My husband and I travel worldwide, and we have stayed at some of the most luxurious hotels - as well as some of the most mediocre. I booked tthe Villa del Arco for a few days getaway. I was "surfing the net" and was taken by the pictures of the suites and the descriptions of the amenities. It was a spur of the moment decision, and had I read the reviews before, I might not have booked this particular place. I went, armed with many 'don't's' and 'do's'. I would be very adament about not wanting to buy a timeshare; I would not stay in the room with the plumbing noises, anywhere on the first floor, and I would be certain not to have a room facing the community drag racing track. We had flown a 'red-eye' and arrived in the morning.
Incidentally, I had arranged online for CaboTrans, and they were very punctual and inexpensive - $68 round trip from airport to hotel.
When we went to check in, things were very slow, as it was a Wednesday and most people come and go on the weekend. We were given the dreaded first floor overlookng the garden (race track). We said it was unacceptable, citing the reasons we discovered through reading these reviews. They told us that booking online as we did, we were not entitled to an ocean view room. We said we would happily take a suite on the other side of the hotel. The front desk wasn't able - or willing to change our room, and we told them we would be willing to pay more for an upgrade - something more than the one bedroom suite we'd already paid for. They told us to sit on the couch in the lobby while they worked on it, and we did.
After watching us sit for some time, one of the concierges asked if she could help. When we told her the situation, she suggested we see the general manager. He was not in his office, but his secretary was. She made things happen. We were given a sixth floor suite - ocean and pool view. It was absolutely beautiful - everything the ads claimed and more. The deck was very spacious, and we loved fixing breakfast in our kitchen and eating on the patio enjoying the spectacular view.
We were not bothered with the time share come-ons. We made it clear at check-in that we were not at all interested. That was it. No further solicitations. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the pool every day. We also took the beach walk to the mall, and we tried different sidewalk cafes each day. Regarding the restaurant dining, we ate in the Buccaneer which was fun and very reasonable. The best deal is the market deli located on the grounds, and we bought fresh fruit, cold cuts, and salads. We also enjoyed having an occasional ice cream cone. The trolley takes guests around the grounds, but we enjoyed the walk among the beautiful flowers. The grounds really are very lovely.
The area is very secure. A guardhouse and gate recognizes all who step onto the premises; even our cab driver was asked for our room number.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this picturesque spot. We found the staff extremely helpful and eager to please. We would definitely stay again; however, we enjoy always experiencing new places and usually don't return to the same area. I appreciated the reviews I read, as I knew what to watch for - and I did. Because of that, our stay was idyllic.
