Just got back last night from 5 days in Cabo, at the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica resort. My wife and I went there with another couple, and we had a really good time.
My wife and my buddies wife did the research for this trip, and chose the Pacifica mostly based on TripAdvisor reviews. Also, Costco happened to be running a deal that included airfare and some extras, including ground transportation, $100 Spa credit , 10% off food/beverages at the sister PB locations in Cabo (there are four Pueblo Bonitos in Cabo...more on that later) free use of the gym facilities, and 10% off Avis rental car. (Just checked the Costco Travel site...the deal is still active for a couple more days.)
One thing my wife read on several reviews turned out NOT to be true. That is...to request an upper floor room. She had requested prior to our trip (via email,) an upper floor room. When we got to the reception desk, they did not have one available, but said that would try to get us one the next day. Our friends got an upper level room. Well, all I can say is that once we got to our first floor room, we loved it. The room had a king size bed (vs. two full or queen beds our friends got) and a much larger balcony. Plus, the view from the balcony was fantastic (see photo taken through sliding glass door.)
One thing about Pacifica. It is billed, and rightfully so, as a holistic spa and retreat. That's exactly what it is. It is quiet, tranquil, peaceful, relaxing, etc. For us two couples, at times it was almost TOO much so. But after going into town, or on our 14 hour road trip, it was always nice to come back to the medium sized, quiet resort. The point is...if you are looking for a place to kick up your heels, or frolic in the waves, then this is probably not the place. One of the other PB properties would probably serve that requirement better.
So, on to the highlights:
-Pool/Beach: The pool is nice, with great food/drink service around it. The beach may as well not be there, however. There are only about 5-7 chairs on the beach, but that's all they needed since nobody was at the beach, probably because the surf is completely dangerous (For example, my buddy, who brought his fins and was used to the Wedge in Newport could not even go in the water.)
-Service: The staff at PB is incredibly hospitable and basically work to serve your every need.
-Food/drinks: We ate several times at the pool, and the food was decent to good. The drinks are kind of pricey, (for example, I paid $20 for two Bloody Mary's at the pool two days ago.) This can be alleviated with some bit of craftiness. (Although know in advance that you are breaking rule number 10 if you bring food/beverages, or coolers to the poolside.) Since all of the PB properties are connected, we took advantage of the free shuttle and ate at Fellini's at the sister property called the PB Rose. HORRIBLE food and service. How bad? Well, we had to wait a million years for drinks, bread, appetizers, etc. They even comped us some appetizers and desserts, but fact is that my wife sent back her "minestrone", and I think the only time I was violently ill this trip was from the creme brulee. Plus, we paid a fortune. On the other hand, we had appetizers and drinks at the PB Sunset (the Manila Bar) on a separate night, and the food/service were excellent. I think Fellini's wait staff is overworked. In Cabo, we did not want to wait 3 hours to get a table at The Office, so we settled with going next door to Mango Deck. What a great choice. The food was decent, and the 7am to 7pm 2X1 happy hour was great.
-Smoking: This is a non smoking resort, so you have to go to the beach or the parking lot if you want to light up.
-Guests: The clientele was, for the most part, a sedate, more mature crowd.
-Spa: Pricey, but worth it. The $100 Costco credit was helpful, but hardly seemed to make a dent. I had an 80 minute Shiatsu massage, and my wife had an Obsidian Hot Stone massage. Both are highly recommended. But as far as prices, I think the Obsidian was around $2170 pesos, and the Shiatsu was around $1750 pesos. The exchange rate ranged from about 10 to 11.
-Gym: Excellent gym at Pacifica. If you don't have the Costco deal, (free gym use while you stay,) then you at least get to use the gym free the day of any spa treatment.
-Excursions: We rented a car (A Dodge Attitude, which was a small sedan with manual tranny,) for about $35.00. We got our money's worth here, as we drove all the way to Todos Santos, then across the entire Baja peninsula to the gulf, then south to San Jose Del Cabo, and finally back to Cabo. On the way we stopped at Los Cerritos Beach Club and had the best meal of the trip. I had read lots about Todos Santos. It was mutually and independently agreed by all in our group that Todos Santos was not worth going to; however, San Jose Del Cabo was wonderful. Beautiful 277-year-old town, found a great bar (Shooters) and watched local musicians playing in the town plaza next to the old church. Great shopping. We did not eat there.
So, final thoughts. Would I go back? Probably not, but that is not a knock on the PB Pacifica. All of the PB resorts seemed top-notch, but after having been to a resort closer to San Jose Del Cabo a few years ago and now a resort in Cabo San Lucas, I think we like the SJD vibe much better, so that's where we'll go when we return to Los Cabos in the future. But that is the fun of traveling-exploring new places and deciding on which you want to return to.
