The Riu Santa Fe is generally a very nice resort. It's quite spread out, so there's lots of room for everyone. The busiest places are the pools and bars on the beachfront. The pools behind this section are quite a bit quieter and nice for families with young children.
Our room was very clean, and we were quite surprised to find a fully stocked mini bar (vodka, tequila, rum, etc. and water, pepsie and 7-up) there for our use at anytime. The rooms did have a bit of a musty smell which I found strange for such a brand new hotel. The beds were just OK - although we were glad to get back to our own. We did find out the last night of our stay how thin the walls and ceiling are - the sound-proofing is terrible. At night when we were trying to get our toddler to sleep we could hear the lady above us walking back and forth across her floor with her heels on - very annoying. In fact she dropped something metallic on her floor and we could hear that too.Other people we met on the trip said they could hear the TV show in the next room. So bring ear plugs.
The food was typical Mexican buffet food. They do put out an impressive array of fresh fruit and fresh salad fixings. Being Canadian we found the hot foods rather bland. We didn't bother with the a la carte restaurants. We had a toddler with us and couldn't be bothered with specific reservation times. Besides, you could get most of the things from the a la carte restaurants at the main buffet restaurant. They even have a sushi night on Wednesdays.
Service at the resort was great. The only thing missing was poolside service. Everyone was very friendly and attentive. The Kids Club is great! Brisa does a fabulous job with the children.
We noticed a few issues with the hotel being new that need working out - mostly with the grounds. Sink holes in and around some of the landscaping, problems with backed up water lines etc.
When it comes to booking fishing excursions, we strongly recommend you go directly to the marina in Cabo, walk around and talk to the different providers. You'll save yourself at least $200 by doing this. Also, if you want the big sport fish you need to go out for 8 hours - we got suckered into a 5 hour fishing trip for $400 that got us whale and dolphin watching only because we didn't have the proper amount of time to get to the sportfishing grounds - located 22 miles off coast. We booked our first trip through the guys in the lobby. The second trip was booked diredtly through Red Rum Fishing Charters - a big difference.
There's a Wal-Mart located within walking distance from the hotel - as long as you don't have young children. Taxi ride one way is $8 US. They have a good selection of souvenirs, liquor and a food section. A little disorganized though.
Overall as a destination, we won't got back to Cabo San Lucas as we like to be able to swim and play in the ocean - you can't here. The current is too strong.
We would stay at another RIU hotel though, as it was good overall.
