We arrived several hours before check in, and our room was not ready upon arrival (as expected). Staff was very accommodating, and we were able to get our room in less time than anticipated. The room was clean, the staff responded quickly for requests for additional towels, coffee, etc. We stayed in the main hotel, which had a balcony overlooking the ocean. The pools were beautiful, the beach was ok (the water was a little rough). The food prices were comparable to what we normally pay, and each restaurant (we ate at em all) is clean with excellent food. We did all the donts for Mexico, aka drinks with ice they use the manufactured ice (I was not brave enough to drink out of the sink, but I dont do that at home anyway), raw fish, sliced fruits, and so on, and never even had a slight feeling of illness (I do not have a stomach of steel either). For the most part, staff was able to communicate in English. The concierge was very accommodating. Service was not considerably slow, but it was relaxed compared to the US. Checkout was a breeze and our car was waiting. There were no discrepancies on our bill.We went into town three times ($20 each way, but hey, who wants to be driving), the first time to walk around. We walked through the crooked streets, which were sometimes smelly, but found a great tobacco shop, J&J (who we later found sells to the hotel), and purchased some yummy Cubans. Our second trip to town was for a charter catamaran ride. Boring, but found the good shops, mall, etc. at the marina area. Our third trip was for a charter boat for fishing. We rented a 28 ($400 including lunch), which was perfect for two. We wanted to go out for tuna, but only did a 6 hour trip, which did not allow us enough time. We caught two 100 pound marlins (catch and releaseonly one allowed per boat, and they will accost you off the boat to pay $1000 for taxidermy). You may be able to get a boat for less by walking the marina and offering cash, but I dont know how safe those boats would be. We had an English speaking captain and a very helpful assistant, which made the trip very relaxing. Found a great sushi place, Arts and Sushi, which has another great restaurant attached to the side of it (same owners). The weather was beautiful (Oct 26-31), the hotel was very nice, and prices were the same as US for clothing, ice cream, beer, food, etc. I would definitely return to this hotel, and plan additional activities such as diving and shopping (which we did not have enough time for).
