We had to change our honeymoon from Jamaica to this location the day before our wedding due to an impending hurricane, so we really didn't know what to expect from this resort. Our travel agent had told us that this resort was the best rated resort that we could be switched to at the last minute.
Upon arriving, the front desk was a zoo, with no organization to waiting lines and waiting guests getting angrier by the minute. Guests were jumping lines to get to the reception desk, forming their own lines on the sides of the desk, and none of the employees ever said anything to these people who didn't feel the need to wait in line like everyone else. After about an hour of waiting, we finally got to speak to a resort representative, who was barely able to understand and communicate with us, only to be told that our room was not ready and to come back in hour. We went and got drinks, hoping our luggage would be okay while we waited. After about an hour, we went back to complete our check-in, but had to wait in the line again for about 45 minutes. Our room (junior ocean view suite #4122) was ready this time (about 4:45 P.M. by now), and we were off to our room with all four pieces of our luggage on our own, NO help from the luggage guys! Our room offered a nice view of the courtyard, pools, and mountains, but it had a strange smell about it that my husband and I decided smelled like year-old bacon grease. We tried to light some citronella candles and sprayed some body spray to cover the smell. Otherwise, the room was just okay, nothing spectacular by any means.
By this time we were starving, so we went to the buffet, but we were not impressed with what was offered. The food was just warm, flavorless, and nothing more than what you would find offered at a family-style buffet, such as Ryan's or Golden Corral. We were VERY disappointed. I survived on different varieties of potatoes (fried, hash brown, boiled), pizza, and stale nacho chips with cold cheese during our week there. To think we paid that much for that type of "all-inclusive" food/crap. My husband had a piece of undercooked chicken the first day there, so I was a bit turned off by the chicken, and not willing to try much more of the proteins offered. I tried fruit at breakfast one morning, and was sorry to realize that the watermelon, mango, and honeydew were all soured. Never tried fruit anymore after that. Milk for breakfast cereal was always room-temp and I was never risky enough to give it a go. We made reservations at the Mexican and Japanese restaurants, but both we just mediocre. The food was very similar to what was offered at the buffet, maybe a slight bit better. We eventually ended up taking the $10 cabs downtown to eat at night after a couple of days at the resort.
We were promised a honeymoon gift that we never received, after four days of asking where or what it was. It became more about the principle of being promised something than it was about what it was. I had a new MAC lip pencil that went missing and guest services could have cared less about my complaints. We even had condoms that were stolen!
We realized that there would be language barriers, but we thought that the resort could have at least put their better English-speaking representatives at the front desk, since 90% of the guests checking in were English speaking. This could have potentially sped up check-in.
Be wary of all vendors in the area, including in the hotel. We were almost ripped off by one of the gift shop employees after she increased the price of a water camera by $10 in about 15 seconds of us standing there, then acted like we were stupid and didn't understand the peso-dollar conversion factor. She was just trying to make some extra pocket money on the spot. Be prepared to haggle over everything!!! This includes all of the prices for the activities that are offered by the Mexican sharks selling the activities in the resort lobby and the jewelry store employees that follow you around like you are going to steal from them. It just got really old by the end of the week.
The drinks were okay. Sometimes really strong, at other times they seemed watered-down. Really depended on who was making them. The service was just okay as well, no one really stood out in my mind, except for one waiter at breakfast. He was on the far left side of the dining room near the buffet, Juan Carlo (?) may have been his name. Other than that, no one was really memorable.
The pools closed at 7:00 P.M., which seemed early to us, and the ocean was really rough. Be prepared to have to travel to a more calm beach. My husband and best friend's husband played golf at the Country Club, paid $100 and were disappointed to see that sewage water, that literally reeked of feces, was being used to irrigate the course.
I hate to be so negative, so I will say that the resort is beautiful and offers spectacular views of the ocean and mountains. The lawns and landscaped areas were manicured and well-kept, as well. We made the best of our time there, enjoyed the pools, the activities that we booked on our own (Jose with American Express-sketchy, but everything was as promised), and our evening dinners that we looked forward to downtown (Mi Casa, Hard Rock Cafe, Quesadillas, & of course Cabo Wabo Cantina-drinks VERY strong). Definitely do the ATVs and waverunners, but watch your personal belongings on the ride to the ATVs. We heard a horror story of a camera being stolen on the trip out after the lady fell asleep on the bus!
Not absolutely horrible, but food sucked!!! I don't think I'd come back or recommend it. Maybe do a non-all-inclusive and pay the extra money for the food, because you'll probably find yourself wanting something else to eat anyway. Oh, there are a lot of underage kids drinking, being loud, and trying way too hard to be cool as well!!
The scenery is beautiful though!
