Stayed at the Riu Santa Fe on Jan 19-22, 2008. Second time here - was there last Dec 8, 2007. As I noted, their definition of "oceanview" is "partial oceanview", thus you're better off paying for the partial oceanview. Upgrading at the hotel is not good - they give you the rack rates; you get better deals at other websites such as CheapTickets or Expedia.
The jacuzzi suite had oceanfront view of Land's End. There's a jacuzzi in-room and another jacuzzi outside (via spiral stairways of your balcony) on the roof top. To soak in it was very relaxing especially after a day's of activities.
Pros:
Enjoying the view of either the TV or the ocean while jacuzzing in your tub for 2 while sipping wine/martinis. The detail in the room (marble & handpainting) is beautiful. The room is twice as big as their oceanview or gardenview rooms. As for the service from the restaurants, they were excellent (tips helps). The breakfast buffet was good (cook to order omelets) and so was the steakhouse (tell your busboy/waiter to tell the chef on how you want it grilled and if you want grilled mushroom, take it from the salad bar and give it to the chef). They are very accommodating especially if you tip them - they only make $20 per day, so they welcome any $$ amount. As for the drinks, you don't get the cheap well drinks. Great dirty martinis, bloody marys and mexican coffee with baileys and kalua.
Cons:
Jets on the rooftop jacuzzi wasn't working but you can still soak in the nice hot water and enjoy the view. The hotel mechanic came right away to see what was wrong but couldn't fix it. Thus, you're better off booking just the suite (it has the in-room jacuzzi) and not paying extra for this room. As for the lunch buffet, it was so-so (gotta get there while it's fresh before it gets cold or any flies lands on the uncovered food).
Note: If you need extra beverages or pillows, don't call the front desk - you won't get it. Call housekeeping directly via the operator.
Must do: The tropical spa scrub treatment at the Pueblo Bueno at Sunset Beach was heavenly. They put on a mango-coconut scrub (other options are available such as lavender, chocolate, red wine, etc) and massaged it all over. Then the masseuse gently places 6 shower heads on you to rinse it off while simulteneously massaging. Then you dry off and lay down again while the masseuse massages in the same aromatic lotion all over you. My girlfriend opted for the lavender scrub and my husband opted for the swedish massage. Then relax afterwards at the steam room or jacuzzi. My husband was happy when he came out - he was totally relaxed.
The sunset cruise (all you can eat & drink) was great - saw two whales. The food & alcohol was better at the hotel - they only serve well drinks at the cruise.
The glass bottom ride ($5 per person/one-way at the hotel). It takes you to the lover's beach (sea of cortez side) and divorce beach (pacific ocean side) as well as taking you to see the sea lions perch on the bluff.
If you're doing timeshare (they bombard you right after you get your luggage & check out from immigration), I was informed from one of the guests that the max. cash in dollars you get is $300 along with a bottle of tequilla, blanket & transportation to your hotel. Most of the guest here were from Canada & Florida.
Overall, it's all in your attitude - if you're here to have fun & have a great time, you'll get it. But if you're a complainer & whiner, then you'll find everything very critical & have a miserable time.
