Just got back last night from 5 days in Cabo, at the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica resort. My wife and I went there with another couple, and we had a really good time.

My wife and my buddies wife did the research for this trip, and chose the Pacifica mostly based on TripAdvisor reviews. Also, Costco happened to be running a deal that included airfare and some extras, including ground transportation, $100 Spa credit , 10% off food/beverages at the sister PB locations in Cabo (there are four Pueblo Bonitos in Cabo...more on that later) free use of the gym facilities, and 10% off Avis rental car. (Just checked the Costco Travel site...the deal is still active for a couple more days.)

One thing my wife read on several reviews turned out NOT to be true. That is...to request an upper floor room. She had requested prior to our trip (via email,) an upper floor room. When we got to the reception desk, they did not have one available, but said that would try to get us one the next day. Our friends got an upper level room. Well, all I can say is that once we got to our first floor room, we loved it. The room had a king size bed (vs. two full or queen beds our friends got) and a much larger balcony. Plus, the view from the balcony was fantastic (see photo taken through sliding glass door.)

One thing about Pacifica. It is billed, and rightfully so, as a holistic spa and retreat. That's exactly what it is. It is quiet, tranquil, peaceful, relaxing, etc. For us two couples, at times it was almost TOO much so. But after going into town, or on our 14 hour road trip, it was always nice to come back to the medium sized, quiet resort. The point is...if you are looking for a place to kick up your heels, or frolic in the waves, then this is probably not the place. One of the other PB properties would probably serve that requirement better.

So, on to the highlights:

-Pool/Beach: The pool is nice, with great food/drink service around it. The beach may as well not be there, however. There are only about 5-7 chairs on the beach, but that's all they needed since nobody was at the beach, probably because the surf is completely dangerous (For example, my buddy, who brought his fins and was used to the Wedge in Newport could not even go in the water.)

-Service: The staff at PB is incredibly hospitable and basically work to serve your every need.

-Food/drinks: We ate several times at the pool, and the food was decent to good. The drinks are kind of pricey, (for example, I paid $20 for two Bloody Mary's at the pool two days ago.) This can be alleviated with some bit of craftiness. (Although know in advance that you are breaking rule number 10 if you bring food/beverages, or coolers to the poolside.) Since all of the PB properties are connected, we took advantage of the free shuttle and ate at Fellini's at the sister property called the PB Rose. HORRIBLE food and service. How bad? Well, we had to wait a million years for drinks, bread, appetizers, etc. They even comped us some appetizers and desserts, but fact is that my wife sent back her "minestrone", and I think the only time I was violently ill this trip was from the creme brulee. Plus, we paid a fortune. On the other hand, we had appetizers and drinks at the PB Sunset (the Manila Bar) on a separate night, and the food/service were excellent. I think Fellini's wait staff is overworked. In Cabo, we did not want to wait 3 hours to get a table at The Office, so we settled with going next door to Mango Deck. What a great choice. The food was decent, and the 7am to 7pm 2X1 happy hour was great.

-Smoking: This is a non smoking resort, so you have to go to the beach or the parking lot if you want to light up.

-Guests: The clientele was, for the most part, a sedate, more mature crowd.

-Spa: Pricey, but worth it. The $100 Costco credit was helpful, but hardly seemed to make a dent. I had an 80 minute Shiatsu massage, and my wife had an Obsidian Hot Stone massage. Both are highly recommended. But as far as prices, I think the Obsidian was around $2170 pesos, and the Shiatsu was around $1750 pesos. The exchange rate ranged from about 10 to 11.

-Gym: Excellent gym at Pacifica. If you don't have the Costco deal, (free gym use while you stay,) then you at least get to use the gym free the day of any spa treatment.

-Excursions: We rented a car (A Dodge Attitude, which was a small sedan with manual tranny,) for about $35.00. We got our money's worth here, as we drove all the way to Todos Santos, then across the entire Baja peninsula to the gulf, then south to San Jose Del Cabo, and finally back to Cabo. On the way we stopped at Los Cerritos Beach Club and had the best meal of the trip. I had read lots about Todos Santos. It was mutually and independently agreed by all in our group that Todos Santos was not worth going to; however, San Jose Del Cabo was wonderful. Beautiful 277-year-old town, found a great bar (Shooters) and watched local musicians playing in the town plaza next to the old church. Great shopping. We did not eat there.

So, final thoughts. Would I go back? Probably not, but that is not a knock on the PB Pacifica. All of the PB resorts seemed top-notch, but after having been to a resort closer to San Jose Del Cabo a few years ago and now a resort in Cabo San Lucas, I think we like the SJD vibe much better, so that's where we'll go when we return to Los Cabos in the future. But that is the fun of traveling-exploring new places and deciding on which you want to return to.

We just returned last night from a 5 night stay @ the Pacifica- I am a very selective traveler and enjoy staying at a 5 plus star resort when I do get away from reality.

Upon arriving I was pleased to find a well decorated and very peaceful and beautiful resort. Even though we where in Cabo- this place makes you feel "away from it all" The service was great and consistant. We LOVED the food and was delighted with the many options. The Banana french toast is amazing. The Pacifica has its own bakery on sight and its breads are to DIE for!

The hotel is clean and tranquil- its great having no kids and this truly makes a world of difference- when we vacation with our children its a whole different feel.

They have a really awesome band playing Wed- Sun - they somtimes play out by the fire pit and it just doesnt get any better.

Now some Cons:
The airport- arriving and departing is a complete joke- Do your self a favor and allow ample time when departing. The security line it self took almost 45 minutes- a number of stressed out passangers where presnet as they did not expect this!

The Spa- and gym. The treatments are amazing but the spa is on the small side- I preferred the spa at the Sunset its bigger and laid out better. The gym was the only big bummer. Its dark and small and does not fit in with the rest of the hotel. Someting went wrong with the desing here. For it being a Holistic resort based on wellness and health I would of thought a better location for the gym would of been a priority. The gym @ the Sunset is much bigger and has complete ocean views- Nice!

We ate out @: Mi Casa and Ediths - both good - went on Caborey to snorkle (didnt see one fish) but the cruise was nice as the boat is huge and they run a really good outfit for the $$ I recommend it!

All in all I will return again this year! this time perhaps for a girls- getaway!
Cheers!

Hands down my worst hotel experience ever. We had a group of well behaved women in our late early 30s getting together for a girls' weekend. When we checked in, the hotel staff insisted that we pay an extra $100 for our room. He would not give us a receipt. Clearly a kickback and unacceptable. The room next to us was being remodeled and the paint and other toxic fumes from replacing the floor were intolerable and made it impossible to use the deck. We called no less than four times before we could get someone to take care of this. Of course, the next day, they were right back at it. Once again, we had to call numerous times before we could get someone to stop the toxic fumes.

Each night when we came back to our rooms, we were harrassed at the gates of the hotel. They made us wait up to 20 minutes to confirm that we were actually staying there and refused to let our friend from a neighboring hotel come up to our room to visit. I felt like I was staying at a prison! Note that when we returned to our hotel, we were sober, quiet and otherwise well-behaved, but were treated like spring breakers or illegal guests.

Did I mention the constant calls (beginning at 8am, no less) about time shares? We told them from the beginning to stop calling, but each morning, our rest was disturbed by these calls.

I would never stay here again. The hotel's attitude put a serious damper on our trip. As I said, worse hotel ever.

Pacifica, as it is known by the locals and taxi drivers, is an exceptional resort located on the pacific side of Cabo.

When you arive and go through the various security gates you can tell that this place is exclusive. When you walk in the main lobby, which is very nice, the scent of eucalyptus takes over.

Good points:
1) Service and the staff are exceptional. From the Bell men to the pool waiters, everything was great with no issues. Service was 1st class and attentive. They really make you feel relaxed. Make sure you bring small bills for tipping.
2) Amentities were clean and very nice. The landscaping around the hotel is beautiful. Pool area is well maintained. Make sure you check out the fire pit at night, great to have a glass of wine while the pacific ocean is crashing behind you.
3) $10-12 taxi ride to the main dock and restaurants was reasonable considering the distance travelled. My opinion, it is worth taking the taxis because parking dowtown is NOT plentiful, unless you want to pay for it.
4) Hotel has a 'convenience' store. Great for breakfast/coffee/snacks (~$5 for latte and a muffin) as well as water which is a must. Water can be on the pricey side, recommend that you get a supply at a grocery store if possible. Medium size bottles cost ~$4 in the convenience store and $8 from the pool bar. The sun is very strong so you will need plenty of agua.
5) After reading all of the negative reviews re Siempre , the restaurant was suprisingly good. We had dinner there are first night since we were tired from traveling. Check it out for yourself, reviews kabash it but I disagree.
6) Go on the sundriver whale watching tour. We saw a bunch of whales up close, they did a great job.

If you book through Expedia, get the round trip shuttle from the airport to your hotel (Gray line). Well worth it and cost effective ($30 round trip per person to and from your hotel.)

Bad points:
1) Once you get your luggage in the airport, head straight for the exit. DO NOT let one of the men point you towards the Vultures trying to sell you time shares. It was annoying and the last thing I wanted to do when I got off a plane and stepped into the beautiful 85 deg. weather.

2) There is a nice stretch of beach, but you cannot swim in the ocean due to the rough surf.

3) The restaurants were just ok! One thing I Iike when traveling is the cuisine. In my opinion, the restaurants were mediocre compared to the other places in the world. Maybe it was the ones we picked, but I was anxious for authentic mexican cuisine. We went to a couple of pricey ones which were good but not great:

Edith's- Good food but not worth the price ( ~75 for steak and lobster.

Mi Casa - good mexican food and atmosphere, very touristy but what do you expect your on vacation.

C's at Palmilla- Very fancy food, small portions and very expensive. The resort is gorgeous and where all the hollwood stars apparently stay, but a far distance from the hotel ( $70 round trip taxi ride).

The Office - great atmosphere on the beach, but food was just ok and over priced.

Solomon;s landing - Good place for bar food.

Tabasco's - go for a good and cheap lunch.

We made the mistake of not asking the hotel staff for authentic places to eat and went with the touristy places. Take advantage of the conierge service.

All in all, Cabo San Lucas is a safe and pleasant place. Pacifica is a hidden jem. To sum it up, it is a beautiful resort and we would not hesitate to go back.

We needed to book two rooms through Blue Ribbon Travel, who worked with Funjet Vacations and EPIC Los Cabos. We had our two daughters (18 & 22) with us. The rates were about $350 per night each room. Got hosed on the airfare from Mpls to Cabo $990 round trip.

The Pacifica is a 5 star resort. Very remote, on the Pacific side, next to nothing. About a mile beach with no one on it. If you like solitude and peace and quiet, this is the place. The sister hotel in Cabo, Rose', was like Coney Island.

Bad undertow at the Pacifica, so can't swim there, but gorgeous. Hotel is very minimalistic and zen inspired as the promo indicates. Staff is firendly and everywhere. Free shuttle to other Pueblo Bonito properties in Cabo. Spa was fantastic. There is extra charges for everything, bottled water $5.00, fitness center $10.00 or $15.00 with locker room access includes steam room, hot tub, cold water plunge, and shower, although great apple infused free water in the locker room, along with pecans and dried fruit (you could make a breakfast out of it). Very relaxing space. All the rooms are facing the pacific in some fashion. Food and drinks are priced like a nice US hotel (pina colada $9.00, corona $4.50, hamburger $13.50, dinners are $20-45 for entree'). Interesting taxi rates, into town $20 back to hotel $10. Golf is very expensive, paid $280 at Palmilla plus $70 for taxi, and $350 at Cabo Del Sol plus $60 taxi. The Palmilla was not worth the price, but Cabo Del Sol, was better than Pebble Beach.

Fitness activities are organized by Mugiel, who is very good. The Tezamul or beach-side sweat lodge was not embraced by the staff, they close it at 3:00, and at that time its 90 degrees outside, and not appealing, but at 8:00 or 9:00 pm it might be great. They do not have a Mexican shaman deliver the services, its Mugiel, the fitness guy, who does the thing, same guy that does the other stuff like yoga, water aerobics, and towel folding classes.

Water was great, and no one in the party of 4 got really sick, although, it is Mexico and the North American digestive systems are not prepared for all the new experiences, but nothing serious. We ate only at top tier establishments. We had dinner one evening at Esperanza, and would highly recommend it. Suggest you do not take the table on the outside cliff stone deck closest to the water. We were next to that table and two couples were having a lively discussions about their growing financial assets when a bath tub of sea water came over the wall and completely soaked two of them. We were 20 feet above sea level !!.

The city is very friendly, everyone is hustling, and it felt safe. Ernesto Coppel, the owner of the chain of hotels has a house between the Sunset and the Pacifica, that must be worth $10 million, its way better than Chalres Swabbs house at Peeble Beach, and that's probably over $30 million. Ernesto, if you read this, invite us to stay with your family for a week. I jogged by the house one morning and it was early and must have caught the beach guards off-guard. But he has a fantastic vision for the mile and one-half of beach front that he owns, and is just starting on the first of two, top shelf golf courses. The up keep and maintainence on the properties we visited was first class, and I hope he can finish the project, as it will be one of the best resorts in Cabo. I am a little concerned with the wind on the Pacific side with respect to golf, but maybe we were there during the windy season.

All in all, a first class resort, with great potential as the next phase of the resort vision is executed.
