We recently went to San Jose del Cabo for the first time. After going to Puerto Vallarta a few times we felt it was time to try something new.
Arriving - We paid $52 USD for 4 of us to get from the airport to Playa del Sol. Trust me when I tell you that these jokers are all in cahoots so getting a deal from the airport to the resort is not possible. You have 3 choices to get to the resort. 1. take your chances and try to book a ride prior to your arrival. The best deal I found going this route would have cost no less than $40 bucks for 4 people. But how do you know who is who. You pay upfront and hope someone is there to pick you up. yeah right. Option 2. Try to find a ride once you have your bag in hand. GOOD LUCK. The sharks will eat you alive. Option 3. (The one we used). Once you arrive there is a booth right next to the money exchange. The price is set and you pay. The guy tells you exactly what to do from there. Listen to the guy and you will be fine. he shows you a picture of a guy and tells you to find that guy and hand him your receipt. Which we did and a few minutes later we were in a cool bus on our way. On the way there is a guy in the bus with you that gives you tips. Listen to him but dont ask him anything as everything he recommends is based on his best commission cut. NOTE: Do not exchange money at the airport.
The resort - Was small and cozy but very nice. Our rooms were very nice and we had great views of the beach. The rooms were very clean, spacious and the kitchen was well stocked with all amenities you may need to cook in your room. Microwave, coffee pot, big fridge, nice stove where all provided.
The pool was small but was very nice and clean and the staff was very very nice. The pool bar was a treat but very expensive. However we worked around that by bringing our own drinks to the pool and minimizing our food spending at the pool. We went to subway which is very close. Dominos is close as well. We also made a short trip to the MEGA (mexican SuperWalmart) to buy groceries to take back to the resort. The cab ride to the store or anywhere else in San Jose) is $5 USD. There is always cabs right out front. Be sure to ask about the price BEFORE you get in the cab just to be sure. If you are looking for resort planned activities, wild parties or anything like that then this isnt the place for you. The bar closes at 11PM. They do have a good happy hour at the bar from 5 to 7. Everything is 2 for 1. We had a great time by the pool and spent many hours enjoying the pool. Another great feature of this resort is that you can go out on the beach and not get hounded by vendors. There are very very few vendors near. If you decide you need info from the consierge or front desk they will try to get you to listen to the timeshare pitch. We just politely refused and they were OK with that. Of course they will give you discounts to activities if you listen so you have to decide how valuable your time is. My advise is to decline and pay the full price. Timeshare pitches SUCK.
Outside the resort - San Jose Del Cabo is very nice, clean and has a lot of charm. Cleanest Mexican town I have ever been to. There are shops to get your shopping fix. The town sqaure was beautiful. People were very nice and shop owners are not overbearing. We ate a drank at a few places. El Dolce was good italian food at a good price.Service lacked a little but the food was good. Baja Brewing company was nice, very clean and had a good selection of microbrews at a good price. Our favorite meal was at El Comal. Its hard to find but if you find it you will love there Mexican food. I highly recommend this place for their Margaritas, Mexican food and WONDERFUL service. There is a place called Shooters that has NFL football on Sundays and a great happy hour from 11AM to 4PM daliy. 10 peso beers and good bar type food. Always ask for their Mexcian menu as they have this other menu that is expensive and seems to cater to the tourist that is looking for food like they get at home. The mexican menu is cheap, good and goes well with your 10 peso a bottle Corona. My buddy and I hung out there on a Sunday during happy hour while our wives shopped. We were there the entire happy hour drank a lot of beers, eat and did shots and our tab was under 50 bucks. Trust me when I say this was a great deal.
We went to Cabo San Lucas 2 times. It is about a 40 minute drive. You can get there by cab or public bus. Cab ride is expensive. I found the price to vary from $28 to $35 bucks one way. The bus is $2.40 USD. We took the bus everytime and it wasnt bad. You can catch the bus from various locations. The bus line is called CaboSur. While in Cabo we found it to be hectic in comparison to San Jose. Vendors always trying to sell you something. Beer and food expensive. We did find a few cool places that were reasonable. Tanga Tanga had good beer prices. We did go to Cabo Wabo and I wasnt impressed. It was REAL expensive and the staff treated you as if you where lucky to be spending your money there. We took our picture, bought some Cabo Wabo shot glasses and got the hell out.
In closing I would like to say I would go back to Playa Del Sol in a heart beat but remember if you are a member of Playa del Sol you will get a great room (our friends are members). If you are not a member you may not get the great room and view we got. We were there Sept 20 to Sept 27. If you have any question feel free to contact me at lynnstyr@yahoo.com. I am just looking to help any fellow traveler.
