The Riu Palace has a lot of good and bad things to offer.
First the good:
- The grounds are maintained very well. Their always seems to be some kind of upkeep going on.
- The pools are beautiful and cleaned daily. That was probably the biggest misconception I read before going. I didn't see anyone in the pools connected to the bar, but I imagine that pool could get really nasty. They have a calm pool and a recreational pool. You can always find a chair near the pool no matter what time it was. People often left their towels on their chairs to reserve their spot, although it wasn't really needed.
- The hotel at night actually has plenty going on. The bar at night serves good drinks, and they have a small club that opens at 11. You can head down to the beach and watch the sunset.
- Very close to downtown Cabo. A flat rate of $10 will get you there. Downtown there are plenty of restaurants, and bars to go to.
- The Jacuzzi suite was very big. It's bathroom had a giant shower and a tub that were separate, and his and her sinks. The terrace had a small entrance that led to a giant area with to layout chairs and a Jacuzzi. In my sweet it also had a a large area right behind the Jacuzzi that looked like it could have held 20 people for a party or something. Needless to say the room size of the suite was great!
Now the negatives: (I am normally a very positive guy and try to make the best of any situation, so for these things to be bad they must have been really bad!)
- The front desk will be no help to you. Our check in was very difficult even though our reservations were right behind them. (we could actually see our names on the envelopes!) We called 3 times to let them know the light in our shower and tub were out and that we were showering in the dark and no one came to fix it.
They were flat out rude when we asked for a different room. Finally when we checked out we had a high phone bill due to a $3 connection fee on all calls no matter whether it goes through or not, so we paid in cash. The fee I was aware of and just chalked it up as something we had to deal with since our cell phones don't work down their (sprint) but, when we paid in American cash they gave us back pesos and since we were leaving we asked if we could get the change in U.S. currency instead. They refused saying they had none which was a huge bold face lie since we had been buying their $20 phone cards to make calls all week because no other phone cards work with their system.
- Drinks during the day time seem to be watered down and at a lesser quality than at night. Also, the food in the restaurants is ok but, all their food seems flavorless and seems to get old quick, we ate out on two different occasions.
- Due to the rough ocean all the excursions we tried to go on kept getting canceled.
- The biggest problem I had with the Riu was the fact that they had construction going on seven days a week and it starts at 8 and goes till 8 at night. 8 in the morning wasn't so bad for me because I am from the east coast and it felt like 10 , but if I lived in the west coast this would have been a huge problem. Our sweet was in direct view of the construction. I know there is nothing they can do to stop the construction, but giving a discount to those people who cann't enjoy their decks or Jacuzzi because the construction kicks so much dirt in the air would be nice. Every night we had to clean the Jacuzzi because it was filled with the dirt from construction. This wasn't a huge deal, but if you are spending the extra cash for the room it would seem like they might do that for you.
All in all we had a great time at the Riu . I wouldn't go back due to the front desk and the fact that we saw many resorts closer to town, just as nice and with calmer oceans, which meant no canceled excursions.
TIP- bring an insulated cup (the bar will fill it up), go to the bank ahead of time and get a lot of ones for tipping (for better service) and make sure you lock all your valuables in the safe.
