My two children and I visited the lovely Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar for a long weekend in January, 2005. Our first impression was how beautiful the property was. There were flowers blooming everywhere and the sky was a brilliant blue. We arrived at about 1:00 in the afternoon and our room wasn't quite ready so we had lunch at the poolside restaurant, which also overlooks the ocean. With the gentle breeze and the 80 degree weather, it was perfect.
That pretty much set the tone for the rest of our trip. The pools were absolutely beautiful and we spent most of our time hanging out there. The one we hung out at was directly below Tomates restaurant and there were a lot of families with kids there. We did find that you had to get out pretty early to reserve a good chair by the pool, but once you settled into your "spot" it was great. The poolside service was excellent and we ate lunch there most days. We also loved the jacuzzi that overlooked the ocean. What an amazing view.
I agree with all before who said the food was pricey. I don't mind paying that much for dinner but for lunch it was a bit over the top. However, we were on vacation and had planned to splurge, so what the heck. Since I had my 9 and 13 year old with me, I wish I had thought ahead and brought some peanut butter, jelly & a loaf a bread. They were getting tired of eating nachos and chicken strips every day (very limited children's menu poolside and at Tomates). We didn't bother with the other restaurants at the hotel, so I can't comment on those, but we did venture into town and had two great meals.
The first was at Mi Casa. This is authentic Mexican food at it's best. The place is so crammed with tables that it couldn't pass a fire inspection in the U.S., but it kind of added to the atmosphere. The mariachis were wonderful, and the food was great. The next night we went (based on all the reviews here recommending it) to The Office. The experience of sitting at a table with your toes in the sand was so fun. They even provide you with one of those Mexican blankets to wrap yourself in in case you get chilly. The food was good, but the entertainment was better. We happened to go on a Sunday night so it was "party" night (they do this on Sundays and Tuesdays only). They had entertainment on their stage and it was fun for me AND the kids. The only annoying part was the droves of vendors who swarmed our table. However, if you said no they did leave you alone.
All in all it was a great trip. If I had any complaints it was that the hotel had kind of a musty smell to it, and our particular room smelled like bug spray (didn't someone mention this in an earlier review?) But that was not enough to spoil our fabulous vacation. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.
