Our visit was almost a year ago but my observations might still be relevant to some. I am early 30's and was travelling with 5 other singles 31 to 40. We're no spring-breakers but we were still out for a fun time.
Absolutely beautiful property. So grand. Our first room did smell a bit so they moved us. No problems there. If there is three people to a room, call for a fold-in-half bed - I found this cot to be just fine. Liquor supply in room (and bottles of water in fridge) is a nice touch but when we were there they only refilled every other day so if you see the re-stocker ask them for more and with a dollar or so tip they will gladly oblige.
Pools did close early – no swimming at night. I don't think there were any hottubs which would have been very enjoyable in the COOL evenings - mind you they probably would have closed them too. You also couldn't be on the beach at night - security guard gives you the boot.
Loved the food. There is so much all day and into the evening. Note that if you did stay up late, food was scarce - all that we found available was flimsy sandwiches in the lobby bar. Maybe we could have ordered room service but we never looked into it so perhaps take a few snacks back to your room after your evening meal if you think you'll want a late night snack.
Heed this piece of advice if you'd like to enjoy premium brand liquor ... it is readily available but you have to ask for it. For the first three days we couldn't figure out why our vodka sevens tasted so weird - it was because they use local liquor unless you specify otherwise!
Beach at the hotel was beautiful but very disappointing if swimming in the ocean is your thing. Some foolhardy folk did go in it and they did just fine but it is VERY wavy and possibly treacherous and I felt it was too dangerous to risk it – a definite NO for kids. You can walk down towards town and there is great calm swimming water or take a half day trip to nearby beaches for some decent snorkeling. We also took the glass bottom beach boat to the "Land's End" and saw the sea lions on the way - neat enough but don't spend too much $$ on it - lasted about 15 minutes. After the sea lions they drop you off at Land's End which I loved - swimmable water on one side (water maybe not for suitable for young kids) and walk a few feet to the other side to see fiercely massive waves pound the beach - nice half day excursion - bring water/snack if you feel you'll need because there was nothing out there. It’s less than a 10 minute boat ride from Riu if you skip the sea lions.
Oh – and beware the beach boats that pick you up at the hotel beach – verrrrry risky. I had heard about it from other reviews before I went and I witnessed it as I still spent my time sitting on the beach people-watching even though I didn’t swim. So these boats have to time it perfectly with the rolling waves to get close enough to the shore to let you get on/off the boat. They don’t beach the boat - they use a combination of forward prop and reverse prop to try to balance in the right place still floating in the water. If they don’t time it perfectly or if you try to jump on/off too soon, the waves/current will take your feet right out from under you and the boat might ram right into you. So in my people watching, I saw this happen many times and I thought I had analyzed it enough and that I’m young and nimble and that I had it cased. NOT SO! On our return from Land’s End, I jumped off too soon, a retreating wave knocked my legs out from under me and the boat would have run me over had my sister not booted me out of the way with her foot to my head! Yes – she kicked me to save me! You’ll understand what I mean when you see it these boats. Be very very very careful – it might look easy but it isn’t. Be really careful with kids, elderly, everyone! I don’t think I would have died or anything but I could see the possibility of pretty serious injury. Who knows – maybe this has changed since I was there.
For singles, nightlife with a discernable pulse was non-existent on the hotel grounds. It was VERY couply and while couples are nice people too ( ; they tend to turn in early and were not on the same page as us. Disco on site was cheezy (and empty) so we sought our party-fixes in town - Cabo Wabo once and Squid Row (which we preferred) twice. CRAZY WILD partying. FYI - one in our party found out that you cannot bring back an unregistered guest to the hotel after your downtown nightlife experiences. Another in our party found out that not all hotels in Cabo are like that.
So, there is our experience. Keep in mind it was in April 2005 when we were there and things may have changed. Or maybe not. The hotel was beautiful enough that I would consider going back – perhaps even as a single. If the crowd is similar to what we experienced, you'll just have to make your nightlife in town.
One more note - our only other Mexico experience was an earlier vacation at Club Med Cancun which we loved. There was a great beach with great swimming (at the time) and we loved the food. Also, as an adults-only somewhat singles oriented resort, everyone was on the same agenda … meet lots of new people and have a good ole time.
Safe travels wherever your decision may lead you!
