in the same building as the gym. My wife had a massage at the spa. The cost was about $110.00 (US) and she said it was the best massage she had ever had.
The central pool, the one away from the beach, is huge and overlooked on one end by the La Mission restaurant. There is a bar at the other end that you can walk up to or swim up to. There are several ping pong tables in an area next to this pool.
The beach pool is also huge with one end seemingly filled by a fountain pool and the other end falling off into the sea. The views of Land's End and the Sea of Cortez are unbelievable from here. There area two bars located in the beach pool area, one on each side of the main pools. Both bars have a walk up area on ne side and a pool area on the other. There was always plenty of beach chairs around the pool however I went to the beach pool area every morning and placed towels on three chairs to secure good location. This was the middle of Spring Break so we found the best location to be on the far south side of the beach pool area near the Tequila pool bar because most of the younger crowd stayed near the other side of the beach pool area. This area also provided the best views of Land's End and CSL. I would pull our chairs right up to the corner of the property and was only steps away from the pool bar from which you could look out onto the Sea of Cortez from while having a drink from the comfort of the pool. Gaby, one of the bartenders at the Tequila pool bar, was great, making up non-alcoholic drinks for my son and really good mojitos with fresh mint and lime for me and my wife.
The beach was gorgeous but do listen to the warnings about the current. The waves would be nice and small for a while and then, without warning, a surge of large waves would pound the shore. There were plenty of beach chairs available on the beach but one complaint was there are no umbrellas for these chairs. Due to the large waves the beach has a steep decline to the water but there is plenty of level beach to walk on if that is a problem. One morning we walked into CSL on the beach. The walk was a nice 30- 40 minute walk. We bought some items from the beach vendors who would approach but were not overbearing and would walk away if you told them "no thanks". About a 15 minute walk from the RSF towards CSL you will find several tents set up on the beach offering massage and spa services. One advertised a 40 minute massage for $20.00 (US). We did not have a chance to try this place but it looked clean and professional. There are several bars and restaurants located on the beach so you can get a drink or a meal on the way. We entered CSL through the marina. We stopped at Mango's in the marina and had a plate of fruit and drinks. The fresh squeezed orange juice there was worth the walk. There is also a Harley Davidson store with a bar looking out onto the marina located there. We ate lunch at a local spot located behind El Squid Roe called The Crazy Lobster that had really good lobster tacos and lobsters tails for $9.95 (U.S). It appeared that happy hour with 2 for 1 drinks was from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. at most of the CSL spots. We did take a taxi into CSL one night, $10.00 (US) each way, and ate at the Giggling Marlin. The food was good but we good have eaten just as well at the RSF.
We ate at the buffet restaurants, the Asian restaurant and the Italian restaurant at the RSF and were happy with all places. My family is very health conscious and liked the buffet style restaurants because of the selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. The trick to enjoying a buffet restaurant is not to wait until closing time to go because of course by this time the food quality will not be as good. The Asian restaurant was not my favorite. The sushi was sort of tasteless but this is Mexico, if I wanted top notch sushi I should have went to Asia. I did really like the Peking duck and several other dishes served there. We all had the filet minon at the Italian restaurant and it was great. I have had better food at a different all inclusive however the resort was a 5 star and was much more expensive. We, even my 13 year old son, were very satisfied with the food at the RSF. The reservation system for the themed restaurants was not a problem. Reservations are made from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. for that evening’s meal. A table is set up near the main breakfast buffet restaurant, The Baja Grill, from which you obtain a number. When you get the number the employee gives you an approximate time to come back. I usually had enough time to eat breakfast or go to the gym instead of standing around waiting. Once you return and your number is called you make your reservation. No big deal. This process is necessary, not because the restaurants were full, there was always plenty of empty tables, but for the kitchens to know how much food to prepare. At the themed restaurants you have a choice of the main dish such as what type of steak you would like, but the rest of the meal, appetizers and sides, are served buffet style. Again, no problem, good food.
There was always entertainment but we did not see much of that after being on the beach all day and having dinner it was usually time for some rest. My son and I did go to the sports bar a couple of nights for pool and internet access. The sports bar, which is open 24/7, also has cold sandwiches available for late night snackers.
Some tips to consider if visiting the RSF would be to carry light sleeves for the evening, the nights can be cool. Carry a larger mug for drinks if a 10 ounce glass is not enough. I did this but after day 1 and missing dinner that evening I retired the 32 ounce mug for the smaller servings. Pack a nice candle for the room because Febreeze does not help. Be prepared to walk. The resort is huge but the beautiful landscape and abundance of bars wit ice cold drinks makes the walking much nicer.
Overall we had a great time at the RSF. The only problem to speak of was the musty odor in the room but this was not enough of a problem to warrant a complaint with the front desk and extremely minor considering all the wonderful things to be said of the RSF.
The one thing that made the stay so enjoyable was the hardworking and friendly staff of the RSF. I have stayed at many resorts and hotels but I can honestly say that I have yet to find a more courteous and serving staff as is at the RSF. I can't wait to go back!
