I am an avid reader of Trip Advisor and use it when ever I stay at a new hotel and resort and I have found that the best way to "review" after a trip is to build upon what has been previously written, as they have a point (sometimes valid sometimes not).
My family (husband 2 children 8 & 10) went to the Riu for a week. It was good to great. I'll divide our reflections into: the GOOD, the inconvenient, the bad and just some helpful hints to make your trip easier, I hope it helps.
GOOD
The rooms are very clean! I am a bit of a clean freak and they did just fine. Clean sheets every day, tile floor that alows for clean floors, the beds although a bit firm is without stains (yes I pulled the sheets off and looked). The bathrooms are large and well appointed but there is no ventilation system so it gets a bit muggy. The rooms are large and have beautiful balconies.
Drinks are great. They are NOT weak but are plentiful. If you complain about the amount of adult drinks that are available, you may have a problem. You have liquor in your room, mimosas at breakfast, pool bars galore, wine at lunch and dinner, beer on tap and in your room fridge and the evening shows is a cornacopia of more drinks.
The grounds and the views are GREAT. The lawns, pools, water fountains, open tiled hallways are stunning. Even the gym has a view.
Service. Like all service personnel, they are good and bad but if you treat them respectfully and tip you will be VERY happy. I was unhappy with with our first room (there is a private home on the East side with an unattractive yard and a happy rooster and our "partial ocean view" consisted of a slight blue ocean when you leaned over the railing) so our valet called the front desk and listened to several rooms before agreeing and taking us and it was PERFECT, we never had to go back to the front desk or try the 5 other rooms they first suggested to him.
Kids Club. It is small with limited "events" but they staff is great. The kids enjoyed the art and treasure hunt. If you ask the staff they will be happy to babysit for you in the off hours ($30 for an hour and 1/2). They will either come to your room or you may drop them off back at the kids club. If you have children this would be a good plan as the Asain and Sir Lawrence will not allow children. If you get early reservations they will take the children to dinner at the buffet.
Breakfast. Yes, the breakfast is great. Fresh fruit, eggs, meat and mimosas. I wish I could have had breakfast twice a day.
Location. Close but not too close to downtown. Cabs are available at any time in both directions and simply tell the driver $10 to Cabo and the deal is done. The mall is air conditioned and is a nice place to shop when it is 90 out. If you get tired of the mass produced food you can go to Ruths Chris Steakhouse on the marina.
INCONVENIENT
No ATM at the resort. Unless you have travelers checks you will need to go to the city to get cash.
The beach is not swimable and the sand is course.
The sewage in Cabo is poor, it smells. My room never had a problem but we kept the sinks plugged when not in use.
If you want to go to one of the "speciality" resturants you will be at the mercy of the reservations book and when you do go the selection is limited.
Water. I love water and had to remind myself to not drink out of the tap and I was hestitant with the table water also. The biggest sacrafice was ice tea, I could not assure that they used purified water. No one in my family got sick.
The pool water is cold, not bad cold but it was a bit bracing.
Stairs. If you have a problem with climbling stairs you may be frustrated with this resort.
BAD
With drinks in abundance you get unrully guests. A few guests at the pool were clearly drunk, loud and enjoyed showing everyone their lack of intelligence by using the F word in every statement. Many of the guests were clearly on a holdiay from manners and the staff would not curtail them in any way.
The hallways are tiled and you will hear every step and word while they walk to their rooms.
The towel cards. This is just plan silly and a pain. You get cards they you must exchange for towels. Inevitably, you will get stuck with wet towels and have to lug them back to your room because the towel room is closed.
Tips
TIP. Bring no less than $25 dollars a day for tipping. Tip the valet, get a better room. Tip the houskeepers and get clean towels and sheets daily. Tip, the room bar stocker and get your in room bar stocked daily and not every other day as stated on the bar. Tip your servers and get better service. Tip the pool attendants and get service.
Bring a large travel cup for pool drinks. The cups are small and the ice melts too fast. If you simply hand them your travel cup they will fill it up and it will stay cool for hours.
Save a pool chair early. Yes there are plenty of chairs but not so many umbrellas. So if you want shade you should save.
Spa services, internet access, pool table games are extra.
No in room movies but if you enter in 01,02,03 or 04 into the remote you will get English. If you push the up and down arrows it will bypass they channels.
